Watford striker Alex Geijo believes Gianfranco Zola's men can reach the play-offs

Alex Geijo believes Gianfranco Zola is the best man to lead Watford as they attempt to secure Premier League football.

Geijo was one of 16 summer signings and ten from Italian club Udinese. The Swiss-born Spanish striker started his fourth game for Watford at the weekend against Burnley as the Hornets secured an away point.

The Hornets faced former manager Sean Dyche at Turf Moor five months after he was controversially sacked but Geijo believes the club made the right decision in appointing Gianfranco Zola in the summer.

"Zola is the best man for the football that we want to play," Geijo said. "The manager loves the ball, he loves playing football and we have players who like to play this type of football.

"I think he is the best [man for the job] and he is close to the players. He tries to help you as much as he can. He is not only a good manager, he is a good person as well."

When the Pozzo family, who also own Udinese and Granada in Spain, took over Watford, they clearly expressed a desire to reach the Premier League. Doing so in the first year was considered a tall order by many but with the Hornets sitting in seventh position and just three points from the play-off positions, securing promotion this season is a realistic possibility.

"We don’t know because it is difficult," Geijo replied when asked about Watford's chances of securing promotion. "The football has changed a lot. We had a good November but we have lost and drawn the last two matches.

"We have the team to think about the play-offs. Now we are seventh but we don’t want to be in the play-offs tomorrow, we need to be there at the end of the Championship season.

"If we continue to play well then I think we can get in the play-offs. It is difficult to say we will make it to the Premier League because there are a lot of good teams, like you saw against Burnley."

Watford underperformed against The Clarets on Saturday and would have been the happier of the two sides leaving with a point.

Gianfranco Zola opted for Troy Deeney and Geijo up front at the weekend; the first time the Italian has selected the partnership.

The move did not reap the benefits Zola was hoping for and when asked whether he thought the partnership could work, Geijo said: "We have a lot of different players. The likes of Matej Vydra and Fernando Forestieri are small and quick.

"I think against Burnley the manager maybe wanted two big boys because they are a big and strong team.

"It was not our best match and it was difficult but we continue and next week it is another match. We only look to the next game."

Watford's goal at the weekend came from Chelsea loanee Nathaniel Chalobah. The 17-year-old had an off day against Burnley and has struggled to maintain the exceptional form he showed earlier this season.

But Geijo said: "He is my friend so I hope he can play in the Champions League for Chelsea one day.

"It is difficult to tell because circumstances change a lot. At the moment it might be going well for you but you never know, you could end up with an injury.

"If he continues to do his job like he did at the start of the season then he is a player who can play in the Premier League for sure.

Chalobah claims he doesn't feel the pressure of highly-rated tag

"He has quality and he is just 17 - it is incredible. It is not like he is 25, he is 17 and is playing very well in the Championship.

"I tell you, if he continues like this, if he is lucky and continues to work, then he will play in the Premier League for sure."

Geijo added: "He is a confident player because he has quality on the ball. This is why I am telling you that he could play in the Premier League at 17. He has a lot of confidence, he has no problem taking the ball and taking responsibility. This player can go to the top."

Boo Endean. I like this article it warms my heart and increases my man love for Zola, Geijo and all the boys.

By the way Dyche eats sautéd slugs with chopped almonds for breakfast. Everyone knows that.

I agree with Endean, this is very much 'filler' of the highest degree. How about an update on our injured lads and what team we are likely to put out against Forrest.
It would also be nice to have an article about the progress of our loanees and how they are doing at their respective clubs. I still have hopes that Wichelow, Mingoia and Hodson could play a part for us one day.
Please no more Yeates bashing, u only serve to embarass yourself by doing so.
Am going to be at the game on saturday, cant wait- I predict a great win for the golden boys!

I can cut and paste too, can I have a job with Watford Observer Sports page? I have some other phrases as well:

ex-Watford loanee
ex-(other team here) striker
former Watford owner Laurence Bassini

Wichelow (I assume he is still there) and Mingoia can't even get a start for Accrington so I can;t see much happening for these boys I'm afraid. Had their chances and not being able to get a start at league 2 level shows the progress that has been made. It's a shame but time to move them on now.

