Hornets earn Forest point

By Anthony Matthews »

Watford will be the happier of the two sides this evening after they added another point to their tally with a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest.

The visitors never really got into their stride in a game low on quality but they secured a point thanks to Troy Deeney’s header in the last minute of the first half after Gareth McCleary had remarkably scored Forest’s first goal at the City Ground in eight matches to put Steve Cotterill’s strugglers ahead.

Although John Eustace hit the crossbar after the break, Forest spurned several decent opportunities to have picked up only their second league win in 12 outings.

Chris Gunter also hit the bar, when he really should have scored, in the second half and fired another clear opening over the top, while Ishmael Miller spurned a great opportunity to double the hosts’ advantage in the first half, only to shoot straight at Scott Loach.

With no fresh injury concern, there was no surprise that Sean Dyche named an unchanged team for the third match running as his side went in search of a third straight win.

By contrast, the Forest line-up showed five changes from their last game at the end of January after last Sunday’s trip to Derby County was postponed – and it was a team that included three debutants in loan signings Scott Wootton, Danny Higginbotham and George Elokobi.

Following a minute’s applause in tribute to Forest owner Nigel Doughty, who died last Saturday at the age of 54, the Hornets started positively, retaining possession well. But it soon began to go downhill for them in the first half.

It was the hosts who had the first sniff of an opening in the fourth minute when, following an inswinging free-kick from the left, Nyron Nosworthy was forced to head behind his own goal and concede a corner. Higginbotham then fired another free-kick into the Hornets’ wall before Deeney had the visitors’ first effort of the game, hitting a shot on the turn wide from the edge of the area.

Lloyd Doyley was rather harshly awarded the game’s first yellow card in the 13th minute for a foul on Chris Gunter on the right edge of the 18-yard box and from Adlene Guedioura’s resultant set piece, Luke Chambers headed down towards goal but his effort lacked power and Loach was able to save.

The hosts continued to apply the pressure, with Marlon Harewood having a shot blocked before the ball cannoned back out to Higginbotham, who fired over the top from around 20 yards out.

But in the 18th minute came a moment the majority inside the City Ground have waited for since November 19 – a goal for their team at home.

There didn’t appear to be any immediate danger when McCleary picked up the ball on the left and cut inside before hitting a right-footed 20-yard effort that deceived Loach and finished up in his bottom left-hand corner, ending Forest’s seven-match goal famine in front of their own fans. However, the fact the Watford keeper dived late suggested the shot took a deflection, although that was not immediately apparent from the side of the pitch.

One almost became two soon after when Gunter was played in on the right side of the area and he lifted the ball wide of the advancing Loach, but the effort was going wide before the Hornets managed to clear their lines.

However, the visitors were clearly rattled and should have been 2-0 down moments later when Miller was put clear on the left side of the area but he fired straight at Loach.

Instead of being in big trouble, Watford very nearly levelled in the 22nd minute when Sean Murray drifted in a free-kick from right of centre and Eustace got in a clear header, only for the sprawling Lee Camp to keep it out.

McCleary was clearly in the mood following his goal and chanced his arm with another right-footed shot from outside the area in the 29th minute. This was again well struck but this time Loach was able to save, albeit at the second attempt.

The Hornets began to enjoy more possession as the first half drew to a close, without threatening too much, although that almost changed in the 41st minute when Murray latched onto the ball on the right and attacked Higginbotham before getting the break of the ball and stabbing a shot wide of the near post.

But three minutes later, Watford were level.

It initially looked like referee Jon Moss might not have done the Hornets any favours when he pulled back play for a foul on Joe Garner as Alex Kacaniklic seemingly looked set to cross from the left. However, Murray took a superbly flighted set piece from close to the left touchline and Deeney got up first with a back header that was out of the reach of Camp to make it 1-1 at the break.

Miller had the first attempt of the second half blocked by Nosworthy in what was a stretched resumption to play that featured a second booking for the visitors after Jonathan Hogg was cautioned for a foul on Gunter.

Harewood dragged a 25-yard attempt from a free-kick wide of Loach’s right-hand post before Nosworthy joined the Hornets’ yellow card contingent for going through the back of Miller.

But the Hornets survived a massive let off in the 58th minute when Steve Cotterill’s side really should have retaken the lead.

Harewood was the creator with a fine cross from the left that picked out Gunter on his own at the far post but the right-sided midfielder, if anything, caught his volley too cleanly and his effort cannoned back off the crossbar.

