Malky Mackay yet to record league win as a manager after defeat at Barnsley

A suicidal three minutes saw Watford’s winless run in the league reach six games after Barnsley came from behind to win 2-1 at Oakwell.

Malky Mackay selected the same starting lineup which sent the Hornets into the Carling Cup quarter final on Tuesday at Swansea.

And the decision seemed to have paid off as the visitors were winning with just over 20 minutes to go thanks to a Tommy Smith goal.

But strikes from Miguel Mostto and Stephen Foster following defensive mix ups by Watford’s defence, gave Barnsley the win and Mackay his second league defeat as a manager.

The home side had picked up ten points from a possible 12 in the four games prior to last week’s defeat to Sheffield United.

That game was mainly remembered for the horrific injury striker Iain Hume suffered in a clash with Sheffield United’s Chris Morgan.

And it was Hume’s replacement Kayode Odejayi who set up the first chance of the game when he held the ball up in the Watford area and laid it off to Diego Leon but the midfielder’s shot was blocked for a corner.

Rob Kozluk then whipped in a teasing in-swinging cross which nobody got on the end of before Richard Lee made a tremendous save minutes later.

Jamal Campbell-Ryce sent in a good cross and Hugo Colace headed the ball at goal from six yards out and somehow a diving Lee saved it mid-air with his legs.

Odejayi was causing Watford problems and after he had out-muscled Leigh Bromby, he crossed for Jon Macken, who got a yard of space and thundered a shot against the Hornet’s bar.

As time went on Watford got into the game and after a neat inside pass by 17-year-old Ross Jenkins, Lee Williamson who scored his first goals of the season in the two games against Swansea, tried to curl a 20-yard shot into the top corner but it was well wide.

Mackay’s side started to really stroke the ball around and Tamas Priskin somehow found space and forced Heinz Muller into a save at his near post from a tight angle.

Jenkins then headed comfortably over after a good flick on by Jay DeMerit from a Williamson corner.

Lee then got lucky when the referee gave a free kick after Watford’s goalie fumbled the ball under minimal pressure from Odejayi.

Jenkins was looking comfortable in centre midfield and after skipping past Leon he played the ball to Mariappa who slipped Priskin in but the Hungarian’s cross was just headed away from the arriving Williamson.

Watford then had the best chance of the half when Williamson floated a lovely ball to Jobi McAnuff and the winger beat his man to the header before pulling the ball back to Priskin but the big striker fired over from eight yards.

Jon Harley then forced Muller into a good save when he struck a ferocious shot after McAnuff’s effort was blocked by the defender.

Campbell-Ryce was the South Yorkshire side’s most potent threat, with Odejayi, and after another mazy run he put Mounir El Haimour in but Lee just dived on the ball in time.

On Tuesday, Watford looked a lot stronger at the back and Mackay’s men were again looking good when in injury time of the first half, DeMerit slipped and Odejayi was one-on-one with Lee but the striker tried to be too clever and his little dink was saved by the on-coming goalkeeper.

The game was a lot more open at the beginning of the second half and Watford opened the scoring not long after the break.

McAnuff started the second period brightly and it was his low cross which Tommy Smith back-heeled in from inside the six-yard box.

The goal seemed to spur Barnsley into action and Colace had a long shot blocked and a header go wide before Campbell-Ryce’s shot was saved by Lee’s knees.

Harley also went close when Smith pulled the ball back to the edge of the box but the former Chelsea midfielder’s shot went just wide.

Smith then did well to find space to shoot but his effort was well over.

Watford looked comfortable at the back but as has been the case all season, out of nowhere, a defensive mix up allowed substitute Miguel Mostto in to fire past Lee from the edge of the area.

And if one defensive mistake wasn’t enough, Barnsley went ahead when Jon Macken kept the ball in from a corner and his cross was missed by a diving Lee at the front post, it bounced off a defender and Barnsley captain Stephen Foster knocked the ball past Mariappa on the line.

Watford seem to have fallen apart out of nowhere and Lee came and missed a long ball which was luckily hooked away.

Williamson had a long shot straight at Muller but Leon went straight down the other end and his deflected shot went just wide.

Watford then had two set pieces in quick succession but Bromby could only volley comfortably over.

With three minutes left, McAnuff ballooned a shot well wide as Watford chased an equaliser.

Smith went on a good run and crossed for Rasiak, who beat Muller to the ball, but it was scooped away by the defender.

