Watford draw for fifth Championship game in six after Cardiff City point

A mistake from Scott Loach cost Watford a battling Boxing Day win over Cardiff City and former manager Malky Mackay as a pulsating clash at Vicarage Road ended 1-1.

The Hornets were on course for the three points after superb work from Marvin Sordell set up Prince Buaben for his first goal for the Hornets but with ten minutes remaining the Watford keeper belatedly came for a long Aron Gunnarsson throw but finished up stranded as Adrian Mariappa’s flicked header sailed over him, although the goal was credited to Ben Turner.

The captain's second own goal in the three home game - neither of which was really his fault - was harsh on the hosts but a point against one of the Championship’s leading sides extended Watford's unbeaten run to seven after a fifth draw in six outings.

Sean Dyche made just the one change from the side that held Blackpool to a goalless draw last time out, with Carl Dickinson returning from illness to replace Lloyd Doyley. That meant Doyley would have to wait for his opportunity to become only the 12th player in Hornets’ history to make 350 senior appearances for the club. Chris Iwelumo was also back on the bench, having also missed the trip to Bloomfield Road through sickness.

Former Watford boss Mackay included two other familiar faces in his starting line-up – ex-Vicarage Road loanee Andrew Taylor and Don Cowie, who was fit to play after sustaining an injury in the 3-2 defeat to Middlesbrough – but the Scot did make two changes. Joe Ralls was sidelined, while Craig Conway dropped to the bench, and in came Filip Kiss and Joe Mason.

The visitors went straight on the front foot, with Peter Whittingham having a 30-yard piledriver blocked after a minute, but they went much closer five minutes later when Gunnarsson clipped the ball back into the danger zone from the right side of the penalty area and Cowie connected with a superb header that was kept out by an even better save from Loach, plunging athletically to his left to concede a corner.

That set piece was repelled and from it the Hornets launched their first attack of note, with Troy Deeney hitting a 25-yard daisy-cutter that David Marshall could only parry but the Bluebirds keeper did well to block Sordell’s follow up, although the hosts’ top scorer was flagged offside.

Whittingham saw another effort from the edge of the area deflected over, leading to two corners in succession for Cardiff, before Cowie had another headed attempt loop onto the roof of the net.

The pressure continued on the Hornets’ goal, with Loach failing to get enough on an attempted clearing punch from a Gunnarsson long throw, and Cowie met the follow-up well on the half-volley, but saw it deflected over.

However, Mackay was forced into an unwanted change in the 18th minute when Darcy Blake replaced right-back Kevin McNaughton, who had been struggling since early on with a leg injury.

The Hornets had more problems to contend with Jonathan Hogg was harshly adjudged to have conceded a free-kick 25 yards out from his own goal but Whittingham could only hit the set piece against the wall.

But the home side immediately countered at pace and in numbers and although Mark Yeates’ ball into Sordell on the edge of the area gave the striker little option but to head it back in the direction it came, Hogg connected superbly on the run, forcing Marshall to claw the ball behind at his near post.

From the resultant corner, an off-balance Sordell sent what looked to be a good heading opportunity over the top but Watford’s appeals that he was being held fell on deaf ears with referee Patrick Miller.

The Hornets’ goal led something of a charmed life again as the half-hour approached when Carl Dickinson, who didn’t get the call he needed from his keeper, failed to get enough on a clearing header and Kenny Miller latched on to the ball on the right side of the area and hit a curling shot that Loach could only parry back out into the heart of the area where Whittingham shot back towards the target, only to see it bounce off the inside of the post and into the grateful arms of the Watford keeper.

Watford then enjoyed a decent spell in the opposition half, without being able to create anything clear cut, but it was Cardiff who had the last chance of the half.

The situation arose after the referee belatedly awarded a free-kick – and a yellow card – against Nyron Nosworthy for a foul on Miller in the centre circle and from the resultant set piece Kiss diverted the ball back across the area where Gunnarsson shot straight at Loach when an effort either side of him could have been very problematic.

