Watford eight unbeaten after Doncaster Rovers victory

A happy Hornets new year A happy Hornets new year

Watford ended 2011 as they had started it – with a win – and they did it some style, beating Doncaster Rovers 4-1 to extend their unbeaten run to eight games.

The Hornets were the better side for much of the first half and deservedly took the lead shortly before the break with a fine run and finish from Marvin Sordell.

The visitors were level soon after the restart though, when Billy Sharp headed home a good cross from El-Hadji Diouf but the game swung back in the hosts’ favour when Herold Goulon was sent off for a second yellow card.

Within six minutes, Watford had capitalised on their numerical advantage when Sordell headed in his second to put the home side back in front and then the gloss was added late on.

John Eustace came off the bench to score with his second touch and then Michael Kightly, making the last home appearance of his current loan spell, netted a superb fourth, running at the Rovers rearguard before curling home from the edge of the area.

There was no surprise that Sean Dyche kept faith with the same starting line-up that drew with Cardiff City last time out. That meant Troy Deeney made his 200th career appearance, while Jonathan Hogg reached a half-century of professional games.

It didn’t take the Hornets long to get their first sight of goal, with Kightly’s run inside off the left setting up Sordell but Gary Woods got down to save the striker’s first-time left-footed shot after 23 seconds.

The visitors had their first half-chance when a Herita Ilunga long throw from the left bounced up for Diouf in the area but the former Blackburn Rovers striker was unable to control it and the ball ran through for Scott Loach.

Deeney, Prince Buaben and Mark Yeates then put together a nice one-touch passing move in and the Rovers area before the latter was flagged offside but the hosts went closer in the 16th minute when a deep Yeates corner from the left was met by Nyron Nosworthy, whose looping header clipped the top of the crossbar.

The game went flat for a while before a cross-field free-kick picked out Kightly, who came in off the left flank to test Woods with a stinging right-footed drive but Rovers were then forced into early change, with James O’Connor replacing the injured Pascal Chimbonda.

Goulon could have no complaints about picking up the game’s first yellow card in the 32nd minute for chopping down Lee Hodson. Again though, little else of note happened until Sharp sent an ambitious lob dipping over Loach’s bar from the right with three minutes of the half remaining.

A minute later though, the Hornets made the breakthrough in fine fashion.

Hodson did very well to win a challenge before finding Sordell, who advanced towards the edge of the area before almost placing the ball out of the reach of Woods and into the bottom right-hand corner to make it 1-0.

Having fallen behind, Doncaster could have been back in it almost immediately when James Coppinger found Sharp in space on the right side of the area but he was unable to pick out a team-mate with a ball across the six-yard box.

The visitors had rarely threatened the Hornets goal in the first half but within two minutes of the restart they were level.

Diouf, who had needlessly gestured to the Rookery when heading down the tunnel at the end of the opening 45 minutes, produced a superb cross from the left and Sharp did very well to get up above his man and beat Loach with a close-range header.

A Yeates shot over the bar apart, Watford created little after being pegged back but they were given a sizeable boost with 63 minutes gone when Goulon clearly fouled Kightly and referee Darren Drysdale showed the midfielder a second yellow card followed by a red.

Within six minutes, the Hornets had made their numerical advantage count when Yeates’ inswinging cross from the right was met by the head of Sordell, who steered it beyond Woods to make it 2-1.

And six minutes after that Deeney spurned a glorious chance to score the third, glancing a Yeates cross down and wide of the far post when unmarked on the edge of the six-yard box.

Sordell almost completed his hat-trick soon after but hit a shot on the turn straight at Woods after more good work by Kightly.

Dyche decided to make a change with seven minutes remaining, bringing on Eustace for Buaben, and it reaped almost instant rewards, with the substitute running on to a bouncing ball to strike a left-foot shot past Woods and score with his second touch after Doncaster had made a hash of defending.

