SCOTT FITZGERALD has come to the attention of Ireland scouts and a story has been floated in the Republic, linking the Watford striker with the possibility of selection to the Ireland B squad.
Sources in Ireland point out that Irish strikers are short on the ground and with Fitzgerald's mother having been born just outside Galway, he qualifies for consideration.
When his name was mentioned to Ireland's international manager Brian Kerr, he said: "There is a B international in the New Year and there will be a number of players under consideration."
Irish sources are also aware that Gavin Mahon would also qualify, claiming his mother is Irish, although born in Germany.
Interest in Watford's Irish connections has accelerated following the recruitment of Stephen Kelly, who is already an Irish Under-21 international. Kerr or his staff are likely to be watching Kelly and will also track Fitzgerald.