Gunter had another chance soon after following a cross from McCleary, who, not for the first time in the match, had beaten Lee Hodson for pace, but this time the full-back by trade put his effort too close to Loach.

Kacaniklic, who had struggled to make an impact, made way for Mark Yeates after 62 minutes and the substitute’s first involvement was to strike a corner that Adrian Mariappa flicked goalwards but Camp was able to gather safely.

Gunter became the first Forest player to be booked in the 66th minute after catching Hodson late before Murray made way for Chris Iwelumo, either side of a fourth booking for the visitors, this time after Joe Garner had fouled Gunter.

The Forest man had his latest attempt soon after, heading over a McCleary cross from the left, but then it was Watford’s turn to hit the woodwork.

Deeney did well on the left to get over a low cross and Eustace arrived late on the edge of the six-yard box to connect with a rising left-footed effort that caught the top of Camp’s bar before going over.

Miller’s last meaningful involvement was to get booked for a foul on Doyley before he made way for Robbie Findley. But then Gunter spurned another glorious opportunity, firing badly over from a central position after another good cross from McCleary had found him in space.

Dexter Blackstock came on for Harewood with ten minutes remaining and then Wootton made way for Andy Reid after Deeney had fired a speculative attempt high over the target.

But Forest blew a good chance to win the game in the first minute of injury time when a good pass from Reid released Findley but his touch was heavy and Loach was able to gather safely.

Nottingham Forest: Camp; Wootton (Reid 87), Chambers, Higginbotham, Elokobi; Gunter, Moussi, Guedioura; Harewood (Blackstock 80), Miller (Findley 75). Not used: Smith and Lynch.

Good point but whatever way you look at it Liability Loach let another softie in! Simple shot not dealt with so it should have been 1 nil ! Even Dyche has said it was a mistake! Got to drop this clown and sack the Gk clown coach!

Good away point that we didn't deserve against one of our bogey teams. Would have liked to see the creativity of Prince replace the effort of Garner. I think they were more fragile at the back than we made them look, if only we could have found the telling pass.

I was at the game today. The report above is pretty accurate to be honest. I thought we looked poor at the start of the first half but got stronger as the game went on, barring a poor spell at the start of the second half and a bit at the end. Hodson was roasted a few times when he was run at with pace, but when he got tight to his man he did OK. From where I sat, Loach didnt really look to blame for the goal. The Forest player shouldnt have been allowed to cut inside and get a clean shot away; it was poor defending IMO. Loach made a couple of cracking stops shortly after as well to keep us in it, but looked a bit nervous at times - especially letting a Forest player partially block a clearance from a routine back pass... The central midfield looked strong and generally composed, but our wide men didnt get involved enough for me. Doyley got forward a lot in support, but as usual seemed to get more nervous the nearer he was to the opposition box ! The central defence pairing was pretty tight, as in recent games and it was great to see everyone throwing themselves in front of the ball when it was in a dangerous position - solid stuff !
Also worth noting that (IMO) Chris Iwelumo made a big difference when he came on. Im not his biggest fan, but he held the ball up well which is what we needed at that point. My only criticism is that I would like to see him use his strength and try and turn his man in the box - the opportunity to win a penalty was there with the central defender all over him.
As for Forest - I thought they played the ball around very well and certainly were a lot calmer on the ball. They had a few golden opportunities to score - especially the one on one at the end. It was a heavy touch by the Forest player, but Loach came out well to collect.
Pleased with a point away from home - doesnt do Forest any favours thats the main thing. By the way - what was with the ref - Im not sure any of the cards were deserved (Forests second also looked pretty innocuous). I agree with the previous poster that it doesnt seem like we will need 50 points this year. Im willing to guess 46 will see us safe.

Good game today either side could have won it. I was sat directly behind the goal and I'm sorry but there's no way Loach could have saved that it moved a mile. I'd take a point but I'm disappointed with Kasanitlic. Great handball banter too. Big Chris did a job today too.

And to rest him for Tuesday. Which is why I would have liked to have seen us use all three subs.

Seen the goal and from the angle I saw it, I dont think Loach had much chance to stop it as it looks like a deflection. Lets not slate the keeper until we see it properly and see if he has made a mistake.