Chris Iwelumo and Joe Garner also came on for the closing stages, replacing Deeney and Sordell respectively, but there was still time for the Hornets to add a delightful fourth – Kightly latching on to a poor clearance and attacking the Rovers ranks before curling home from the edge of the area.

Watford: Loach; Hodson, Nosworthy, Mariappa, Dickinson; Yeates, Hogg, Buaben (Eustace 83), Kightly; Deeney (Iwelumo 87), Sordell (Garner 87). Not used: Doyley and Bond.

Doncaster Rovers: Woods; Chimbonda (O’Connor 26), Hird, Beye, Ilunga; Coppinger, Barnes, Goulon, Gillett (Bennett 83); Diouf (Hayter 87), Sharp. Not used: Friend and Maxted.

Bookings: Goulon for a foul on Hodson (32); Sharp for dissent (58); Goulon for a foul on Kightly – sent off (63); Diouf for dissent (65).

Attendance: 11,654.

Referee: Darren Drysdale.

Strong professional performance....same culprits as usual were the stars for me.... Hogg, Kightly, Noseworthy, Mariappa and Hodson.

Pleasant change also in that there wasn't any obviously bloomers from old butterfingers Loach!

If only for the 6 thoraway points (Bristol , Leeds and Cardiff).

Not Sordell?
We're starting to look good and my only negative is the loan and transfer situation.
If we can get a winning run going we may even be chasing Cardiff for a play off place!
Happy new year to friend Foe those I agree with and those I don't
And dear Franny a happy new year to you. I miss your humour.

Very convincing win after a slow start.

Guess the key 2 moments were Marvin's well taken 1st and the sending off which quite frankly was coming some way off.

Nice way for Kightly to sign off and Eustace must have scored with his 3rd touch?

I don't think Loach and co had anything to do apart from pick the ball out of his net.

Simple win and great way to end the year.

Band were very good after the Pre-match seat confusion was sorted out!

Wish kightly could stay longer, and Nos permanently.

Well done SD, you've really turned things around. Well done the band too!

Great game of football, and good that Watford did not sit back after retaking the lead.

I made it three touches for Eustace: two well directed headers that helped to set up the attack, and a thumping drive with his first kick of the game when it appeared to have broken down.

Harry the Hornet must also get a mention. Having failed to rouse the Rookery he turned to the band and got them to do the job for him. Then he really entered into the spirit by an obligato first on the cymbals and then on the trumpet. I think he was hoping to share the post match bath with the majorettes!

A truly memorable game for all the right reasons. COYH!

Great game. Goulon - what a plank. I was actually a bit miffed that Kightly scored cos McCarthy will def want him back. Sordell's 2 goals should add some £s to his value. Felt like we were applauding Marvin for the last time in a Watford shirt. Hope I'm wrong. Almost certain that Kightly won't be back. All in all a thoroughly deserved victory & nice teamwork with no weak links. So happy for John Eustace who looked really sharp. COYH. Happy New Year y'all

Agree with above, a good all round performance and a great way to end the year. Lots of possitives although the way that Kightly reacted after his goal signalled that he knows that he will be heading back for sure, thanks of rsome great performances along with Nosworthy who I hope that Martin O'Neil (who I think was in the stands) did not notice how good he is.

Band were great as they were last time they visited, pity they could not be there every week.

Happy New Year All, lets start climing that table in 2012 and get the buzz back at the Vic.

Jumped for joy down here in SA as every goal went in. Thank god for Watford Player to keep me in touch as it happens. As I read the report above, I realize that Kightly was mentioned time and time again. I hope our run doesn't end with his return to Wolves. Surely Dychey and Woaney will have a contingency up their sleeves????

HNY everyone. Hope it's a good 'un for us all.

Do we all feel a little bit guilty with our
SD out ? we are no different than the supporters at other clubs, I know we only feel passionate about the Hornets, but lets just reflect a moment.
Well done Shaun, keep it going .

