Christmas criminals alert
6:30am Friday 21st December 2012 in npower Championship Table & Results
POLICE are urging the public to be on their guard as Christmas criminals look for easy targets.
Opportunistic thieves are on the lookout for insecure vehicles and properties which are filled with expensive presents and officers are keen to warn shoppers that leaving cars unlocked or items on view is an open invitation to thieves.
Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Andrea Kell, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “Being a victim of crime at this time of year can really ruin your Christmas, especially if presents you have bought for your family and friends are stolen.
“Many thefts are avoidable and occur because cars or homes have been left insecure. This is a dream come true for thieves who relish a gift like an open window or an unlocked door.”
She urges shopper to park in well-lit areas, lock car doors, close the windows and sunroof and activate the alarm if you have one.
It is also important for trades people to be security conscious, and not to leave tools in their van overnight or on display while the vehicle is unattended.
