Watford striker Bernard Mensah scored his first goal for loan club Barnet on Tuesday and Bees manager Martin Allen believes he will be an important addition to his squad.

The 19-year-old joined the Conference table-toppers at the start of November and scored his first goal for the club in Tuesday's 3-2 defeat against Torquay United after coming off the bench.

Mensah was denied a second when his audacious scissor-kick was inadvertently blocked by team-mate Charlie MacDonald.

The young front-man was also introduced from the bench for the Bees' 3-1 FA Cup defeat against League Two side Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.

Speaking on Tuesday night, Bees head coach Allen said: "Bernard, perhaps he was unlucky not to start tonight, but he is going to be a good player for this club.

"I have got fantastic reports from Alan Devonshire (Braintree Town manager) about Bernard."

The Hounslow-born hitman scored twice in nine appearances for Braintree last season, before seeing his loan stay cut short after suffering knee ligament damage.

He had previously had surgery on the same knee two years earlier and made his return to action for Watford's Under-21s against Peterborough United in the Under-21 Premier League Cup in September.

Mensah has been on the bench for the Hornets on a handful of occasions this season, but has been restricted to Under-21s football as he seeks to re-build his fitness following injury.
