Watford's manager believes Marvin Sordell's exit to Bolton Wanderers is 'a great opportunity for others'

'Sordell's departure is a great opportunity for others' 'Sordell's departure is a great opportunity for others'

Sean Dyche claims Watford may not necessarily sign a direct replacement for Marvin Sordell after Troy Deeney and Joe Garner scored against Millwall.

Sordell was pulled out of the game against the Lions and completed a move to Premier League Bolton Wanderers on transfer deadline day.

The Hornets instantly adapted to life without their top scorer and completed a 2-0 victory of Kenny Jackett’s side.

While Dyche admits it is likely the Hornets will look to bring a player in when the loan market opens, he said it may not be a striker.

The manager said: “We will be looking for a replacement but that is for the squad, not just in the striking department.

“It could be a wide player, it could be a striker. It is fair to say we like the demand of having four centre-forwards and of course we would like to score more goals – that is quite apparent.

“But the other night Troy Deeney and Joe Garner got an extra goal apiece which will do them no harm with their mentality.

“The only thing I would say is that football has a funny way of working out. When things change it is a great opportunity. Sometimes people see it as a problem and others as a challenge but it is a fantastic opportunity for other people to stand up and be counted for themselves, for the team and for the club.”

He continued: “It is not about Marvin now he is gone. It is about the team and players who went out there. I thought they delivered a very good performance in general.

“That is what we build on. Marvin has gone but he did a great job for this club and earned the club some money. Now it is the about the players moving forward and the possible people that we bring in to reinforce.”

Following his move to Bolton, in a deal which could rise to more than £3.5m, Sordell took to social networking site Twitter to thank everyone at Watford.

He tweeted: “Thank you everybody for the kind messages. Sad to be leaving Watford but it’s a new chapter in my career that I’m delighted to be starting.

“I loved every minute at the club and will never have a bad word to say about anybody there.

“I’d like to thank everybody at the club and in particular the manager, Sean Dyche, for guiding and helping me to improve as a player and a person.

“I wish the club all the best for the future.

“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to play for Bolton in the Premiership and I can’t wait to get started now.

“And I’d also like to thank the fans for all the support I’ve had over the years.

“You’ve been great to me and I loved scoring goals for you.”

Certainly Joe Garner deserves a run, but Troy is all effort and little finish and big Chris is a total waste of space. Tommy Smith might be an acceptable replacement, but otherwise a central striker is vital.

Strange how the offers didn't come flooding in for Loach.

Troy Deeny's finish was top class on Tuesday and Tommy Smith is part of QPR's 25 man squad and wont be going anywhere. Loach also had a decent game on Tuesday

Do people not get bored coming on here and slating Watford players?

We DO need an additional option upfront. The fact that both T&J scored on Tuesday doesn't change this. You can't change transfer strategy on the basis of one match ! Lets get a decent loanee in (Weimann?), start with T&J and if the goals dry up, or one is injured, we have a ready made option on the bench. We really don't want to wait until all the good loanees have gone and end up relying on big Chris to bang in the goals

We do need options up front really. I do find the midfielders and defenders are doing a stern job really.

I do hope that Helguson and Tommy Smith are available as QPR brought in those two strikers on deadline day in Cisse and Zamora. Helguson did well before Warnock got sacked but seem to have missed out on the first team again.

Good Luck against Barnsley lads tomorrow

Careful, you don't want to start sticking up for Watford players. You'll get a load of abuse hurled your way. Something along the lines of wake up, clap off, Loach is a clown and Dyche couldn't manage a sandwich etc.

He is probably just giving the front 2 confidence after scoringon Tuesday..isn't going to come out and say "yes,I am going to get a straight replacement" now.

Its not a case of slating or sticking up for watford players. Its a fact that Troy has played a number of games for us and not scored many, and that until a week ago Joe didn't even make the bench. Its great that both scored on Tuesday, and i hope its the start of a great run in front of goal, but I feel we are exposed relying on just those 2 with only big Chris as back up. We need another option even if we give Joe and Troy first chance to nail down their places.

You'd be waiting forever then Mr notsothin
We will miss Sordell as we've no natural finisher.
One thing I do like Troys commitment, you can ask no more
Garner? Let's see
Ilewumo, roll on independence then we can send him back with all their dodgy politicians

Lets persevere with what we have got as SD has stated and see what develops. Look, what likeable arry knap said: If we play like that we, should be top of the shop! Start believing you neg punts and give what we have a chance. I predict tomorrow 3 points.
Looking forward to tomorrow. Its more exciting than the second half of last season when, MM nearly took us down!

I would love to see Massey come back and prove himself i think the boy has some real class about him and no doubt will be one of the next young watford stars we end up selling for way under his value!

Come on you horns! another must win game today and if we do will help drag Barnsley down into the relegation mix

i am going for 3 -1 watford with troy getting one and Murrey the other 2!

Where are the goals coming from then sean?.Troy is so consistent he even dedicated a goal to his grandad who had died a year earlier because it took him so long to score.Forgive me for saying that but it is a fact.Ican't fault the lads effort but as a goalscorer NO.Garner i doubt very much it would have been harder to miss his one on tues.Ido wish the two all the best and they do get a run but as for a 20 odd goal partnership i doubt very very much.Striker urgent and i won't even mention the one sitting on the bench.

If you can't put the ball in the back of the net then you don't win games.

By all means lets give T&J a chance but we do need to address this in the loan market. However, I would be just as happy to see some of the kids we keep packing off on loans given a crack at it!

This seems to be paying dividends at palace currently who were on the brink not that long ago?
