Watford hold on for a point against Blackpool

Watford survived a number of nail-biting moments to secure a battling away point at Blackpool.

Pool’s Matt Phillips and Lomana LuaLua both hit the same post in the first half and Scott Loach needed to make several saves in the second period.

Former Watford striker Kevin Phillips missed a sitter after coming off the bench but the Hornets battled well and Prince Buaben should have scored himself when he fired over from inside the six-yard box.

Watford made one change to their starting XI as Lloyd Doyley came in for Carl Dickinson, who was ill. Joe Garner was on the bench because Chris Iwelumo was also suffering with sickness. Former Newcastle United forward LuaLua, replacing Chris Basham, was the only alteration for Blackpool.

The game started at a frantic pace and Blackpool were looking extremely dangerous through their pacey front three of Callum McManaman, Matt Phillips and LuaLua.

Watford had a dangerous attack break down early on but Blackpool countered quickly and Phillips, who scored six goals in seven games on loan at Sheffield United recently, smashed a 20-yard strike against the post.

There was then a spell of real pressure from the home side and the Hornets’ full backs endured a torrid spell as they were beaten on several occasions.

LuaLua had a goal-bound effort deflected over by a team-mate and some excellent wing play from McManaman almost resulted in his low cross picking out LuaLua sliding in at the far post.

Watford responded with a mini flurry of their own and had a couple of ‘nearly’ moments.

Nyron Nosworthy picked out the run of the lively Troy Deeney and the striker’s touch was impressive, but his shot was blocked by the recovery tackle from former Hornets loanee Craig Cathcart.

His strike partner Marvin Sordell was then slipped down the left channel by Michael Kightly, he ignored Deeney to go it alone and his effort was blocked.

Blackpool went agonisingly close to opening the scoring once more when LuaLua picked up the ball 25 yards out and struck a low drive which also rebounded off the post.

Watford had to endure some very worrying moments but they finished the half well and were looking lively. The front two linked up well and almost put Deeney in. But the visitors also wasted a couple of decent opportunities to cross.

The second 45 minutes began with Mariappa heading Mark Yeates’ corner a few yards wide.

But then Loach had a moment to forget as he palmed a Blackpool cross straight to Matt Phillips but the goalkeeper recovered well to save his shot.

Loach then needed to save again moments later when Gary Taylor-Fletcher got the wrong side of Nosworthy and the Hornets’ goalkeeper rushed out to save. The ball was gathered by McManaman though and his low cross should have resulted in a simple finish for Taylor-Fletcher, only for the midfielder to flick wide from close range.

Watford were more than a match for the recently-relegated side in terms of work rate and endeavour and also played some nice football at times. Yeates sent a low shot wide and Matt Gilks held on to Sordell’s effort, which was heading for the far corner.

The Hornets then had a glorious opportunity to score when Kightly picked out the run of Buaben and he side-footed over from inside the six-yard box.

But the visitors rode their luck on several occasions during the afternoon and with just over 20 minutes remaining, Adrian Mariappa uncharacteristically gave the ball away in his own box and Nosworthy needed to leap through the air to make a crucial block as Taylor-Fletcher struck.

Blackpool had another spell of real pressure, as Deeney made a good defensive header from a dangerous cross, but once again, Watford went on the attack.

Substitute John Eustace had a shot blocked and then the captain was picked out at a corner but he was unable to get his shot away.

Kevin Phillips was sent on in search of the winner and he should have grabbed the deciding goal when he headed over from inside the six-yard box with the goal gaping.

Billy Clarke had a shot saved and Loach made a decent stop from Ian Evatt - parrying his header in the air the defender's follow up.

Watford finished the game strongly though and Kightly thought he was set to score when Gilks jumped over the midfielder and dropped a through ball, only for the referee to blow for a foul.

The Hornets had a chance to send in a corner with the four minutes of injury time up but they took it short and the final whistle blew.

Very happy with a point away to Blackpool any time of year, even better we managed it on a cold winters day.

Roll on Boxing Day. Going into the cardiff game on the back of a 1 loss in 9 run is no bad thing.

a point at Blackpool is always a good one and reading the above it may well have been a lucky one.
well done lads anyway and lets make it a win against Cardiff, that would be great to savour.

Have no idea if Nosworthy would be affordable but what a difference there has been to our defensive record since his arrival. A.M has been twice the player he was last year. Loach continues to be a worry !!
Great result

Yes and Cardiff having lost today might not be bad for us also. Sounds like we were under lots of pressure today and equipped ourselves well against a very dangerous team. Well done to the team and to Mr Dyche who is proving to be more than what I had expected. Lot's more to come though and every game will be very tough for us. At some stage we need to start taking multiple points from some games. Is 52 pts still the target in the Championship? Well done you Golden Boys!

Listening to the match sounded like we were very lucky not to loose & also unlucky not to win. Apart from those two points we sounded good. In the first half the commentator was making some technical point about how we should fill a gap and put their players under more pressure. Sorry I did not understand his point to explain fully. It took 40 minutes for our players to work it out but they did so good on them.