The Bluebirds again almost made the breakthrough within two minutes of the restart when Loach, who was consistently being surrounded by white shirts at set pieces, again failed to deal with a set-piece delivery and Whittingham’s goal-bound follow-up looked like it might loop in, but was deflected over the top.

Watford had to see off four opposition corners in as many minutes at the start of the second half but then had a useful spell of their own, with Hogg seeing a well-struck effort blocked following a corner before Michael Kightly did well to dig out a cross from the left but Deeney was unable to direct his header on target.

Mackay made his second change in the 58th minute, bringing on Rudy Gestede for Kiss and switching to a 4-4-2 formation, before Yeates came in off the right flank and tried a left-footed shot that was deflected behind.

With their next attack though, Watford changed the complexion of the match.

The referee deserved credit for playing advantage when Sordell was being tugged back as he attacked from the left side of the area but the England Under-21 international then did extremely well, riding that challenge to get to the by-line before pulling the ball back for Buaben, who initially looked to have turned into a cul-de-sac but the Ghanaian midfielder kept his head and squeezed the ball through a crowded goalmouth to score his first goal for the Hornets and send the Rookery wild.

Mackay made his final change in the 74th minute, with Conway replacing Mason, but the Hornets were now the more threatening of the two sides, with Taylor seeing yellow after tripping Sordell on the edge of the area but Yeates could only curl the resulting dangerous free-kick into the wall.

With ten minutes remaining though, came another horrible mix-up in the Hornets backline – and in much the same way as the own goal Mariappa scored against Bristol City, the Watford skipper had every right to question the manner in which his keeper dealt with a seemingly straightforward situation.

The goal arose from a Gunnarsson long throw that was arrowed into the near post and Mariappa got up, only to flick the ball beyond his own keeper, who had belatedly, but with little conviction, decided to come off his line and try and claim it.

It was an awful moment for the Hornets, who were in control of proceedings, but they went again and with four minutes left almost scored a second when a Yeates free-kick from the left found Kightly unmarked near the edge of the six-yard box but Marshall was able to save his header.

Watford: Loach; Hodson, Nosworthy, Mariappa, Dickinson; Yeates, Hogg, Buaben, Kightly; Deeney, Sordell. Not used: Eustace, Jenkins, Doyley, Iwelumo and Bond.

Cardiff City: Marshall; McNaugton (Blake 18), Hudson, Turner, Taylor; Whittingham; Cowie, Kiss (Gestede 58), Gunnarsson, Mason (Conway 74); Miller. Not used: Gerrard and Heaton.

Bookings: Nosworthy for a foul on Miller (45); Taylor for a foul on Sordell (78).

Attendance: 14,604.

Referee: Patrick Miller.

How many more times. Rubbish at catching, can't punch the ball, indecisive, useless on crosses.

Sorry but I know we'll get the usual, "leave Loach alone" brigade on here calling the rest of us serial Loach moaners but as steve says above, "how many more times?" Surely now is the time to try to get a reliable gk who the rest of the defense can trust and have some confidence in.
Having said all that, well done to Sean and the boys for a battling point against McKay's lot who are pretty good. Deffo 2 points dropped for them but it feels like the same for us, doesn't it?

stevemag says...

WHats got to happen for him to be dropped ?

Making good saves count for nothing when you make mistakes every game because sometimes those mistakes will cost you. Apart from that, the defense can't have alot of confidence in him.

Anyone seen Bond play or know how good he is? Can he do the basics like catch and punch ?!

Well played the rest of the team , particularly the brilliant Hogg, Nosworthy and Deeney.

I thought the ref had a shocker in the first half and must be eating welsh lamb for this evening's tea.

A well-earned point but, for the third game running, we turned three points into one, with a piece of awful defending.

To be honest, Loach had mis-punched at least three times before he belatedly came to clear-out the ball which, unfortunately, was back-headed by Mariappa into his own net.

Admittedly, Loach made a couple of good reaction saves during the game, but he is still far too slow to make decisions. He just seems to lack a goalkeeper's instinct for when to come, and when to stay. Neither the defence nor the crowd seem to have much confidence in his ability to clear his lines and command his box.

