Hornets suffer third straight league loss

By Anthony Matthews »

Watford’s problems are mounting again after they suffered a third straight league defeat with a 3-0 loss at Birmingham City.

Two of the goals came from an unexpected source, centre-half Curtis Davies, who capitalised on poor marking to head the Blues in front nine minutes before the break before he doubled his tally with a far-post header from a corner on the hour-mark. Chris Burke then made certain of the points for Chris Hughton’s in-form side with the third eight minutes from time.

The Hornets had gone into the game with a change of approach, deploying a five-man midfield behind lone striker Marvin Sordell. The signs prior to Birmingham taking the lead - and for a spell at the start of the second half - had been encouraging but, as with last week’s defeat to Reading, Watford lacked a creative edge and end product, managing just four goal attempts in the whole game and only one of which was on target.

Sean Dyche made just the one change from the side that suffered a late defeat against the Royals seven days previously. Jonathan Hogg returned after missing that game with a knee injury, with Craig Forsyth dropping to the bench.

The result of this was Watford opened the contest with a 4-1-4-1 formation, with Hogg playing the main sitting role in front of the back four, John Eustace operating more advanced and Prince Buaben the furthest forward of the three central midfielders. Mark Yeates switched to the left, with Troy Deeney offering offensive support to Sordell from the right.

The Hornets were the better side in the opening stages on a pitch that was wearing in places, looking confident and retaining possession well and they created the first opening in the ninth minute Hogg played a fine angled pass to the right side of the area to put Marvin Sordell through towards goal but with the angle against him. The Hornets top scorer initially looked to square the ball, with keeper Boaz Myhill trying to second guess his opponent, but with Buaben crowded out, he played it back to Deeney, who tried to come inside but was up against too many blue shirts.

Watford continued to be positive but they were almost caught out on the counter-attack in the 17th minute when the pacey Burke attacked and beat Carl Dickinson on the outside before sending over a deep cross that Scott Loach had to claw away. The ball was instantaneously played back into the danger zone by Vicarage Road old boy Marlon King but he was unable to pick out a team-mate.

Although it took the visitors until the 24th minute to have their first attempt – Yeates dragging a left-footed effort from the edge of the area well wide – the start to the match had being encouraging, particularly from the five-man midfield.

Eustace was also off target with a half-volley from 18 yards soon after before Birmingham’s other player with strong opposition connections, former loanee Jordon Mutch, mustered the first on target attempt of the game, but Loach was always comfortably behind his curling effort from inside the D.

However, it took some smart defending from Lee Hodson to prevent Mutch going closer with his next effort in the 34th minute – the right-back getting marginally in front of the onrushing midfielder to deflect his header from Burke’s right-sided cross over the top. But Birmingham were not to be denied for much longer.

Following the resultant corner from the left, the ball was kept alive and Keith Fahey flighted over a cross from the right side of the area and Davies was not picked up as he planted a firm header past the helpless Loach to make it 1-0 to the hosts.

And that was the way it stayed until the interval, although the visitors could have perhaps made more of a free-kick in injury-time when Yeates’ delivery from the right was missed by a defender and the ball rather hit Buaben, who was not alert to the situation.

King’s afternoon against his former club came to a premature end in the 51st minute when he was replaced by Adam Rooney because of what looked to be a groin injury, but moments later Byhill had to get sharply down to his left to keep out a snap shot from Deeney.

Like in the first half, Watford were the brighter of the two sides in the opening minutes of the second period, only to find themselves two down on the hour to Davies’ second of the match.

The situation again arose from a corner after Burke had come in off the left flank and seen his shot blocked behind, but this time the set piece was struck deep beyond the far post where Davies arrived late, and unmarked again, to send a fine header back across goal to put the Blues firmly in control.

Nikola Zigic earned the game’s first yellow card on 63 minutes for persistent fouling before Dyche decided to make his first change, with Chris Iwelumo replacing Buaben.

Watford tried to get back into the game, without really threatening, but the next chance came Birmingham’s way with 11 minutes remaining when Zigic tamely headed a cross from the left through to Loach.

But Birmingham made the game safe with eight minutes remaining when Burke drilled a shot from the right side of the area past Loach after the Hornets keeper had pulled off a tremendous save to keep out Jonathan Spector's looping header following a ball in from the left side of the area.