Buckler- I've one of Scotts harshest critics over the past couple of seasons but being directly in line with the shot- Scott had it covered but the ball ( bit like a world cup one) swerved at the last minute giving hm no chance. I had a better view than Dyche! Did well to get a draw - At least Atwell only made a big mistake not a catalogue of astounding decisions- every watford foul = yellow card , two out of three Forest fouls-give free kick to Forest????. Only book Forest players as an absolute last resort. All in all the players didn't play as well as of late but a decent result all the same.

At first sight I thought Loach was at fault, but the ball did appear to swerve a fair bit. Made up for it with a couple of good saves afterwards.

Referee was poor today; how Miller got away with elbows, hands in face all the time. However he is a right handful and we did well to keep him shackled.

Amazed at how many clear cut chances Forest had; Doyley and Hodson seemed to be pulled out of position a number of times.

And to be fair to Iwelumo, he was left as the front man and won a number of flick ons, and a couple of important free kicks when we were under pressure.

Left the game happy with a point.

Stewards - what was there problem? Obviously we have a reputation for being hard core trouble makers, but they just seemed to overreact to everything. Its ok for Forest fans to stand up all game, but not the away fans. Double standards

Buckler you're a complete idiot.

Anway, great result and well done Deeney for notching again. One more win with others losing (i.e 15 point gap) and we can start blooding more youngsters when they return from loan without risking our status.

This is proving to be a seriously good performance from Dyche and the squad.

I'm delighted with where we are in the table. On our budget, with our crowds, not to mention fighting against the likes of Buckler - who is one of a growing number of our 'fans' who seem to think they are there to criticise not support, and will not ever help our players which as far as I'm concerned is our job, 12th man and all that - they are all to be congratulated.

Who cares whether the keeping was international standard - we aren't and Loach is our man for this season. Anyone who has ever played football at any level knows that when you are praised, encouraged and given support you play at the top of your game. Seriously, don't you think if we were behind the guy he'd play better? He's not a robot. He must be cr4pping himself every time he goes out. Granted, I have never thought he's Spurs material and he's made some howlers this season, but he's good enough - on form - for us. The way I see it, it's partly our job to get him back to form. Thats what this hobby of 'supporting' your team is all about.

Overall, keep it going boys top work!

hey Jimbuctu, another night owl here; I agree with you, Scott is human like the rest of us and from his body language and general demeanour,I think he can be a bit fragile at times. The psychological strain of having back biting n'er do wells like Buckler et al nagging away in his ear is bound to take its toll on his confidence. yes, he's a professional footballer, paid a lot of money but he's also human and needs to be encouraged and given some plaudits - I can remember only a few seasons ago he was seen as the best thing since sliced bread; his skills are still there but goalkeepers need to feel mentally strong to make sure they can instinctively tap in to these skills (and not the ball in to the net!). Remember, what you give out, you'll get back - it's karma man.

Back to the match, a point away is always good and we still remain a healthy 12 points above the drop.

whether more loan players arrive or not, whether the ownership changes or not, we have to be happy with the results so far thanks to the owner manager and teams efforts.

if we survive the season and stay in the division I really believe that even if adrian leaves, we will have the squad plus Tiny, McGinn, Matty and Adam along with a couple of changes we should be ready next year for a top half finish as the next step.

In the meantime if our support would return life could be even better and expect new dressing rooms for 2012/2013.

The future may yet be yellow

here here, I don't want to sound like I lack ambition but I'm happy with "The Watford Way" and proud of our club's league position despite a tough decade where many other clubs of our size and faltered, failed and financially defaulted. The idea of wholesale changes, and "strangers" running the club, team and backroooms worries me. I think SD has done a sterling job and we have a habit of recruiting/developin
g young managers who seem to have a fairly bright future ahead of them.

Claiming that you (and your anti-clapping friends) are more passionate or better supporters than other fellow fans?! unbelieveable behaviour..... how old are you?.... are you 12, or maybe younger? For your sake I do hope so because then that sort of comment is forgiveable, but for any one older that sort of comment is laughable. I dont give a &%£$ if you sing louder than me, or if you go to every away game in every season (if you do, then well done to you and respect for that) but that makes you no bigger or better supporter than anyone else who has WFC in their heart.

How many times do I have to keep telling you ? that I ,uncle Buck, Lutondown etc support "The Hornets" more vehemently and more vocally than you can ever dream of.But we will also ask the questions that need to be asked ! and we do not resort to cheap insults and disrespect like a lot of your comrades do.
On the contrary KeithMercer I fully respect all the opinions on here and enjoy reading them. I've made my point to Buckler a few times about his anger towards anyone who has a different opinion to him - ie calling people clappers for being positive. I wouldn't deny Loach has had a bad season and I wouldn't be against signing a good experienced loan keeper to give him a few months out of the limelight. If we don't though, it won't help to constantly have a dig at Loach.

