Bolton Wanderers signing Marvin Sordell thanks Watford on Twitter

Marvin Sordell has taken to Twitter this lunchtime to issue a lengthy thank you after completing his move to Bolton Wanderers.

The former Watford striker has used the social networking site to praise the club, manager Sean Dyche and the fans following his deadline day switch to the Premier League outfit for a fee that we understand could rise to more than £3.5m.

The England Under-21 forward had looked set to link up again with former Hornets boss Malky Mackay at Cardiff City before Bolton tabled an increased offer.

Sordell Tweeted: “Thank you everybody for the kind messages. Sad to be leaving Watford but it’s a new chapter in my career that I’m delighted to be starting.

“I loved every minute at the club and will never have a bad word to say about anybody there.

“I’d like to thank everybody at the club and in particular the manager, Sean Dyche, for guiding and helping me to improve as a player and a person.

“I wish the club all the best for the future.

“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to play for Bolton in the Premiership and I can’t wait to get started now.

“And I’d also like to thank the fans for all the support I’ve had over the years. You’ve been great to me and I loved scoring goals for you.”

All the best Marv, hope you follow Danny Graham's lead and settle into the Prem nicely.

Well done Marvin, hope everything goes really well for you.
Nice also to see that the lad has shown he has better manners than Malky who didn't take the time to thank everyone at Watord----oh sorry I forgot his contract terms wouldn't allow him to do so.
Well done Marv so pleased you didn't go to Cardiff!!

Marv did well for us and whenever a team in the league above comes in for our players, fans have got to understand that the step up is the chance players have been waiting for for (i see moving to a team in the same division very differently).
Good luck to Marv, always thought he had a bit of quality and I think he'll go on to do well.
Bit disappointed we didn't get more for him but maybe we have included add-on and sell-on clauses that will make the figure look more reasonable in the future.
Last night's result and the performance against tottenham were very encouraging, not least from a defence point of view so let's hope we can keep it up.
Very happy maps has stayed, he seems to be a great professional which a lot of fans would do well to remember if and when his performance drops slightly.
For now, keep doyley at left back (our best option there currently), keep the positive momentum going with a couple of attacking signings on loan (that window is still open, right?) and we should be able to pick up a few more points during feb.

Alex, I've read in several places the Zaha bid was initially around the £3m mark with add-ons and sell-on fees making it a potentially maximum total of approximately £7m.
Maybe £3m was too cheap for Sordell but we're a club still losing plenty of money so it's not to be sniffed at.

As for Sordell himself, I've loved watching him play for us and only wish him the best for the future. He'll always be welcome back at the Vic.

You are wrong.

For Championship and League clubs (excluding Premiership clubs) the loan transfer window opens from 8 February until 24 March so we could sign loan players until the end of the season in this window. Also youth loans up to a maximum of three months can be done at any time I believe.

Very best of Luck Marvin.

He was on my table with Danny Graham at a sponsors evening last year and when I shook his hand and told him how well he was playing and how good he was looking to become, he said he had a long way to go and was very humble and unassuming.

Well done Marvin, should you ever return to Watford whilst you're with Bolton I'm sure you'll be given a very warm reception, now enjoy the Prem, push on and make playing for the full England team your next target.

Thought his head had been turned since his U21 call up. Whether it is too much or too little is yet to be determined unless anybody knows what the future add ons are? As far as I am aware the details are ‘undisclosed’ so I guess everything is speculation except for the fact Bolton put in an offer which was in excess of Cardiff’s £3M.

I dont blame Marv for wanting to step up but I do worry where the next moment of magic that conjours a goal out of nothing is going to come from. Not from Troy or Joe I fear though I know they wont be found lacking in the effort department. Without MS and MK we are going to have to grind out the results that will keep us up.
I also feel a bit cheated...we have only seen flashes of the player MS could become. At least with the likes of Barnes and Ashley Young we had a couple of seasons to enjoy their talent before bowing to the power of the chequebook.

OWNER Laurence Bassini was left feeling as though Watford had little option but to agree to Marvin Sordell's transfer on January 2012 deadline day - and is keen explain why to Hornets' fans.

"Unfortunately, you cannot protect your own players from external and third-party influences when it comes to what might be best for their future career," said Bassini.

"We made an offer to double Marvin's wages, however his agent advised that this wouldn't be considered and that they'd simply let his contract run down.

"Then we'd have been in a vulnerable position as regards compensation amounts - so it becomes more about doing what's best for Watford FC at that exact moment.

"I discussed the matter with Graham Taylor and we agreed that selling Marvin was in the best interests of the football club, given the circumstances.

"It was a tough decision, because Marvin may well have gone on to further his transfer value with plenty more goals from now until May, but we didn't feel we could risk being in a contractually weaker state come the summer.

"We also had approaches from other clubs, including Cardiff City. Given what has happened in the two clubs' recent history, the chances of striking a deal there were remote, to say the least."

Marvin Sordell - now a Bolton Wanderers player

However, given all that happened yesterday, Bassini has nothing but praise for the 20-year-old striker.

"Marvin is a terrific young man who may well have a very good career ahead of him. We still have a financial stake in that future success so we'll all be tracking his progress with interest.

"Who could deny a young player his chance of a shot at the Premier League? Everyone at Watford Football Club wishes him well for his new challenge at Bolton Wanderers."

