Watford do not expect to bring anyone else in when emergency loan window opens

Malky Mackay does not expect any new arrivals at Watford when the emergency loan window reopens on Monday.

The final few days of the January transfer window saw a fair amount of movement, with a number of players leaving on loan and the arrival of the dominant centre half fans have been waiting for.

Only last week Mackay said he might have to wait until the emergency loan window reopens to sign the defender he desperately wanted, but the surprise capture of Martin Taylor on a free transfer means the Watford manager does not now expect any new signings in the coming weeks.

The Watford boss said: “I would probably say that will be it. But I am not going to commit to saying no. Unless something comes up and I think we can do something that doesn’t cost too much, then you never know.

“But my immediate thoughts are we did great business in this transfer window in terms of the players we got and the balance of the squad.

“You are always on the look out for good players and if you can get them then you get them but the team spirit in the group here is second to none at the moment.”

Heidar Helguson, Henri Lansbury and Tom Cleverley’s loan spells were all extended by early last month and Watford made three permanent signings in the January window.

Along with Taylor’s arrival from Birmingham City, youngsters Will Buckley and Stephen McGinn have both joined from Rochdale and St Mirren respectively and are two players yet to come into the side.

It was also a positive window for reducing the squad size and wage bill.

The departure of high earners Nathan Ellington and Mat Sadler will help save the club money and Scott Severin and Rob Kiernan have joined Kilmarnock until the end of the season, with Marvin Sordell going to Tranmere Rovers on a month’s loan.

Jure Travner, Jordan Parkes, Billy Gibson and Lewis Young are four other players who Mackay is keen to see loaned out to gain first-team football.

But, as for arrivals, it seems unlikely anyone else will move to Vicarage Road, despite Mackay’s desire to add more experience to his squad.

He said: “We still have a young and inexperienced squad but there is a limit to the finances we have and credit to the people who have allowed us to be able to do these pieces of business.

“We have got youngsters in here who are here for the future so there is no expectation for immediate impacts from certain people. They have to get into the way we work at the club.

“They are a great group and the spirit is fantastic.”

Watford were on the brink of administration in December but the pending £7.5m rights issue seems to have helped ease the pressure on the Hornets’ board.

The club still need to reduce its wage bill and raise working capital before June but Mackay believes the club is making progress.

He said: “The fact we are part of a Plc means our business is public and it goes out to the stock exchange. A lot of clubs aren’t and are privately owned and people don’t realise the ten, 15 and 20 millions of pounds of debt these clubs have. We don’t have that and are nowhere near that now.

“I think a recent stats table put us in the top six or seven clubs in health in the division right now.

“I think the calmness that is in the club recently, in terms of the people running it and the way the club is in transition, it is credit to them.

“We need the club to survive. There are a lot of clubs teetering on the brink and we need to survive and go forward.

“It may go forward a little bit at a time, in baby steps, but we hope to do the best we can with the resources we have and this group is giving me everything they have got.”

Would like to see Hoskins moved on with a young striker come in either with a view to buy in the summer or the option for a years long loan next season.

Otherwise I agree on paper a good window but we play on grass and these promising signing need to perform before I judge good or bad.

"In Malky We Trust!"
You've done a great job in adverse circumstances, Malky - an excellent window for The 'Orns. Surely this team can't go down... and I would have taken that at the start of the season. All we need now is a Stadium fit for our return to The Premiership in the next few seasons!!! Dark Days are not yet behind us, but I can see the lights in the distance! COYH!!

He speaks so much sense. Delighted to have a man like Malk in charge of our football club.

If we stick with Malky (as long as we stay up of course), we will be alright.

I agree with unloading Hoskins as his face obviously doesn't fit. I would rather we give Sordel or Henderson a run in the team rather than bring in another prospect. We will never know if they are good enough unless we give them a chance.

Personally I disagree with all the talk around Hoskins needing to move on. I'm not sure what's going on with him, but he's never been given a chance here (games) although something must be off in training for that extended chance to come through. Whenever I've seen him play (start) he's been very good - on one occasion the best on the park. The boy's one of the most skilled players we have and obviously got talent. I say give him a chance with Graham out of form. He's a similar type of player and would benefit from a partnership with Helguson.

Another forward to go with Helguson is definately required (although probably not affordable).
With Graham (misfiring), Hoskins (not fancied), & Henderson (just rubbish!) more attacking options are a must.
Maybe Bucko has been acquired with this in mind!

I have to disagree on Hoskins being an uncut diamond who hasn't had a chance, he needs shipping out as he never made the step up that Boothroyd gambled on. As one poster has said maybe best on the park on one occaision. That's all (and i can't even remember when that was). Graham will hit his straps again as he definitely does have something to work on.

I've changed my mind about Hoskins. I thought he looked determined on Tuesday. I say start him with Helguson next time we go 2 up front. Then if all is not well, we can always bring on Graham. In any case Danny needs to know his place is not automatic.

How can anyone say that Hoskins has not been given a chance, he is given a chance everyday in training to show that he has the ability to be an asset to the team and has the right attitude, what more of a chance should he be given. If he is unable to show 3 different managers (ok 2 managers and a tw@t) that he is either not good enough to command a starting place or secondly has a bad attitude full stop, on a footballers wages he should be moved on. I am sure that many of the guys reading this would give there right arm to pull on a Watford shirt, so sorry dont't feel sorry for him, he either needs to make it happen by ensuring that we cannot afford to be without him in the team or find a level that he can.

Finally Malky is doing a great job on limited resources, no chance of relegation and hope the finances at the club can be sorted for further investment in the summer.