Substitute Will Hoskins then found himself free from ten yards but his shot was straight at the ‘keeper.

I think my pre-season prediction of 19th was well wrong eh.

I've gone quiet coz I've got nothing more to say on the Watford matter.

Two years of dross and we're getting worse. League 1 beckons.

P.S: vOr, you still full of hope and optimism?

Joking aside, Watford are rubbish. Thanks Aidy, Malky and the Board, you've screwed us good and proper.

Couldn't go today......Had to wash my hair!
Sounds like we were jolly unlucky today and the report above is not that accurate, as I'm lead to believe.
Never mind, we'll be ok......Mid table come end of....

That'll be a yes then vOr.

And does anyone know anything about this Brendan Rogers character?

Hope he's got a sense of humour as he'll need one to manage anything at The Vic

Raisiak, Hoskins and JJ o'toole on the bench. Barnsley had 4 first team players out today and what do we do, gift them a opportunity to get a result. Hoskins does more in a warm up then Priskin. What does this lad have to do, to get a decent run in the team

I was beginning to think that Malky was "looking the part" as a manager, but I never expected him to pick the same side that beat Swansea, just because it was a winning side. Surely a manager puts out his best team available for a key league match, and at the preent time Rasiak and Hoskins must be in Watford's "best team" (and Priskin not) even if Jenkins for O'Toole is more debatable. Though it was defensive errors that cost us the match, we surely would have scored more goals against this weakened Barnsley side had Rasiak and Hoskins been on the pitch from the start. This team selection backfired badly, and Malky himself may be the main victim of the explosion. I suppose all managers are entitled to make mistakes while learning their trade, and maybe Malky will not make this mistake again--but will he be given the chance? Should he be?

According to Sky Sports, watford should have had a definate penalty just before their 1st goal. Why no mention of that in the report? Reports seems not the same as sky were saying!!

This is not Malky's fault he has been left with a failure's team "AIDY" and it is a blooming mess! Give Malky a chance especially with Burkinshaw back in the fold and we will climb to safety
What is the point of appointing a novice like Buck Rodgers from Chelsea if he was that good he would be in Scolari's position!

Homer and mr invisible i mean Ca$hton ,i hope you are sitting comfortably in this Recession?
YOU SHOULD BE..!!

Well I did go. It was an entertaining old game, shame about the result. Can't really comment on their goals (other end of the pitch and my eyes are too old), but TS's goal was sublime. Lee was on fire in the first half. He made so made fabulous saves that on another day we could have gone in three down. Then, rather unexpectadly, in the middle of the first half we got that round leather object and starting kicking it along that green stuff (rather than 30 feet aboce it) to other players also wearing gold. Never seen the like of it before. Looked really good, might even catch on. In the second half once we went behind went back to the tried and tested hoofing of the ball that never seems to work. And can somebody teach Lee to take a goal kick. He either hoofs it out of play or sends it high in the air to an opposition player. Short pass to our players and let us knock the ball around, Richard. They pressed us from the start and we never seemd to. Hope we play better against Spurs or we might look very silly. Not sure what is going wrong at the back. One minute Demerit is making great tackles the next the defence has gone walkabout and their players are through on goal. All in all it was nice to visit another grotty northern town, it just made me glad I didn't live there.

I was hoping we would get the win yesterday - but even if MM is kept on I wanted us to bring in a change.

If the board were sure Aidy moving on was right then there has to be a new style of manager or its Mclaren (errikson) all over.

Clearly leaving out Hoskins is just stupid! I assumed he was on the bench vs Swansea to rest him for this game. And when we went 1-0 up why didnt he swap Priskin for Hoskins - last week Rasiak showed he is not the man to close the defense down and we needed a workman up front.

O'Toole has not quite been with it lately but again this was the game to remotivate him.

Unfortunately MM you have the same view of the players as AB and we need a fresh view.

But everyone ... dont dispair - we have good players but not a solid team. We can score. We will be alright!!

Fans thinking Malky Mackay Wont get the job are either deaf or stupid.

IF your employer appoints you to the job and then says if he wants it permenant all he has to do is say.

You will get the job.

And the reason......

is it his vast experience?
Is it that he is completely different?
Is it becasue of his wealth of Knowledge and football contacts?

or is it because.............
. he is cheap.

Text ABC or D you wont win a prize becasue the asnwer is so simple
