Scott Loach concedes four as Germany triumph in Sweden

Scott Loach suffered a torrid European Championship Under-21 final tonight as England were thumped 4-0 by old rivals Germany in Sweden to ensure their 25-year wait to lift the trophy continues.

The Watford keeper, given the chance to impress on the biggest stage of his life by Stuart Pearce after suspension ruled Joe Hart out of the showdown in Malmo, was beaten for the first time after 23 minutes when Gonzalo Castro nicked the ball past him after good work by play-maker Mesut Ozil.

But within three minutes of the restart, the 21-year-old suffered a moment all stoppers dread. Ozil hit a speculative 35-yard free-kick that swerved in the air and deceived Loach, who stuck out his left hand but was unable to prevent the ball bobbling over the line.

To add insult to injury, Loach was between twice more in the final 15 minutes - and on both occasions it was Sandro Wagner who scored.

The manner of this defeat was in marked contrast to the manner in which Jay DeMerit was denied Confederations Cup glory 24 hours earlier - seeing his American side let a two-goal slip as Brazil ran out 3-2 victors in South Africa - but both players have still ensured another chapter is written in Vicarage Road history.

Ah...not the best game but really England have been very average throughout.

No doubt Loach will get the blame but the rest of the England team didn't do that much better. As per usual, the lack of skill and invention underscores just why we have failed to win anything in 43 long painful years.

We just don't get it.

Scott is still learning and didnt have his best game but how many of his team mates played well?none if anyone is to blame it is Stuart Pearce!

I just hope the team at Watoford can boost Scott's confidence again. This will have been a real blow to him and we cannot afford to suffer the backlash from it. He had a bad game tonight, it will happen again. He needs to take heart from David James, who is still going strong (although still gaffe prone too!!) but at his age, he needs the faith of his team and fans, to get him off to a good start for the Golden boys, - come on Scotty!!

Bad luck Scott. These things happen, especially to young goalies. Better (for WFC) that it happens on England duty than on Watford duty.

Let's hope he gets support in pre-season and suffers no serious blow to the confidence.

He should be a very key player for us next season and a valuable player to sell in due course.

Sorry but I don't buy the club before country ethos. That's for scum like Carragher. Do you support England?

Watford first
England Second.
And proud of it!

Whilst we will all be sympathetic to Scott he simply was out of his depth. Yes he is young but then this is an U21 comp, they are all young! – The second and third goals were both his fault and they changed the game 4-0 in a final not sure when the last time that happened.

The real issue he is, if this really is one of the best young GK’s in the country we will have real problems in a few years!

I hope your keeper is not made a scapegoat.
I cannot see any of that team breaking in to the full team.
Even though most of them are premier players, their technical ability is poor and all they seem to possess is the ability to run up and down the pitch.
Where are there any decent English coaches, who are willing to nurture the skills they require?
At present England won't win anything for years and years.

He seemed very slow at coming off his line for the first and third goals

I agree its a problem and maybe showed up more by the performance of Loach (who has had good and bad games for us like any youngsters does..)

If our goalie (only started playing when Poom got injured in September) and a guy from Peterborough who trheir fans say is iffy at times are the 2nd and 3rd best at Under 21s level whilst the 1st choice hardly got a game for Man City once Given signed what does it say?

I am sure Loach will bounce back and be egar to impress/prove a point.

Now you know why WFC have invested in the Harefield project.

Never has such a turgid England performance justified the vision that is unique to our club.

I see The Sun Says he may be off to Spurs for £6m.

£6m could aid the coffers and maybe all the good outfield players needn't be sold.

Richard Lee, anyone?

Although Scott Loach made the mistake that ultimately cost us the game, it wasn't his fault that we lost. I am a goalkeeper and I can tell you that how the team in front of you are playing affects your confidence, and we were awful which didn't help Loachy. He will get nothing other then a hero's welcome against Doncaster and we will get right behind him and watch him become a quality player for the horns!

well well well

good morning flock

so england u21 get beaten in the final

i consider that to be a remarkabke feat and stuart p should be lauded

what amazed me was that england actually had enough class players with international / euro competition experience to actually fill 11 places after all where exactly do most of our youger players learn their trade ??

with some high profile exceptions( well done mr wenger ) they are probably playing 2nd or 3rd string at premier level or regular championship standard

afterall what does the premier leagure do best...??? yes you have guessed it train the worlds younger players and blood them for their own countries full squads

it makes me cringe when certain premier league supporters pop up at england matches of whatever level and say they are the fans.

complete and utter rubbish true fans could not possibly both support the typical prem league side stutted full of opportunist journeymen ...we all know which clubs they are...and also support england..or wales or scotland for that matter

football is sick in our country ..england will never repeatNEVER win an international tournament until the number and age of oversees players is capped ...another regulation that shud be brought in at once is a maximum debt that any club can get themselves sucked into stand up homer mark a and betty !!!

ring any bells...strange isnt it betty hasnot got another job yet ??

where is homer ??

we know mark a has been rumbled

i want to know when not if the rozzers are brought in to investigate shall we put it kindly certain irregularities at wfc

well that is quite enough bile spent before matins any more and t will be th archbishops bad books

still the lady deaconness and i are of on a sabatical ....and will be back in time for the reopening for the new calendar of watfords own cathedral ( the vic)

keep the faith
