Watford’s Under-18s were dumped out of the FA Youth Cup this evening after losing 4-0 to Chelsea at Vicarage Road.
The Blues were simply too strong for Watford as goals by Aliu Djalo, Marko Mitrovic, Jeffrey Bruma and Joshua McEachran sent the West-Londoners through to the semi-finals.
The Hornets had the first real chance of the game on 12 minutes, but Piero Mingoia’s dangerous free kick was headed just wide by Gavin Massey.
Chelsea front-man Mitrovic was then presented with a golden opportunity at the other end, as wide-man Milan Lalkovic lofted the ball over the onrushing Jonathan Bond. With the goal at his mercy, Mitrovic bundled the ball home but the referee adjudged that he had used his arm in the process.
It wasn’t long, however, before the deadlock was broken as Djalo was sent through one-on-one with Bond and finished emphatically to put the Blues 1-0 up.
Watford were clearly shaken by the goal and nearly fell further behind just moments later, as McEachran floated his effort just over the bar.
Chelsea settled as the half wore on and Hornets’ captain Eddie Oshodi almost put through his own net on the half-hour mark, with some smart reactions from Bond coming to his rescue.
Oshodi’s luck didn’t last long though and as the half-time whistle approached, the Hornets’ skipper pushed the lively Mitrovic to the ground in the area, resulting in a penalty for the visitors. Mitrovic picked himself up and sent Bond the wrong way to send the hosts in at the break 2-0 down.
Set-piece specialist Mingoia came close for Watford shortly after the restart but his well struck free kick sailed over the bar.
The visitors soon added a third as Bruma was allowed far too much space in the penalty area. The centre-half had time to control the ball, before picking his spot and ended any ideas the Hornets had of a comeback.
Watford battled on in an attempt to salvage some pride, but the impressive McEachran rubbed salt in to the wound late on, thumping home a volley at the back post, after some good work down the right hand side by Gokhan Tore.
Chelsea will face either Blackburn or Everton in the semi-final and will be confident of going all the way in the competition after this evening’s truly dominant display.

I agree completely with Rick, I dont think he goes far enough. After watching the first team lose 5-0 to Chelsea earlier the first team is a luxury we cant afford. Lets not have any players at all!!!

Ok i agree Rick's comments are over the top, but i went to the game last night and it wasn't far short of a mis match. I don't think Watford had a shot on target! However, we have to stick with the academy. There were a couple of players who looked good on the Watford side but not sure there were many who will end up as first team stars.

As for experience well MW worked in the city and has no long term experience. If he was so great, then why did a good crop of boys that were at the club before he came, fall short last night? He is responsible for it with the coaching over the last 2 years, even given the budget Chelsea have had to get the best boys from Europe in. With the two leaving the club, I think you better hold the conversation now and find out as you put it.. why why why?
Too many negatives from some within WFC against the academy. Why? coz they couldn't afford it! or they can now but have little vision. Where are the scouts? There is so much talent out there. Lets not allow the other clubs to clean up. Top quality coaches have gone: OA and now MW, why why why?. Its about time the club started to believe and invest in the academy(properly). What ever they put in they will get out 10 fold!!

This result only adds credence to my comments a few days ago. The academy is a luxury we can't afford - and its simply not producing! How many of these Chelsea players will ever make it into the reserves, let alone the first team???? I bet GT feels a right pillock now, and rightly so. I feel sorry for anyone who wasted their time and money watching this mismatch tonight. There is nothing coming out of our youth system that would suggest the expenditure on it is in any way justified. Scrap the academy, revert back to a traditional youth system, and the money saved can be spent on the experienced players the club so desperately needs.

Interested by Goldenboy's comments regarding the quality of coaches having left the club ie OA and MW. You clearly know both of these individuals well and therefore have witnessed many of the developments over the last 3 years. I believe OA has brought many younger players to the club and MW has been responsible for many of the youth team ie Isaac, Brooks, Yiadom, Fenwick, Penny etc, It seems such a shame that someone like you who clearly loves the game can be so severe in yr comments? I can only presume OA or MW has done you a mis-service and therefore comments fuelled by bitterness?