I can't remember a season when our goalkeeping options were so weak. Loach's form is becoming such a regular post-match grumble, that Dyche would do well to look at getting an experienced 30-plus stopper on loan.

It is actually quite sad, that Loach has gone from £2m prospect to a player who fills your stomach with butterflies, regularly during a match, and who we would do well to get 300k for.

However, on the plus side, I thought the team battled well, after a sluggish start. Yeates still gives the ball away far too often, but the team is starting to gel. Lovely bit of footwork from The Prince for the goal, and we had 10 shots on target to their 5.

Turning point of the match was when Sordell had a clear sight of goal on the edge of the box, at 1-0, and he was cynically chopped down. There was a defender in front of him, but he wouldn't have stopped the shot. In my view, it was a clear goalscoring opportunity. But the ref predictably gave a yellow. We did nothing with the resultant free-kick and Cardiff equalised within a couple of minutes. That's football.

I am a bit worried about what happens when Kightly goes back. We need to beat Donny, so we end the year on 30 points.

While the Saints and West Ham are going up, I would suggest whoever goes up in the play-offs will really struggle next season. There really isn't a lot of quality in this divison. With a slightly better squad, and fewer defensive howlers, we could well have been challenging for the play-offs.

Any way, well done Mr Dyche and the boys, and a Merry Xmas to everyone.

Yes Loachy messed up etc but that aside the team is coming along nicely. Fair play to Dyche for turning it around. Shame on those who slaughtered the guy last season.

The most important position on the pitch filled by an oaf. He is the worst 'keeper I have seen at Watford in 30 years.

His decision making as to when to come of his line or not is poor and I felt so sorry for the outfield players who must have been so disappointed having given everything, Cardiff showed little going forward and I felt were unlikely to score.

We need another keeper and another striker cos 23 goals this season is not great

To sum up though I think this team is beginning to come together and is beecoming very hard to beat.

I thought Cowie got the worst of it of which I cannot understand
He only ever praised and thanked this club unlike his fellow Sweaty.
Anyway I thought we were outplayed the first half but we looked good defensively ( except Loach who looked poor at every cross)
I thought we had the better of the second half

i have to blame the sean dyche for persevering with loach in goal, the writing was on the wall months ago, the sloppy mistakes were happening regulary then. Good point hornet09, whilst I agree Loach is causing us issues we are also losing sight of the fact we do not have a prolific goal scorer and Sordell is definatley off the boil for this role. 23 goals only so far and worse still is Knightly and Nosworthy loans are due to expire soon. The team is on a run and we are geling well but as we know when Cleverley and Lansbury left we struggled big time, let's hope this is not a repeat as I sure if we don't hold to or improve our squad we are doomed!

Probably the criticism of Loach is justified.
And oppos will increasingly be adopting the Cardiff approach of loading the six yard box and bombing in long throws, although the pace and distance generated by the Cardiff guys was exceptional.

Doubt the reserves are adequate so may have to look to the loan market in Jan.

I understand McKay with his post match comments albeit I think WFC deserved the 3 points but did you notice at the start Cardiff had a few long shots to test loach knowing his weakness at those and crosses.

For those of you still in the "lay off loach camp", take a look at the Cardiff highlights on Hornet player.

I was at the game yesterday and just watched the highlights...... Loach attempted to punch two or three times and presented Cardiff with gilt edged chances .... Why? Because the punches are more like patting the ball only 4 or 5 yards - no power and no conviction.

Goalkeepers are there to make saves but are supposed to be able to handle the basics of catching, punching and positioning.

I dread to think of the level of confidence he installs into the back four.

Graham Fransen was my favourite, as so many gullible people were taken in by my "Bas in disguise" comments, even many on the WFC Forum.

That was great fun. Shame it could not have lasted to Xmas.

