Watford beaten at Portsmouth as keeper sees red

Watford’s eight-match unbeaten run is over after a below-performance saw them beaten 2-0 at Portsmouth and finish the game with ten men following the dismissal of the impressive Scott Loach.

The Hornets keeper had made some good saves in the first half in which the hosts were the better side, without dominating, but the hosts upped their game after the break and took the lead through Marko Futacs.

Liam Lawrence had a goal ruled out for offside before Loach, who was otherwise his side’s best performer, was harshly sent off for deliberate handball after coming out for a ball towards the edge of his area.

Jonathan Bond came on for his Watford debut but within minutes he was picking the ball out of his net as Hayden Mullins wrapped up the win.

Although the Hornets were playing their second game in three days, there was no surprise that Sean Dyche again started with the same team that racked up the biggest victory of the season so far on Saturday, 4-1 over Doncaster Rovers, given he had no fresh injury problems.

After the hosts had shaded the opening five minutes, it was Watford who created the first opening when Mark Yeates’ slide-rule pass put Troy Deeney in, but the striker was unable to stretch his right leg far enough to reach the ball.

But Pompey’s response was instant. First Erik Huseklepp had a goal-bound piledriver deflected narrowly wide of Loach’s right-hand post, with the Hornets keeper helpless, and from the resultant corner Futacs also saw an effort from inside the box helped over the bar by a Watford defender.

Huseklepp was certainly in a shooting mood and saw another long-range strike deflected wide, although this time Loach had it covered, but the Hornets weathered that early mini barrage and the game became more even as the halfway point of the opening half approached.

David Norris struck a left-footed shot wide from a Dave Kitson knock down but the Hornets were doing well at frustrating their opponents, although Loach did have to make a smart stop in the 31st minute when a low Huseklepp centre was inadvertently turned towards his own goal by former Portsmouth loanee Jonathan Hogg.

The Watford keeper had to make an even better save minutes later, diving full length to tip a Kitson drive around his right-hand post, and he was called into action again two minutes before the break.

The visitors were to a degree unfortunate that Lee Hodson’s attempted interception to Huseklepp’s pass fell straight for Kitson on the edge of the area, but they were then thankful that Loach was able to help his rasping, rising drive over the top.

Having survived that, Watford were not too far away from taking the lead with their first attempt of the match in the last minute of the half. Yeates’ free-kick from the right and just inside the opposition half fell for Prince Buaben in the area but his shot was deflected narrowly wide.

Kitson had the first chance of the second period when he was picked out by Joe Mattock’s cross from the left but he couldn’t generate enough power on the header and Loach was able to comfortably save.

But there was nothing comfortable about the save Loach made soon after, diving away to his left to superbly tip away a stinging Lawrence drive that was destined for the inside of the far post.

But the Hornets were still regrouping as Lawrence quickly took the resultant corner and Futacs was found in space in the heart of the area to head the hosts into a 1-0 lead.

After Carl Dickinson had picked up the game’s first yellow card for a foul on Mullins, Loach again had to show impressive reactions to beat away a shot from Norris. Mullins also fired narrowly wide of the near post as the home side sought to further capitalise on their advantage.

Dyche decided to make his first change after 65 minutes, bringing on Chris Iwelumo for Deeney, moments after the striker was again unable to get on the end of a ball in the box following good work by Kightly.

Adrian Mariappa was rightly booked a minute later for a mistimed challenge on Mullins but moments after John Eustace came on for Yeates, Pompey thought they had doubled their lead.

Loach was again involved, parrying a Mattock drive back out to his left where Lawrence reacted first to head home but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Kightly did have a shot held at the second attempt by Stephen Henderson before Loach racing towards the edge of this area, with referee Iain Williamson producing a red card after adjudging the keeper had handled in the process of going over Kitson.

After Bond came on for his debut in place of Buaben, and shown some nice composure with his first touches, the keeper was soon picking the ball out of his net after Mullins had been found in space in the heart of the area and finished left-footed at the second attempt.

Futacs wasn’t far away from making it three during six minutes of injury time, seeing a stinging left-footed drive from the edge of the area clip the top of the bar as it went over, with the hosts finishing deserved victors.

"Bond showed some nice composure" - that's more like it.

Now liability Loach has managed to obviously mis-time his clearance and get sent off for handball I'm hoping this will mean an extended run for Jonathan Bond.

So no Loach. How good is the kid Bond? Best we get another Prem goalie that wants some first team games?

Loach was man of the match for us today and the sending off was a joke, how can it be deliberate if you are pushed into the ball. So maybe you k**bs should go and watch the game before coming up with ill-informed ignorant comments.

Surely its only Bradford Loach is suspended for so Bond with Bonham on the bench should be ok and good experience for both. No point calling Gilmartin back for one game although we did tell Yeovil he couldn't play in their second round game so he'll probably be back. Sounds like a poor performance, a decent game from Loach barring the sending off, the run was always going to end at some point so let's move on! At least some players like Hogg and Sordell might get a rest before the Reading game now.

Terry Dactile or is it teradactor ?

I'm going on the last 12 months performances. Three good saves followed by a blunder is not what we need. If you knew anything about football you wouldn't make such stupid comments.

you had to be there to witness just how dire that display was, we struggled to string 2 passes together from the first minute to the last & with Deeney & Yeates being particularly useless it was like playing with 9 men!

Very disappointing performance but hardly surprising given the number of games played recently by the same group of players.

Sean & the team have done brilliantly over the past two months but could well have benefitted from making a few changes to freshen things up.

Still, credit to the manager & team for a 8-game unbeaten run, which should instill confidence for the tough schedule ahead. Let's hope SD can rest a few next week and they'll be back on form against Reading the week after.

