Sean Dyche claims Burnley fans would have left Turf Moor “scratching their heads wondering how they didn’t win” against Watford yesterday.

The former Hornets boss believes his team were the better side during the 1-1 draw and created enough chances to win the match.

When asked whether it was a fair result or if he felt hard done by, Dyche replied: “I don’t feel hard done by because that is the reality of football; you can dominate games and create as many chances as we did and not win. That was the obvious view of the game today.”

Watford took the lead through Nathaniel Chalobah in the first half when the Chelsea loanee volleyed past Lee Grant after Burnley were unable to completely clear their box after a Watford corner and subsequent Fitz Hall cross.

Dyche said: “I wasn’t particularly disappointed with their goal because it can happen. We defended the first phase and the second phase and then sometimes it is the third phase [where you are punished].

“I was pleased with the reaction because I thought it was terrific. I thought we had done alright but then after the goal we dominated large parts of the game and I have lost count of the chances we created.”

Burnley equalised when Almen Abdi was penalised for bundling over Dean Marney inside the penalty area and Charlie Austin sent Manuel Almunia the wrong way.

Dyche said: “I have seen it again and it was a penalty. I was disappointed not to have a second penalty in the second half if I am honest, which seems like a clear handball [against Marco Cassetti] – I have had a look and I don’t know how it is not given.

“But I am more interested in our performance because it was very good again. The reality is we need to turn these performances and that number of chances into clinical moments to win the game.

“Yet again we have found another goalkeeper on top form - I lost count of the number of saves he made, he certainly made three or four very good saves.”