Now I have opened up, I can sense another expulsion coming on, but hey ho, HYN to you all, including BB at the wobby.
Well maybe If we all keep it sensible common sense will prevail!
It's ok to disagree, after all we are not sheep ( Manky is though!)
I'm happy to admit that I didn't give Dyche enough time, and if he gets the goalie situation right and maybe bring on a decent goal getter I'll have real cause to eat a whole hattery ( tho not th horrid boaters made up the M1)
Keep it real Frannypants and I'll accept you were not 'tool'!

I have had many non de plumes, as you know, but honestly, please believe me, "Bouncing Tool" was not one of them. It was a wind up by someone, probably one of your mates from the salon? In the current state of affairs old buddie, there is not much I now disagree with you about (I think I am still full of the Xmas spirit)!

Manky and his mates deserved a more hostile reception.

SD is doing well, and improving game by game.

Loach is nothing more than an average Championship keeper, and needs some decent competition to either get him dropped, or improve drastically.

We both hate Luton!

I guess our only difference is over Bas?

I believe he is true to his word and will deliver all of his promises, provided he is given the necessary time by the fans. It takes time to build structures, pitches, stands etc.

He has delivered on the playing front, with 13 new players, and has promised to help SD to continue to improve the hardest team to beat in the Championship.

What else is there, old mutton?

HYN after 3 points from Donny.
With Bas the proof will be in the eating.
Again I would be very happy to be proved wrong.
I think after Homer Petchey and co it is easy to be cynical.
We've had two real good chances of being a yo yo team at very least only to have lost out to big egos both times.
Let's face it we have been lied to lots of time over the last few years.
I'd like to see a time frame for our new East stand to prove our ambitions.
We look to be losing Maps and Sordell if rumours are correct, I hope we get their true value and we get a decent sum back to reinvest.
Then I'll be shouting Bas in! And eating more damned hat...

As imlovingsean
Back calling me names
It surely a shame
The censors will call
On poor bouncing tool!

HBY to you dear adversary!
Poetry. nice one

Poetry in motion indeed.
But I can do better.

With a name like Lutondown,
It always fill me with a frown,
But when he reads the book of Kings,
Baldies go wild with better things,
It is a hair-less place at the Salon,
Reminds me a lot of Gavin Mahon,
On the razor is Sweeney Todd,
Venture there, not me you sod,
He keeps calling me Bouncing Tool,
When it wasn't me, what a fool,
With Buckler and the rest of the mob,
They remind me of that Luton slob,
At least they hate the swine Manky,
I hear he wipes his bum with his hanky
Taylor-made has become Nosworthy,
Climbing the table, we are now worthy,
What a goalie, shame about Loach,
Useless and the 6 yard box he does not approach,
Never mind it is Donny next,
The Good Book says 3 pts in my text,
And what a coach we have in Sean,
No sleep with him, not even a yawn.
HNY to you all as we rise to the top,
Bas is great, certainly not a flop.
For one so pious you do do blaspheme
When quoting thine bible on our football team
Histronics that descend us into the pits
Torn stockings, bad tempers and a big hissy fit
But Franny old buddy come see us some time
For a shave and a blow dry it's only a dime
The Salon it welcomes you and all mellow fellows
The dress code is rigid it must be all yellow

Can't tell Buckler to behave Panty man he's a big boy with his own mind!

Denney and harp, I just thinks this shows
The Pantyman is useless with prose
He postures and preaches with biblical wrath
And says there's two Hulls, can he not do the math?
He talks of the salon where the good congregate
He quotes from the bible, and embellishes with hate
He's friendless, he's trouble wherever ge goes
Not surprising wearing old soiled panty hose
He talks of dear Bas as if it's his Kin
This the good Christian whose so full of sin
He adores all the passion from dog kennel road
Old panty he really is a slimy old toad
But come all yea faithful to the quiet old vic
Where you could hold a funeral and hear A clock tick
But it is our dear Watford, and yellow we are
And I'm being forgiving to the mad and bizarre
And now in the distance I hear my dog snoring
He really does think your poems are boring
Your only redemption is being a rare Watford Fan
So on that note, happy new year, dear Pantyman!

Enough!!
Kipling out!
