CHILDREN at an Edmonton primary school have raised £680 for the Haiti Earthquake Appeal.
The pupils from Houndsfield Primary School, in Ripon Road, organised a bring-and-buy sale and a casual clothes day on January 22.
Headteacher Andrea Nutter said: “There are some news stories that affect us all.
"Many children attending this school were really concerned and wanted to do something to help.
“Because the local community is so supportive, we planned the sale very quickly and the children showed a great deal of enthusiasm for it.
"We are very proud of them and all the local support that we had for this appeal.”
The school’s Year 6 pupils, aged 11, took charge of selling toys, games, books and cakes.
Councillor Glynis Vince, cabinet member for education, children’s services and youth, congratulated the youngsters.
She said: “Well done Houndsfield. This is a great example and shows that education is not just about learning based on the curriculum, but also about being in tune with events like this and responding with compassion and generosity.”
Neil Rousell, co-director, education, children’s services and leisure added: “This was a wonderful and constructive response from the school.
"Many children will have seen disturbing images on TV and this school event will have been very helpful, both to them and the children in Haiti.”