That's my opinion and there were no cheap insults AT ALL in my post. I was simply calling Buckler an idiot for (yet again) calling someone a 'clapper' for having a different opinion to him. As we all know, there are many, many posts we could refer to where your comments above apply entirely to his posts. I don't agree with the out and out negativity either but that's a matter of opinion and I'm more than happy to 'discuss' those points.

Also, I guess in a way I am prepared to tolerate a certain amount of dross. I've had to be, I've followed Watford all my life and at times the dross has been abundent! It's all part of the fun of it and it means when we are good it feels that much better!

Good point yesterday , against a team that were " putting extra effort in " due to the circumstances of the deceased owner , and some new signings. A physical side , not helped by the fact the referee seemed to be very must a "homer". He was dreadful , and we scored because of his mistake on not allowing an advantage after the foul. Good to see Scott have a really good game...a couple of his saves were out of the top drawer...especially one in the first half where the ball dipped suddendly , and he was able to hold it at the second attempt. For the goal , the ball swerved unbelievably , so was not to blame..the only blame would be from defenders who failed to close the scorer down. In fact our dug out did not realise how much that shot had moved at the time ( I spoke to Alec & Ian afterwards , so if Dyche did say it was a GK error then he was mistaken).WE would see other keepers struggle with long shots , but as we rarely have a go from distance , it probably appears that our keeper makes mistakes from distance. Whens the last time we scored from a drive from 25-30 yards ..WE DON'T. We battled well , and big Chris was immense up front when he came on and gave us some physical nous which we lacked previously. A good point , we rode a little bit of luck , but we don't roll over anymore which is a good sign.

There's no problem with someone having an opinion. But look at yesterday , Deeney misses a sitter and the fans shout (" Deeney , Deeney) ..they score and immediately they were slagging off the goalie ( and it was NOT his fault). Some of the abuse from so called Watford fans ( some running down the isle to personally shout obsceneties at him ) has been disgraceful, and these people are supposed to be "supporting the club".There are a few morons at every club . but with our small and quiet fan base , unfortunately our morons can be heard.

My two pennies worth.

I was right behind the shot and Loach had no chance with it. The goal aside I thought he had a good game.

Hodson and Doyley were atrocious yesterday, the Forest wingers could seemingly put the ball into our area at will. That will always cause us a problem especially playing against two big forwards.

Murray and Kacanlikic will have better games, neither of them really got into it which meant the Forest fullbacks could get forward too often.

Iwelumo looked good when he came on and gave us some much needed stature up front.

Yeates looks like he's in a sulk because he's been dropped. Looking at his body language yesterday really hacked me off.

Is it any wonder that the middle classes have lost all respect for the Police service when a semi-literate dullard like Corbyn can rise to the rank of Inspector

Mr Down, is being a keyboard bully worse than wanting to meet up to 'iron out' your differences?

First of all please call me Luton, no need to go all formal on me!
I think there are a lot of sanctimonious fools on this site that think we have all to agree. I'd be the first to admit if I was wrong and would agree that Dyche has done well with his resources but still dislike the style.
I don't know about Bas as I still see nothing tangible as to what's happening, and I would bet my bottom dollar if here was a bid for the club he'd take it ( why wouldn't he as he's a self proclaimed businessman first and foremost)
I would Imagine that if the noise of the wise monkeys on this site was transferred in to the stadium we would be a vociferous bunch. There is a lot of ganging up on here, and I for one resent and would react to anyone insulting me on here or to my face.
Banter is fine, crossing the line isn't.
One thing to add to all old timers Corbysweenyplod is really PC48 and he still hasn't returned the laces to my DMs

Is it any wonder when people like you make statements that are trash to try and garner credibility, but in reality make you look even more pathetic, as are the majority of your posts!

good observations, we are back to square one with our left/right backs, hodson for me is still poor he cannot stop a cross from being delivered, i don`t care about him going forward his main job is to defend and his marking and closing down is not good enough.doyley at left back?, sorry, over qualified, two left feet!

I think/hope this is a one off. Hodson has been one of our better players this season. He really looks to have shaken off the issues he had last year but he's only a youngster so will be prone to games like yesterday.

Doyley has also looked good since he came in for the hapless Dickinson but he's not the answer at full back. Great squad player though.
