Watford defender Daniel Pudil says 'the whole team need to work, not just the back five'

Daniel Pudil says he was "disappointed" after the Hornets let a two-goal half-time lead slip against Blackpool.

Ikechi Anya and Troy Deeney's goals meant Watford were two up inside 21 minutes at Bloomfield Road on Saturday.

But the visitors were poor in the second half and Isaiah Osbourne equalised with an injury-time goal.

Pudil said: "It was disappointing in the end as we were leading 2-0 at half time against Blackpool, who we knew were a good side.

"Second half Blackpool opened it up. We had to defend, to keep the ball and we couldn’t and they scored two goals."

One player who impressed Pudil was Blackpool's England Under-21 winger Tom Ince. After hitting the bar in the second half, Ince set up Osbourne for the equaliser in injury time.

The Czech Republic international said: "It was difficult for the defenders in the second half, playing against players like Ince. I think he is very good - very young - and I think he could be very good in the future."

Despite the fact the Hornets had a disappointing end to the game, Pudil felt that they played very well in the first half.

"We played very well and I think we should have scored more goals," Pudil commented. "They only had one chance in the first half but we didn’t keep the ball and we made it difficult for ourselves."

He added: "The whole team need to work, not just the back five. If we get it right then we can go further up the league. We didn’t keep the ball today, that was our biggest problem."

Goes to show why we need to kill teams off when we have the chances. Hopefully we can start getting it right against Wednesday, although I always freak out when we play the teams in bad form, their normally the games we drop points. I hope we go and dominate tomorrow.

Danny boy - if you can reduce your bookings to games ratio that would help the team as well.

Daniel makes a good point, its a team game back to front. On may occasions i have mentioned the loss of John Eustace on this forum. I firmly believe most games are won in midfield. All the silky skills most our players seem to have will not compensate the lack of a midfield leader who rules. But many clubs will have problems finding a general to run the game.
I believe it was a good point to gain, young Ince is a real handfull for any side to handle. We are on the right track now, but stress that supporters be patient for Gianfranco is still working out all options. Come January he will have a major task in our squad cull. So in fairness he has to see all team options.

Just a hunch, but I think we will sign a couple of big hitters in January to replace some players who may leave!

Funny, just said very similar on another thread before reading this one, totally agree.

What really changed Saturday's game was the substitutions. With Watford 2-0 up Appleton brought on Gomes in the 28th miniute to strengthen his midfield, followed by another midfielder at half time - Osbourne who scored the equaliser. Watford were already being tested down the wings before half with Crainey and Delfuneso over-running Anya on the right and Pudil being forced back into a traditional full back role on the left. Early in the game, by playing wing backs, Watford were able to play wide across midfield and dominated but as Blackpool strengthened their midfield we were increasingly failing to hold the ball. Anya's substitution by Cassetti in the 60th minute led to us playing 5 across the back having surrendered the midfield. By now Deeney and Vydra were rarely seeing the ball. What was needed was an extra midfielder but instead GFZ's substituted one midfielder with another bringing on Murray for Yeates (who was by his standards having a solid game). With 8 minutes to go, and Watford's 5 man defence under constant pressure, Zola substituted a forward bringing on Forestieri for Vydra. We missed Hogg and Doyley but ultimately the game was decided by the substitutions. Applelton made the right choices; GFZ the wrong ones.
