Saracens' bid to move to Copthall has moved a step closer after London Borough of Barnet council officers recommended the plans for approval.

The Premiership champions want to revive the Mill Hill venue into a 10,000-seat stadium which will be used by the community outside of match days.

Saracens chairman Nigel Wray said: "The recommendation to approve our planning application by council officers is a very positive step forward and we sincerely hope that councillors at Barnet will also be able to support the plans.

“The recommendation is the result of a thorough analysis of all aspects of the plans and a lot of hard work to develop the best possible scheme. Issues have been raised throughout the process, such as Green Belt policy and transportation.

"We have responded positively by amending our plans, providing further information and introducing robust safeguards.

“We are not a normal developer. We plan to make Copthall our home. We are therefore committed to working closely with the local community and becoming a part of it.

"We want and need local support and we will work hard for it. We absolutely promise that. We will treat local residents with respect and make a positive difference in the area."

Sarries are currently playing at Vicarage Road but have struggled to attract decent crowds to Watford.

The club's plans for Copthall will be heard at a planning and environment committee meeting on Thursday, February 2.

So now Red & Mr Growser now think that:

- Barnet's amateur sports and athletics clubs
- Barnet's schools
- Barnet's youth
- Boris Johnson
- Most normal people in Barnet who think that greenbelt land should be green and beautiful...
- ..and now Barnet's own planning officer.

Are completely wrong and are only a vile smokescreen for those evil Sarries to take over Copthall and cause mayhem despite being explicitly prevented from doing so by the fine print of what Saracens have agreed to do. But then who bothers looking at the details when you've got a brilliant deal for the people of Barnet to scupper!

Oh it most definitely SHOULD be allowed ;)

Good luck to Saracens at Mill Hill. Not sure if Sarries have tried very hard to build a support in SW Herts over the last few years. Once they get a base I am sure they will build a solid 6,000 - 8,000 attendance. Their prices certainly make Championship soccer look good value.

Andrew, when was last time you last went to watch?? unless you are a season ticket holder,or get your tickets through a local rugby club,it can be £30 a ticket for south stand!! Very bad move for sarries I will still go,but cant help feeling all the uncertainty over ground has contributed to poor attendances, the sarries fans in Watford have been forgotten about!! I think it will take a long time to build up to 8,000 crowds at Copthall!! How can movng to this stadium be progress??