Deserved win but the margin flattered. A sending off sometimes helps the 10 men but not today. Watford capitalised on the extra man. SD may now have a problem on who to pick - two from Hogg, Bauben and Eustace? I didn't think Marvin was playing well until his brilliant goal and we still lack firepower. Hodson was well beaten by Diouf for their goal but otherwise has a good game against physically strong opponents. At one point Adrian hoofed the ball onto the terrace rather than pass back to Loach which leaves us with an unresolved weakness into the new year. We've played better and got less than today but the side feels more solid now and more confident going forward to 2012.

Nice way to end the year and now well clear of the drop zone.

Thought the new Donny were an absolute disgrace - so different to the good footballing side they were under O'Driscoll.

Pleased that Eustace replaced the wasteful Bauben, high time JE and Hogg were given another chance to start together.

Good displays throughout the team although judging by the way Kightly celebrated his goal he won't be coming back to the Vic again soon.

Let's hope we can keep the loanees and our own home-grown stars for a while yet and make it 9 unbeaten at Pompey.

Come on you Golden Boys - Cheer, Cheer! (hands sore through excessive clapping).

Happy New Year to all true Hornets supporters wherever you may be.

Excellent win - great to see us properly put away a team when we're in a position to do so. Not sure it would have been so comfortable against 11, but Doncaster looked like the random collection of agency loanees they are rather than a coherent team, especially when down to 10.
Quality goals all round. Great last home performance from Kightly - obviously going back to Wolves, hence not caring about his goal celebration booking. Good luck to him back at his home club. Hope Nosworthy can stay, though.
Genuinely optimistic about the rest of the season - only possible issue might be coping without some loan players and the effect of possible sales.
Happy New Year to Horns everywhere.

Excellent entertainment all round, Harry and his antics to get the crowd going especially offering to give first aid to one of the Donny oafs, the excellent majorette band who played with musical talent (makes X factor wannabes's look and sound second rate) and of course the glory boys, Marv, Kites etc. Great to see a returning hero, Big Ross with the dodgy pony tail (at least his still got his hair). I to hope we can keep with what we have at the moment but as we all know as hornet supporters that, may not be the case come, February. Lets enjoy the moment and hope that 2012 is a golden year for all us long suffering supporters.
Happy New year!

I agree Dolly. I have been firmly against unnecessary negative posts but even I joined the chorus a few weeks back & thought maybe the board needed to act. Sorry Sean. You really do understand the beautiful game & the coherency of the team's recent displays has been very pleasing. Keep him Laurence.

They say you reap what you sow and as long as its maintained new shoots will grow well,.. having just seen the BBC report on our egg ball loving lodgers today, it seems the conditions were awful!
Does this mean our out of date/best before pitch has been transformed into the a scene from the Somme again?
Me thinks, we have a few more bobbly moments to come this season. At least we got young safe hands as our last line of defence to rely on!(chuckle)

Quotations from Sir Scullian!
Mind you I remember when the pitch had more sand than grass in winter months, and poor old Les Simmonds the groundsman with pitching fork in hand when a bucket and spade would have sufficed.
It's a shame the two clubs could not have come to a proper agreement that
saw investment in the ground and state of the art technology for the pitch.
But as they never the sooner they've gone the better. I say that being a Rugby player and fan.

Oh how we wish that was the case at the start of this season. I to remember the snow sweeping days and yes, the sandy pitch of days of yonder and a bygone era.
I know its always easier in hindsight but, you would have thought that the 2 clubs could have agreed on updating the pitch as a condition for continual use this season, I say this also as a fan of both clubs.
By the look of their problems with planning restrictions etc, they may be here longer than we think. Watch that space.

It has been suggested that GT is very anti Sarries. It does appear that Bassini seems to be more amicable with the egg chasers.
I was also one of the several thousand who took Sarries to heart when they come to our town but did not like some of the noise about moving to LOndon to target the large south African fan base.
There was no mention of those of us who had followed them.
Let's face it when they drew 19000 to watch them play Leicster a few years back it was not made up of old Millhillians!