Both sides made changes soon after – Wade Elliott and Nathan Redmond replacing Zigic and Jean Beausejour for the hosts and Hogg making way for Ross Jenkins – before Loach was again forced into a save to prevent Redmond from making it four with a low drive from the left side of the area.

Birmingham City: Myhill; Caldwell, Davies, Murphy; Burke, Mutch, Fahey, Beausejour (Redmond 84); King (Rooney 51), Zigic (Elliott 84). Not used: Doyle, and Gomis.

Watford: Loach; Hodson, Nosworthy, Mariappa, Dickinson; Hogg (Jenkins 84); Deeney, Eustace, Buaben (Iwelumo 71), Yeates; Sordell. Not used: Forsyth, Doyley and Bond.

Bookings: Zigic for persistent fouling (63); Dickinson for persistent fouling (88).

Attendance: 18,681.

Referee: Trevor Kettle.

Depressing to see Buckley scores two

Can't see where the goals will come from.

I live in the U.S.A. now so I don't get too many opportunities to watch the Hornets these days. I did however see the Reading game and was very disappointed with the way the team played and it appears probably a similar display today. It seems they lack any imagination at all, the back four just booting the ball upfield at every opportunity. This team is destined for the drop playing this brand of "football".

Message for Buckler, just to say we have missed you on the Argus site with your witty contributions about us buying your rejects. In case your not aware one of them scored both goals in our away win today at Peterborough today, just thought i'd share it with you. For all the other Watford fans, good luck for the rest of the season, you are a good club with decent fans.

What a shambles. If mariappa goes to Newcastle then god help us. Perhaps a couple of seasons in Div 1 would be a good thing. Rebuild the team and the stadium. Cant keep on relying on other teams losing.

Wow! The sight of Iwelumo and Jenkins coming on as substitutes must have struck fear in Birmingham hearts. Or perhaps not!We need a Kightly - somebody who can do something with the ball. We have three good players in Hogg, Sordell and Mariappa. Three is not enough.Where are the players like Cleverly, Lansbury, Mutch, Adam Johnson and Foster who played such big roles in keeping us in the Championship? If we cannot get anyone on loan please, SD, use the youngsters.

Well don't know what my ol mucker said to you sensitive souls but I've seen your lot a few times and your team plays the game as it should be. Where we are a kick and hope team. I was a Buckley fan and he could do something out of the ordinary. We have no one who can at the moment.

To be honest its only banter nothing unpleasant. I have to say Buckley at a 1 mill is turning out to be a real bargain,as you say he has the ability to change a game with some real pace and skill,he knows where the goal is too. The game at Vicerage road was pretty dire, think you deserved the win,i hope you can make it to the Amex for the return.

SD doesn't get it one shot on goal the whole ninety minutes says it all. It was the same problem in the early part of the season.. Now three bad defeats in a row. The rot has set in again.

When SD come out with we have enough quality already seems to me he wants to ingratiate himself with Bassini to keep his job.

Marriapa seems more in demand than Sordell I think we all agree we only have three decent players Sordell, Marriapa and Hogg, just too many passengers, if we don't go down it will be pure luck thanks to the three teams below us still six points behind.

The majority of the team and the coaching staff just not up to keeping us in the championship. If we go down that's it, its over back to 6000,7000 crowds loss of big tv money etc. Its just so depressing.

Even though I have always wanted Warnock to manage Watford I think we have Dyche for the rest of the season whatever happens.
I doubt Warnock could do much better currently given the resources available.
We all want more creativity now that Kightly has gone but the point most of us are forgetting is that a player of that quality has a market value way in excess of £1M and there surely can't be many of those available in the loan market we exist in.
On balance I think that even though our better youngsters are not exactly setting the world alight this season I would much prefer to see some youthful exuberance and pace coming off the bench than Ewelumu and jenkins ( I know he is still relatively young but he doesnt have pace).

OK, so we need more quality. Sean knows that we need more quality. And don't be so hard that we signed a number of players who had not achieved their potential. Of course it was a risk, but it was all we could afford. Henderson was a similar risk for Millwall, and look at him now.