Come on You Golden Boys! Clap, Clap, Clap

Unless you get a keeper in like it or not Loach is the best keeper at the club. The sending off today was harsh to say the least & without his saves we could have lost by 4 or 5.

What would you prefer Steve: a good steady performance and three goals against? By all accounts, Loach was very unlucky to be red-carded. The assistant ref initially flagged for a foul, but was then over-ruled. So even if Loach did handle the ball, it could hardly have been deliberate.

I guess there may be some dust to settle before Reading, so the Cup game will give us a chance to bed in a new formation. Mariappa and Doyley at centre-back if Taylor's not yet fit?

Keep the faith! First defeat in 9, and 1.5 points a game puts us on the fringe of the play-offs. COYH!

sorry casterbridge you are wrong watch the sky pictures and you will see lino clearley flagged against loach

the guy makes too many mistakes , no good making a few good saves then a rash decision costing us, his job he is paid for is to make saves not make stupid rash decisions that cost us points

Taxi for loach !

Yeates is getting away murder! He is absolutely crap week after week. Yet no one seems to notice and he gets picked every game! As for Loach, a few routine saves and sent off! Hope that loser Jewell comes knocking!

As for loach, tell me I need glasses but I've seen sky and it looks to me like he came racing out to head the ball and, yet again, mis-timed the run and was not getting anywhere near heading it.

I hear he made several good saves but as per usual we are talking about the goalkeeper. I can't remember the last time he looked solid with no errors.

Sorry boys but Loachie was unfortunate with sending off. A bad decision by a poor ref. He made some good saves and I thought we were still celebrating our result from Box day by the way many and I mean many played today.
A kick up the jaxies today.
Kights and Nos were rubbish today!

i agree totally with buckler on yeates, all he does is run around like a blue arse fly and hardly ever gets a cross in, constantly hitting against a defender or doing grass cutter crosses, Loach will not come off his line for crosses or out to claim, his timing for these decisions is awful at best.

Loach made a few decent saves but I blame him for the first goal. He was so busy moaning at the defence that he had his back to play and was woefully out of position when they took a quick corner - so much so that when the ball is headed in to the back of the net, he's legging it back into the middle of the goal trying to get back into position.

That for me was worse than the dismissal, and there is no way he was man of the match for me.

Still, we're on a good run, and am sure we'll bounce back. Gutted to see Kightly go!

I agree that yeates can be ineffectual for long periods. But his delivery is generally good and he tends to create a few goals for us - sordell's 2nd on boxing day for example. So for me he stays in the team, especially when we are already having to replace one winger.

Totally agree with you both. He wastes so many chances to put in a decent ball. He is a journeyman and cant quite see how more people dont see this. Loach's mistakes aside Yeates has been the weak link in the side over the past 2 months. Replacing Kightly is a priority but I feel Yeates has to be dropped also. There is no threat from free kicks or corners this season and this is a result of the man taking them.

Interesting that people are trying to blame Loach for the sending off. Having seen it on SSN, it's pretty obvious that the Pompey player runs straight through Loach as he's in midair, without bothering to play the ball. It was a foul-that's why Loach ended up horizontal as he handballed it. Awful decision. But something like that won't stop the Loach out brigade, will it?

Chris the Vic says...

NLFG I was at the game and from 80 yds away I got the impression that your version of what happened may well be correct I will be interested in seeing it. All I can add to the incident is that the officials were desperately bad gave us virtually nothing but our performance did not warrant a point.

With regard to Loach, before you express too much support we should look at how the first goal was given away.

Portsmouth put in a shot from their left that ran accross our goal for a corner. Loach as usual charged off to his right to remonstrate with Lee hodson. Earlier in the first half Loach had punched out to the opposition as usual but he fails to see his own mistakes.

Whilst remonstrating with hodson those disrespectful Pompey players got the ball to the corner and Loach rushed back but before he could set himself, yes he was totally in the wrong position, they took the early corner and won the header for the goal with Scottie stranded.

Now the WO say he was impressive but in truth Scott made two big mistakes and we were punished. he did not lose the header but he failed to cut the corner out or even get near to saving the header.

So NLFG go back and watch the build up to the first goal and then explain why Scott is such a good goalie and a brilliant team mate.

As for yeates surprised he is getting so much stick for weeks he has failed to make a tackle or do too much. In the last two games he has made four tackles and done little else. On the other hand I could say the same about the lazy Sordell but on occasions he does do something that changes a game but overall he is no Danny
Graham.

What a load of rubbish if Yeates is so bad how come he is second in the Championship assists with 8 and is our top assist man. After him it is Sordell with 3, I would suggest it would not be the best thing to drop Yeates, I agree he can be frustrating and inconsistant but he is one of the few players we have with quality and flair, We will need him even more now Kightly has gone.

It just goes to show there are statistics that just cannot be right.

I apologise for going to matches and watching what happens but did someone say Yeates delivery was good.

free kicks against the wall, corners totally overhit or so underhit they dont get past the first defender.

I know his tackling is woeful but the reason we play him is because the alternative in Sean's eyes is Forsyth.

What games you been watching Bozo?
All of them this season and as i said Yeates can be frustrating as he is inconsistant but the fact remains he has created 8 of our goals this season directly plus he is our second top scorer. I dont think his cross for the second goal againt donny was to bad on his wrong foot?
Lets go back to forsyth and deeney on the wings!
great stuff

Yes he sends a few bad balls in but he's not Ashley Young people! He does have bad games when he shows the strength of a 10 year old and can't beat a man to save his life but without him we'd be 10 goals worse off this season. Apart from Hodson maybe he's the best crosser we have!
