Captain fantastic helps Watford secure win

Photograph of the Author By Frank Smith »

A double from an unlikely source helped Watford secure another well-earned 2-1 win against Barnsley.

The Hornets captain John Eustace doubled his tally for the season as he scored in either half – the first an acrobatic volley from the edge of the area.

Scott Golbourne set up a tense finish with a goal five minutes from time but it was a deserved three points for Watford.

Both sides named the same starting XI as midweek, with Troy Deeney and Joe Garner again looking to fill the void left by Marvin Sordell’s move to Bolton Wanderers and second-year scholar Sean Murray and Fulham loanee Alex Kacaniklic on the flanks.

Watford were on top for almost the whole of the first half and were first to have a real attempt at goal. After a spell of real pressure, Jonathan Hogg beat his man wide left and whilst he pull back was completely missed by Garner’s wild swing, the ball ended up with Eustace and his placed shot from 20 yards went narrowly wide.

The Hornets were the much better side in the first half an hour and a neat flick from Garner released Alex Kacaniklic on the left and his shot was saved by Luke Steele.

Watford were playing with width and superb play from Lee Hodson saw the youngster get to the byline and pick out Troy Deeney but his header went straight in the air and the ball was claimed by Steele.

Kacaniklic then shot a good five yards wide from a free kick to round off a convincing opening 20 minutes from Watford.

The visitors had to wait until just before the half-hour mark to have their first attempt of note but Scott Loach made light work of Rob Edwards’ header from a Michael Tonge corner.

But it was a rare highlight for Barnsley and Watford took the lead soon after when Murray’s free kick was deflected into the air and from 20 yards, Eustace found the far corner with an acrobatic strike.

The loudest cheer of the half though came in the dying moments when Lloyd Doyley picked up the ball just inside the Barnsley half and attacked the opposing full back. His shot was blocked but any excuse for the chant of “We’ve got Lloydinho.”

There were fewer chances early in the second half. John Eustace’s header wide, when Garner had picked out his run, and Murray’s wayward effort from distance were the only two opportunities of note.

Barnsley could have equalised midway through the half when Eustace didn’t track the run of Andy Gray at a free kick but the striker headed over.

And minutes later the Hornets skipper all but secured another three points when Garner helped on Doyley’s long throw and Eustace bundled his way through the defence to slot home with the outside of his boot.

Watford continued to be the better side and had the next few chances. Murray had a shot blocked, Deeney fired over and then the striker had an effort saved at the near post – after ignoring calls from the unmarked Garner.

The visitors had rarely troubled the Watford backline but poor defending from Korey Smith’s cross allowed substitute Scott Golbourne to smash home inside the box.

Murray shot over not long after and following a surprising five minutes of added time, Watford held on for the victory.

Watford: Loach; Hodson, Nosworthy, Mariappa, Doyley; Murray, Eustace, Hogg, Kacaniklic (Buaben 69); Deeney, Garner.

Subs not used: Bond, Dickinson, Yeates, Iwelumo.

Barnsley: Wiseman, Edwards, Foster, McNulty (Doyle 68); Perkins, Smith, Tonge (Golbourne 57); Davies, Done (Dagnall HT); Gray.

Subs not used: Preece, Hassell.

Referee: Roger East.

Attendance: 11, 306 (522).

Totally dominated for first hour by pushing up well. Deserved win but dropped off them in last half hour and gave away an unecessary goal. Another good game from Alex & Sean - definitely need a striker though to fully benefit from all the posession we are now having.

3 tough games in 8 days took their toll on a couple of players. Troy was completely knackered with 15 mins to go and finished up playing in defence.
Murray continues to look an exciting prospect and Hodson had his best game of the season. Barnsley are no mugs and Watford closed them down extremely well for the first 80 mins and then backed of too much for the last 10. On the whole a very good , hard working performance and worthy of 3 points.

well chuffed. 12 points from relegation zone now. 6 points from 6 since Sordell left and 4 goals. Well done boys, keep it up, big game next weekend. On another note, I wonder if Marvin enjoyed trying to keep that bench warm today?! All in all a good day - Whichelow scored on Wycombe debut and Malkay McKay got stuffed at home too with a little help from a certain Kevin Phillips.

God, that was cold! Scrappy game, but dyche obviously had a plan. Barnsley passed it about OK but with no threat at all. Garner flailing about a bit worrying (clean missed a couple of shots) but whole team worked hard - a well earned 3 points. Bring on the Florists (whose owner has just been found dead)

More comfortable than the scoreline suggests..

Barnsley did manage to score with their only real effort on goal after we'd been pretty solid throughout without excelling.

Good goals by Eustace and he worked well with Hogg.

Deeney was decent up front but Garner had a tough time on his own once we made the change to take Alex K off.

Three points well ground out as far as I'm concerned and it's just a shame we were hanging on a bit at the end. I think that other teams see Mapps and Nos in form and think they need to target the smallest defender but Hodson stood up well against their big number 9, got him wound up a bit and even had a few attacking runs himself.
A good team effort all round on a bobbly pitch on a 'fresh' day.
Well done Boys!
Feeling just returned to toes!

