Gianfranco Zola claims the 4-1 result was unfair on Barnsley but praises second half display

Picture: Holly Cant Picture: Holly Cant

Gianfranco Zola believes the final result was unfair on Barnsley after he watched his Watford side climb to the sixth in the table with a 4-1 victory this afternoon.

Troy Deeney scored twice and there were goals from Mark Yeates and Matej Vydra as the Hornets ran riot at Vicarage Road in the second half.

Zola said: “It’s been a little bit of rock and roll for us today but in the end I’m delighted with the result.”

He continued: “I don’t think that the result is fair on Barnsley though because they played a good game, we probably deserved to win but not in that way.”

Zola was disappointed with his team’s display at the start of the second half.

He said: “Second half we didn’t start very well; they closed us down in our box but the second goal changed things completely. It really killed them and from that moment there was only one team on the pitch.”

On the late Barnsley goal, he added: “It happens that sometimes you make a mistake. To be honest the defence up until then, especially in the second half, played very well.

“It happened to a player who until that moment was outstanding (Joel Ekstrand). I didn’t expect that. As long as you keep the focus when it really matters, mistakes do not matter too much.”

I had a dream ..
It was we finished first .. Hull finished second (my 2 uncles are hull supporters)
Cardiff finish 3rd on goal difference and burnley finish 6th with them having signed Matty witchelow on loan.
Play-off final is Cardiff burnley and in the 90th minuet witchelow scored .. Taking dyche into the premiership leaving Fatty McPie to fight another day

Another great performance from the lads today, comfortable win and getting better each game. If we avoid a points deduction I can see us winning this league. That fat guy in Wales will be looking over his shoulder.

I now look at the forthcoming fixtures and don't see any that I do not think we can turn over.

Next Saturday will be a good opportunity to overtake Hull and cement ourselves in the top six.

Happy days

Agree with GFZ.. Barnsley didn't deserve to ship 4 goals, they are not that bad... However glad they did...
We looked ropey at times, need some midfield steel.. We have now become this amazing attacking team... Missing the holding midfielder...
Troynando... What a great partnership.. Please stay with us for at least another 4 years
You can see the banter amongst the squad on twitter, Troy is a key member of the squad, I wish to apologise as I was one of the 'sack him' brigade... Very pleased we didn't...
Almunia.. Double save... Amazing... Glad I was there to see it...

Great result today, great team effort and we deserved the three points!
The team is playing well with this 3-5-2 formation and a lot of teams will struggle with us!
Our bench was the best it's been all season with Murray, Geijo, Vydra, Mungi Bai and Bottachio on it!
I can't wait till Eustace, Doyley, Neuton, Nosworthy and Bauban are fit.... Wow what a squad we have!

Interested on people's thoughts about Tommie Hoban. I thought he was outstanding today and deserved MotM more than Deeney. Such a cool head on young shoulders.

Yeah Hoban had a great game but so did Ekstrand and Deeney and Almunia had a moment of pure class too!
We have so many good players that are able to turn a game in an instant... Abdi, Vydra, Deeney, Forestieri, Murray, Geijo, and even Yeates and Battochino! Add to this Eustace, Mungi Bai and co and there is no limit to what we can achieve!
This and the fact that we have six defenders: Hall, Hoban, Ekstrand, Neuton, Doyley and Nosworth that can play in a back three of a real top quality defence!
I still think when the missing players return to match fitness (by end Dec) then Belleck, Dickinson, Franchone and Anya will go!

Anya isn't going anywhere in January

Anya will stay. He offers something different, and will be very effective off the bench, or starting against certain teams.

Everyone seems to be getting a little carried away tonight - I guess the same as they do when we lose. But...to tenper the wave of optimism, I thought Yeates was guilty of some awful stuff today, gave the ball away constantly as did Chalobah. If Barnsley had, had anything half decent up front it could have been a very, very different game. Also thought FF didn't have one of his better games today...too busy trying to draw fouls and then sulking when he didn't get one! On the plus side Batocchio looked very good indeed and I still think GFZ HAS to get Vydra in the team. Having said all that we were clinical in frnt of goal andnif we can win 4-1 when we didn;t really play that well...it does bode well. Next week will be a much stiffer test - feet on he ground for now!

GFZ is right but we should have been three up at half time such was our dominance. The only blot on the team was the sulking of FF. He has the talent to be a great player but made it easy for ref to refuse a penalty and generally be unsympathetic. he has to learn to get up and get on with things otherwise his talents will be wasted. I agree with corbinndallas - loving it.

Missed the game due to family wedding...I am hearing good things about the performances from various sources.

At start of the year there were games we done well and got nothing from but now results speak for themselves.

In terms of the crowd figures...not sure what to say really other than what Holly68 has already said...we need your support!

FA Cup draw today...I have said all along, draw us a Premiership team..put WFC on the map and give the team the opportunity to show a wider audience what we are about...especially that Martin Samuel!!!!!

Crowd wasn't helped by poor Barnsley turnout. Could have been at least a thousand more. Thought cassetti was excellent yesterday too. As for forrestieri needs to sulk less and get on with it.
We have such a good team and squad if things continue we will win the league!

Loving the play at the moment, could have scored more...and deserve longer highlights on the football league show! Disgusted they didn't show the penalty appeal, we should be getting extended highlights all season, as we are the entertainers of the league!

Both incidents on hornets world highlights

Brilliant saves by Almunia and strong Barnsley defending, contact but no penalty IMO and not a dive either. Well done the referee.