Disagree with Baz. I think we would of commanded at least £2.5m at tribunal if Marvin had of let his contract run down which isn't at all bad considering the importance of the goals he could have scored in the meantime. Don't think Baz thought this one through enough and player/agent power dictated and we got a fee at the bottom end of what most of us thought.

HertsPeter says...
9:50am Thu 2 Feb 12

Fair play to Sordell or his people for taking the trouble to post the message. It's not a big deal to show a little courtesy + class, yet it stands out in an industry where such qualities are in very short supply.

As for Bassini, I'm not an apologist for him per se - however I don't know what so called fans are expecting. Save for 5 or 6 clubs in the whole of Europe, all clubs are selling clubs. If another Sordell emerges at WFC in the next 12-24 months, the same thing will happen. And it would also happen at almost any other club!!

corbindallas says...
10:33am Thu 2 Feb 12

As Bassini states they offered to double his salary and they (Marvin and his Agent) would not consider it, then selling him now is shrewd business, let's face some facts again, he is raw talent and in 5 years time he may be a excellent striker but he as said is still developing now, he blow's hot and cold and by moving him on now we have money for the clubs running and we have a vacancy for another talent to emerge. I will be interested to see how often he is a first team player at Bolton, he will have to hit the ground running as we know he can blow hot and cold, which Prem clubs cannot afford to carry! Also intresting to read Bassini state that Cardiff made a offer but it was never going to happen with the recent history!

Well someone is telling porkies as MM and his cardiff crew say watford agreed the deal at 3m with them , they spoke to both sordell and his agent only for half an hour later Bolton came in , cardiff would not increase there offer so he went to Bolton

so anyone thinking we would not have sold to cardiff is bonkers we got lucky bolton came in for him at the death and please don't think we would not have sold Marriappa either if we could have got him to go to wigan

dark days ahead everybody as i keep telling you please do not fall for this drivel spouted by our owner and GT if you are associating yourself with this article then shame on you !!!

funny the deal was agreed just as the window closes and dyche cannot spend any of it !

FROM WALESONLINE

CARDIFF City lost out on a dramatic £3million bid to bring Watford striker Marvin Sordell to south Wales, with Premier League Bolton moving in at the 11th hour to gazump their offer.

Bluebirds boss Malky Mackay made the swoop for the highly-rated Sordell just minutes ahead of last night’s well-earned 1-1 draw with Southampton.

Front-man Sordell seemed certain to be on his way to the Bluebirds on the final day of the transfer window when Watford appeared to accept City’s huge bid.

The Echo understands City were able to speak to the player and his agent, but Bolton were then said to have moved in with a bigger offer for Sordell.

The Bluebirds would not increase their bid and eventually time ran out on the potential deal.

City manager Mackay also made a bid of £1.2m for Brighton winger Craig Noone, a fee which would have risen to £1.5m with extras.

In the end though, City were unable to strengthen their squad and will wait until the loan window opens in a week to look at other options.

The Bluebirds earned their 1-1 draw against promotion rivals Southampton, while Mackay and his backroom team were also chasing hard to strengthen the squad.

“We had a bid accepted for one player and than half an hour after things changed,” said Mackay.

“It’s strange that we have this night when football matches are going on. It’s crazy, incredibly strange.”

Don't see that Cliff
I've nothing against the club except being Welsh and very anti English
But on everything that has gone on there have been two differing statements, both wide of each other.
So we hope Bas is telling the truth, but as with all things there are always two sides to events,
Sordell was going so are we saying no way we sell him to Cardiff, or if another bidder comes in we give them priority?
Two different ideals.
I agree with Big Thunder that if Csrdiff had been the only ones with the acceptable bid, we would have shaken the Devils hand.
It will be interesting to see how much of this is reinvested on the ground and players.
Hope the loan window brings something our way
I await the clapping down

Also regardless it would be foolish to rule out any club making bids, how about my statement on the deal, Watford appeared not to accept City's bid as it was not huge enough! Also only a fool would take into account newspaper claims as a sole reliable source. MM will have to say he tried his hardest (but failed) to bring in players wouldn't he! At least Bassini has come out to clarify it and I for one will be siding with our clubs owner on this and not a two faced club like Cardiff!

I know what your view is Corny
Thing is I was reflecting on Cliffs comment.
And I was stating there was two sides to this story,do do not feel the need to re-read
I also stated that as much as I hope Bas's slant is the right one, I have no reason to trust one more than the other.
I'm sure that every manager who has left a company is easy picking to blame every ambiguity on.
Now having said that, MacTosh never got Sordell, good but I do also think thank God there were other bidders
Interesting you choose to jump on that comment rather than my more positive and altogether clappier bit on Tommy Smith.
Now Corby, put your Rambo head band on and get typing.

I personally liked Sordell, I think a lot was being asked for such a young player. No decent foil, lack of wide men etc but he did link up well with our improving midfield. 25 goals in a season and half is not Bad at all.

He probably thought he was being quite shrewd coming in at the last minute and I am glad he came unstuck.

Me too Cliff, whether there was intent or not we'll never know but the way MiniMac raped the club that gave him everything I enjoy the fact that not only was he gazzumped, but in trying to tuck Coyle up, the football world will now be alert to what we knew about the notsobrave heart!