Not quite what it said on the Blackpool website where they say he was impressive. Clean sheet, 1 defeat in 9, should have won against Leeds but suppose that was loach's fault. Give the guy a break.

We should have won against Bristol city ! That was his fault.

Just because mistakes or basic errors don't always lead to goals does not mean that loach's handling or positioning skills shouldn't be addressed.

I have no confidence in him and from what ive heard nor does our defense.

According to the guy reporting on Sky Sports who was at the game if it was'nt for Loach we would have lost by a lot, he even said that Loach was having a good game. Perhaps he needs us supporters to get behind him and stop giving negative remarks about him and other players. I use to play in goal and of course goalkeepers mistakes are always are highlighted, the nature of the position I suppose. Sordell recently has missed a few sitters and a penalty why haven't you got on his back. I arrest my case.

Good battling performance.Thought the centre halts on the whole were superb, the full backs however were a bit exposed I suppose it's was Doyleys first game for a while but he looked slow which is a worry cos pace is is main asset.Loach made some decent saves but still is of great concern. However we also caused them problems with some decent play ourselves.Hogg and Deeney worked tirelessly a great point for the horns.Couldn't believe it when Phillips missed the header!

What a great result both teams on good runs and Blackpool in the dominant position, I was unsure how this one would go albeit we have only lost 2 of the previous 9 against them and they have a better team now, well done to the boy's! How anyone can have a go at Loach is beyond me not only did he keep a clean sheet he also stopped some fine shot's, yet some muppets on here pick up on a mistake he made, what about Mariappa's mistake or Sordells mistake or Princes mistake in the game or the last corner and kick of the game being short instead of into the box for examples of mistakes! For god sake what is there to replace Loach on our team? Nothing!! Loach did well and should be congratulated for that fact not chastised by clueless muppets, he kept a clean sheet idiots!!

Dyche continues to prove me wrong and I along with Lutondown and buckler are, it would seem, mature enough to admit that. A good point at a tough place to go. I just hope we haven't used up all our luck! We will go on a bad run, it's the nature of this league but thankfully it would appear that there are 3 teams worse than us so we should survive. Lay off loach he's a good enough keeper at this level, they all make mistakes.

I was one of the few hardy souls at the game and it was a good point; the comments about Loach are valid he was both shaky with several errors and then also made a couple of excellent saves.

Deeney was excellent throughout although Sordell was lazy and a complete waste of space - do not understand why he wasn't subbed.

Bauben continues to flatter to deceive and whilst he may sometimes look good he gives the ball away far too often, doesn't put in enough work or tackles for my liking and missed our best chance through being too casual.

Eustace helped shore things up late on in midfield and I'd really like to see him and the excellent Hogg given another chance to play together.

After the first 20 mins when we were run ragged we more than held our own and could've won the game although all in all a good away point.

Expect a very tough game against Malky's men on Boxing Day after their defeat yesterday.

Come on you Golden Boys, Clap, Clap, Clap!

What does Loach have to do to get dropped ?

Well first of all we need a keeper to replace him. Was Gilmartin any better when he had a couple of games ? No.

Just because the name is different, doesnt mean they are any good.

Loachies problems with high balls are well documented & he is not getting any better, but he does well in other situations & overall is the best we have.

Too many people are used to playing Championship manager where they can magic a new keeper anytime they like. This is reality.

My comments about loach being shakey were based upon the commentary on 3CR.

And most of the games I have seen him play this season. Yes he can make great saves as a shotstopper , but I would like a keeper who can handle the basics such as catching and taking crosses rather than one who makes the ball look like a bar of soap.

I just watched the highlights on Watford Player and have to say that he looked awful. Even shots from a long way out were beating him and hitting the posts. They were certainly all over us like a rash. Still, a point there is more than acceptable however it was obtained but the manager must surely be looking for a keeper in January....surely!

The thing is SAH you must only enter this site wearing rose tinted glasses, saying things that the happy chappies want to hear and speak no evil.
Now at the risk of speaking the unspeakable, loach is under par, he is and has been for two seasons. I think if a decent offer comes in we should bite.
This statement is in no way a detractment from recent results, of which I am still happily clapping.
So on that positive note I have one thing to say to Sean, go get Nosworthy full time if you can.

Christmas wishes regarding WFC.

We beat Malky's men and the Rookery doesn't hail MM's return.

I didn't mind him leaving but he grabbed Andrew Taylor, Conway and Cowie plus a lot of backroom and office staff. Shame we do not use confidentiality agreements and three months gardening leave. How we expect players to honour contract agreements when our last two managers have ignored their contracts I dont know but then we did get compensation.

Secondly Sean and Laurence to hold onto Nyron and find a good replacement for Kightly if we cannot keep him. Then the results will continue even with the most frustrating goalie in the division. He can stop shots brilliantly but positioning and the catching of crosses seems at time to be beyond him despite his size.