Excellent shift all round. Garner got better in the second half although he doesn't look like a goalscorer. Hogg is superb and seems to have a better understanding now with Eustace which is ideal. Nosworthy never puts a foot wrong and always looks for a pass- it's a miracle we got him really. They fully deserve our respect because they work so hard and there seems to be a great spirit. Well done Sean Dyche, stick with your principles and you'll not go far wrong. Four or five more wins and we'll be comfortable.

I doubt we'll even need 4 or 5 wins to be safe now. The bottom 3 will struggle to get 40 points, based on their results so far. Let's hope we now see some signs of improvement off the pitch, with the red lion, a new Harrys bar and the SW corner all finished for the start of what will hopefully be a more optimistic outlook next season. Still seem to cruise ahead then defend deeply, that puts pressure on ourselves
But with what Dyche has at his disposal and the prospect of losing any decent talent that he 'nurtures' you have to take your hat off to him

John Eustace has been my favourite player for the past few seasons but I thought that he looked as if he was struggling a bit at the start of the season. However for the last few games he's been back to his awsome best, he was outstanding today. It's great to see Hogg and Eustace looking so strong in the centre of midfield it's just a shame that this means that there is no starting place for Prince Buaben who I think is also a really good player and great to watch. Still it's great to have such good cover. Well done SD you're doing great with limited resources.

Still worried where the goals are going to come from, front two ran their socks off but neither has the killer touch in front of goal.
Its a sorry indictment of what's available on the bench that Dyche kept Deeney on for the last 15 minutes when he was treading water..nothing left to give. Sorry Sean,I appreciate all that talk of not necessarily looking to bring in a striker was intended to boost the confidence of the lads we have got already. But once that loan window opens go out and get us a goal scorer...we won't always be saved by Captain John.

Sorry, but what we had on the bench had more potential than what was left on the pitch. Once we went 2-0 up, he should have given Yeats a run out and rested Murray - his third senior game in a week. And surely a fresh Iwelumo is better than a centre forward who, as you say, had clearly given his all.

As well as sharing the load, rotating the squad gives the players who come off the bench the chance to show the manager how wrong he was not to give them a start.

Buabin was bright, but the forward threat virtually disappeared, and invited the Barnsley revival. They didn't deserve a draw, but we nearly handed them one.

Just look at how weak our bench was today you appointed Dyche he has done well to keep our/your club competitive SO BACK HIM NOW !

I have to say I disagree with your comment about us having a weak bench. We had Buaben who has been impressive albeit a little inconsistent, Yeates who has been a decent signing and is 3rd in the list for Championship Players assists in the current season and Dickinson who has done a decent job for the first half of the season at left back. I think thats the strongest bench we've had for some time to be honest. However I agree we need to delve into the loan market and need someone like HH to provide some aerial presence/physicality up front along with some reliable finishing.

Good hard worked performance today. I am one of SD's fans however i thought that his change of tactics with the substitution was a bit "school boy". Barnsley clearly liked playing the ball along their back 4 waiting for an opening to appear. When the new lad went off and biscuit came on we went 4-5-1 and only had one up top closing the defence. This helped their game and they could pick and chose their passes alot easier. Anyway, we dug in well, remained resolute and got 3 points on a freezing day. COYH

Credit to SD he has lost what looked like all our top players and we despite being certs for relegation are looking more than comfortable in this division. The team spirit is there for all to see and with the mentality of hard work pays off we wont go far wrong . Lets start looking upwards rather than down and see if we can get near last seasons points tally. If we get within 5 points SD for me will be manager of the season in that league. Red lion looks as though it will take another 5 years and the stadium work is never going to happen under asset stripping Bas but with SD in charge we may still have a team to cheer on. Apparently HH is not available ...

"QPR boss Mark Hughes says Heidar Helguson is still likely to play an important role despite the big-money signings of Bobby Zamora and Djibril Cisse.

Veteran forward Helguson is Rangers’ top scorer this season with nine goals but faces stiff competition for his place and is also managing on ongoing groin problem. Hughes, though, insists the Icelander is still very much part of his first-team plans.

He said: “Heidar’s injured at the moment so he’s not available, but when he’s fit he’ll come into the equation. We’ll need a different skills-set against different opposition.

Well done lads you ground out the three points, first half quite comfortable but a bit nervy towards the end but a win is a win and it made my journey home to Birmingham a very happy one, same again against Forest please.
Keep up the good work Shaun.

Why do people keep on about HH he is injured hence his exclusion from Hughes squad
And as The pikeys top scorer why would they send him here?
And anyone who still thinks Ilewumo is an option are above daft.

Not the greatest of games and certainly one of the coldest! 3 points though and thouroughly deserved. If I had to be picky we let them score near the end and although they never looked like getting another we have a history this season of shooting ourselves in the foot. Still not sure why Doyley is at left back for a game when the opposition didn't have any pacy wingers. I understood why he played against Spurs but for a standard game game Dickinson should be there. We looked a little bit tired towards the end which considering how much effort was put in against Spurs and a difficult game against Millwall it's not surprising! A center forward is a must though as we only have 3 and one of those is Big Chris who I guess we'll let go at the end of the season. A win at Forest next Saturday and I reckon we'll be nearly there as it looks likely that we won't need anywhere need 50 points this year as the bottom 3 already look doomed. Play offs is probably a step too far but it would be nice to finish higher than last year which considering who has left would be a fantastic achievement.
Well done SD and the boys