The good news is that the players we have had on loan have gone back to their clubs and done very well, and spoken well of the club and how they settled in. That must encourage other managers and players to pick Watford over other clubs. Fingers crossed!

Meanwhile, I think it is fair to say that big Chris has had his chance, and that it is right to give some of the youngsters another crack of the whip. Not least because one of the Academy selling points is that youngsters will get a chance of first team football at Watford, when they wouldn't even make the bench at some larger clubs.

Whoever Sean picks, though, the best we can do is to get behind them and keep encouraging. COYH!

The only player who has gone back is Kightly (under Dyche) he was here for rehab, he was also the only real bright spark. As suspected it would all be back to where it was before he come!
We played a different game under MacTosh that would have appealed to managers that wanted to farm their players out to develop.
And tell me what is breaking out of this much fabled acadamy? I don't see them being given a run, and it seems several of them not wanted when loaned out.
There is nothing to get excited about. Even our better run was littered with draws.
Sorry Casterbridge it's a dire time to be a Watford fan and I fear it's going to get worse

I don't think colin wan#ker is the answer unless he has 3 million to put in the transfer kitty

Give Sean a chance and a few quid and he will get it right

Well, as usual it takes a couple of defeats to bring out the 'I told you so' idiots that subscribe to red top sensationalism. Murdoch would love ya, boys!
The thing is, we all know we are on a learning curve this season with SD and lets face a few facts, we don't have the resource at the moment after the departure of Kightly who, we bought back to fitness.
As much as we all think that we should be playing any one else other, than who makes the team we need to be looking outside of the box, elsewhere and to what is available!
I honestly believe, over the next couple of weeks we will see new additions.
Support and keep it constructive.

Hornet Cornet, what a long time a week in football is, 3 weeks is even longer. Weve just come off a 11 game unbeaten run, Dyche got short listed for manager of the month, so now we are going through the dip that every team has GET A LIFE SON. like most posters on here you post on here to get peoples backs up. Lets get back to the real forum this one sucks.

Hasn't he had a few quid to spend? And not very wisely at that
Sorry to say that even on our great unbeaten run we were by and large drawing games
Look he persists with that game changing substitution of Ilewumo and Jenkins, and though losing is never good it tastes better when you give it a good go.
Our club is flat especially at home, and is a real forum one where everyone agrees?

Look on the bright side. Nottm F are 3 points behind their number of games, so we may need only 13 more from the 19 games we have left.

However, I don't think it will come to that. Although it is said that we never create enough chances, the fact is that we have dropped no fewer than 16 points from winning positions! In other words, our results have belied our performance.

So may be not the play-offs for us this year, but neither do I feel that relegation is a serious threat.

"on a learning curve" "don't have the resources". I'm not sure which of these quotes is most deluded! I'm sick to death of hearing about our supposed lack of resources. Plenty of money came into the club in the summer, bassini (who none of us should trust) even told dyche to go and spend some of it in august. As someone said in a previous post, if we go down and dyche is still in charge he'll be bleating (or growling in his case) about how sheff wed, sheff utd, charlton etc have more resource than us. If boothroyd and GT had worried about lack of resource we would never have played in the premier league! Any manager that continues to put iwelumo and Jenkins on the bench needs to have a good look at their own managerial abilities and stop whinging about 'resource'.

Right as ever mateyand Mr magoo, dyche only got nominated because we didn't lose, not because we were winning. i will voice my opinion, if you don't like it then tough boobies .

I'm amazed! Relegation isn't a serious threat? Have you looked at the table? We're right there in the proverbial my friend and it's getting tighter and tighter, not only with every defeat but with every draw as well. Wake up!

Could it be that SD is obliged (pressured perhaps) to play players that we have paid money for rather than let the youngsters have a go - particularly Wichelow? Sometimes happens.

Maybe but no harm in putting the youngsters on the bench surely.

Does Dyche really rate Big Chris higher than Garner and Jenkins as more of a threat than Murray/Whichelow?

seen the goals on the football league show, three crosses, led to three goals.
Yeates showing no effort to shut the first cross down, Loach nowhere to be seen, and Eustace making an appalling clearance for the third. If you get a chance see how Watford players are in the box supposed to be defending, surely this doesnt help the goalie either, and lets face it he doesnt need any help conceding.