Looks like we got away with this one but how many points have we dropped this season from good positions. I make it probably 7 - how will it cost us at the end of the season? The drop zone is hotting up with Donny winning and I can see it going to the last game. January is crucial for us. Kightly will be a big miss and needs replacing.

As for Boxing day lets make sure we make our feelings known loud and clear to Mactaff. We gave the guy is big break in football management and left the club without a formal word of thanks or gratitude as well as taking key players and personnel. The only comment that he made (which was made via a third party) was that he 'was proud of HIS achievements at watford under tough financial contraints') - wow what gratitude Malky.....

How quickly you all forget. MM was snubbed by the club when they went for Brendan Rodgers after Boothroyd got the bullet. He stayed on and did an excellent job when Rodgers had cleared off to Reading. The football under Mackay was some of the best seen at Vicarage Road in years. Can anyone really blame him for taking one look at the new owner and deciding that his future lay elsewhere? Interesting that the same people castigating Mackay for his lack of 'loyalty' where calling for Dyche's head a few weeks ago (and will probably do so again once results take a turn for the worse)

Ok let's remind you, Steve shrewiod made himself available to play, a half fit Sherwood would have been better than Plumley. This ranks along Taylor's greatest gaffes the others being Not playing Pat Rice in the 84 cup final and playing the novice Neil Price instead (madness) Turning our club into a proto type passionless family club that nobody else followed, yet also managed to get rid of most of the aggro. I am one of GTs biggest fans and he's given us days we'll never see again but he did make some crucial errors!
Didn't Shirley have a broken finger and did it too close to the final to be fit?
I meant too clsoe to the semi final (whoops).

How quickly you all forget. MM was snubbed by the club when they went for Brendan Rodgers after Boothroyd got the bullet. Can anyone really blame him for taking one look at the new owner and deciding that his future lay elsewhere? Interesting that the same people castigating Mackay for his lack of 'loyalty' where calling for Dyche's head a few weeks ago (and will probably do so again once results take a turn for the worse)
Yep count me in if results take a turn for the worse ( banner is ready) and by your comments sounds like you will be the one starting the awful chant about having a haggis pie and beer? Make yourself known at the game please!

Yes mate he had one broken digit whereas Plumley had ten fumbley fingers!
Like said Sherwood said he was ok to play, Taylor in his Wisdom put in Eddie Plumleys Sunday league goalkeeping son in.
Bad decision, that may have been political!

I think he started to slide when we got whacked for five at Chelsea in the cup, he really had a shocker that day, and I think he started to wobble after that.
You do have to question the coaching though as it appears that he improves on certain aspects but no progress on his weaknesses,
Coaches out!! Lol

The only reason he stayed on after Rodgers was to gain further experience. Who else at the time came in and offered him a Managers role?

I agree we played some fantastic football under MM but its his apparent lack of gratitude towards the club and fans that irritates.

I had no problem with Malky accepting a better job because he did well for us during his period as manager. I also agree with you that his side played the best football we have seen at the Vic for many years ( even if much of the credit should go to Kerslake for that).

I was however unhappy that he returned to take so many of our people plus Taylor who he would have previously courted at Watford's expense.
In addition I never read any article where he acknowledged the decent support he was given by most Watford supporters during the years he spent here.
Now that wouldn't have taken much of
his time or required much effort.
So I fully support Lutondown's excellent new Malky song and hope that the Rookery can show some decent support for Sean Dyche who stayed with us when he could have gone with all the others to Cardiff.

and I also agree with roaring Dyches name, sort of penance for me and my impetuos impatience with him!
So there you have it

Humble pie
An apology
Being nice to clappers
And a superior kind of humility

Think it's time we moved on and got over our ex-Manager. Personally, I thought Malky did a great job for us under extremely difficult crcumstances and will thank him for that.

However that's now history and we should focus all our support on our current team. The King is dead, love live the King!

Thank you SAH! A merry Xmas to you and yours, friend.
Mary is getting the stable ready, just seen her after she was turned out of an Inn for wearing soiled Pantyhose. She was with this chap called Joe and In pursuit were these three chaps who went by the name of Buckler, Hornet Cornet and EDL.
Funny but she looked a little preggers to me.
Outside was this Donkey ( or an ****, couldn't tell) they named Corbymalice.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, they all went mad and starting to frequent that bad King Fifteen miles north of that Great golden star, and they were last seen at the remains of Solomons temple better known as the wailing wall, all chanting Luton Luton!
Those three wise men took pity on these Blue square wannabes and shot them out of decent humanity.

And we will sing forevermore because of boxing day!

Gushing praise indeed Cleef!
Now I'm being seen in my true colours as a real man do you think Sean might give me a run out?
I see myself as a dynamic if a little static (I am getting on you know) midfielder, and with my Rugby background I could introduce the art of rucking and mauling to our team plan, and maybe induce the odd scrum ( or violent affray!)
Anyway I obviously have too much time on my hands, now I'm on Xmas leave!
