Katie Rowson believes the Women’s Super League bosses have done all they can to make the fixture list work – but would like to see if improvements can be made.

The Watford Ladies head coach’s side scored twice late on to draw 2-2 at London Bees on Wednesday before seeing yesterday’s clash at home against Yeovil Town Ladies called off because of a waterlogged Berkhamsted pitch.

They now face a four week lay-off, with the Golden Girls’ next fixture not coming until April 24 at Everton in WSL2.

There has been criticism sbout the structure of the season, but although Rowson felt more needs to be considered when organising fixtures, she also thinks the powers-that-be have done everything they can to help teams.

“Obviously, there must be a reason for it and I don’t know the reason why it seems so sporadic, but we have to trust the league,” said Rowson, who became Watford’s head coach in February.

“I think what needs to happen is they need to take into consideration the pressure it puts on resources and costings for clubs like us.

“I worked out to keep the momentum going over the season and people match fit, we’d have to organise 13 friendlies.

“When you look at the amount of resources, time and money that will take, that is a huge factor.

“We are not a Manchester City or a Chelsea, but even for them it would be a lot of resources.

“But we are trying to make the best of it, but we do have to put our trust in the league.

“If it can be improved to help us, then brilliant, but if not, then we’ll work to what we have.”

Rowson added the club are in the process of organising some friendlies to help keep the players match fit.

Following the uplifting finish to their opening league game, which saw Charlotte Kerr score in the 88th minute before Mollie Burgess equalised in the third minute of stoppage time, Rowson was “disappointed” to see the Yeovil game cancelled.

However, she said the attitude of the players has been superb and is confident her team will not stumble out of the blocks when they head to Everton.

Rowson said: “I know I’ve got such a good group of girls. We planned for today’s game and were right on it right until the game got called off.

“But even after that, their first question was ‘what do we do know?’, so the energy and enthusiasm is there to see and that is absolutely fantastic.

“The girls actually killed me in the changing room because I have plans for Easter Monday and the girls were saying ‘why aren’t we training?’.

“The three weeks leading into the Everton game could end up feeling like three months, so it could be hard to keep momentum up, but we’ll have to wait and see.”
