Luke O’Nien’s versatility may hinder his development according to Gordon Bartlett but the midfielder’s attitude and determination has hugely impressed the Wealdstone boss.

The 19-year-old joined the Conference South side in August on a season-long loan and has quickly established himself as a regular starter in Bartlett’s side.

O'Nien has played in several positions for Watford's youth teams, including in defence and in midfield.

He has made 11 league appearances at Grosvenor Vale, the majority of which have come at left midfield, and O’Nien has made an impression both on and off the pitch.

Bartlett said: “You can’t fault Luke’s enthusiasm, he lives and breathes football. He works so hard and has to be dragged off the training pitch.

“What is difficult for Luke is that he is so versatile he isn’t regularly playing in one position.

“I think he needs to find his best position and that needs to happen for him to continue his development as a professional because there is no faulting his determination and attitude.”

He added: “Coming to the Conference South has been good for Luke and it is very different to playing Under-21 football at Watford.

“We have not been having the best season but that will be a good experience for Luke, it will toughen him up.”