I don;t really see the problem with this article. The WO come in for a lot of stick with some of the articles and I don;t understand it. I enjoyed the article and as this is an online version of the paper it's hardly a page filler. I would rather read and article like this than there be no article at all. I fail to see the problem with it. There are far too many people ready to jump down the throat of the paper. This is surely a positive article about Geijo's aspirations for the season and his admiration for another of our young players even if he is one of Chelsea's. I think sometimes Watford fans are desperate to have a whinge for the sake of it!

You got it Olly. Nothing better to do than bully a young Journo doing his best. Sometimes there is no groundbreaking news and we have to accept this. We have had our fair share this season!

We've had more ground breaking stories in past few months than since the Kevin Affleck days, so a tamer story on one of our new (but quite shy) players is very welcome.

These people knocking Frank need to get real. As if Zola is going to call Frank in and say btw, we are selling him, releasing him, and signing him, you go tell the world First Frankie !!!

With every story it has to be substantiated, and not rumour. So I think we get a very good service from the Wobby

Given the push for promotion, I would rather the club retained its large squad

Billy Jennings! Was a great little player. Our record transfer at the time £100k to WHU? I think!
Ian Bolton, free kicks went two ways, crashing thru back of the net or knocking letters of the Watford Observer sign at top of old Rookery stand. But again what a player.

Is it that common knowledge! Worst kept secret! I do take it we are talking my Half season Ticket!?
Yeah, I would have thought that the amount of games you attend, you would have had a season ticket. more money than sense! I need to get into this gardening game.
Apparently according to my old foe I'm pretty poor at that, but it will really annoy him to know that I'm paid well for my incompetence!
Yep the pay as you go was madness, trouble is I don't know my favourite spot, after all these years.
I think the upper Rous next year. They need a bit if rough up there.
As they say you can take the boy out of the council estate but.....!
You don't have a season ticket? I guess your allowance doesn't cover a Watford season ticket as well as one for your beloved L*ton.
Here we go again
Vialli why do you single LD out on every post? Like a bl**dy stalker!
Hey mate, thanks for you having my back but trust me on this, he's a nothing, so I do not see the point.

That's what I thought! Here we go again.
But you must admit it's very funny.
Normally enjoy the banter, I stick my neck out to receive some, but in this case....I'd like to stick something else out!
Anyway back to more important matters like if my 'allowance' will allow me to have a hot dog on Saturday, and if it stretches to buying you a pint!
Allowance?....if only..!

Memories, looking back and not proud of it but on a Saturday away day, we would walk up from the estate to Robertson's supermarket and ask for a bottle of soccer violence and promptly being presented with a bottle of Old English. That was at least 35 years ago and about 35p for the drink LOL

That's how it was though. Times change, we get older and wiser, well older for sure! Had some great away days back then. Always been a Hornet thick and thin ( you have to be thick!)
Here's some names from those times
Tony Wilson ( Chisler) defected to West Ham with Gary Chandler.
Martin Filer, where did he go? All a bit blurry now but a lots coming back to me.
Guy who posts as Bringe, I used to see him at places like Workington and Darlington.
I've been to some places watching Watford, but really supporting Luton all the time..;-) !

And go here's one from the Garage days. Steve Wharton, Gobby but ok in small doses. He nicked a chip from my plate without asking, so I let him have the whole plate, he always asked nicely after that. Some characters there as well. Remember you holding court in the canteen! Lol. Good days, too long ago

Billy Jennings! Was a great little player. Our record transfer at the time £100k to WHU? I think!
Ian Bolton, free kicks went two ways, crashing thru back of the net or knocking letters of the Watford Observer sign at top of old Rookery stand. But again what a player.
Andy Rankin my favourite goalkeeper.
Anyone else for some good old memories?
Best penalty stopper I ever saw at the Vic. Modest guy.
John Mcllelland. Best CB I ever saw at the Vic.
Too right re JM. Would outpace any striker who took him on, but only ever seemed to be jogging because of his odd running style.
Hoban similar style?

yes definitely. Hopefully the rest of his game will develop in line with the great JM and he'll go on to have as great a career.

Jennings is the best header of the ball I have seen at Vicarage Road - despite his lack of height he could out jump most defenders and just hung in the air for an age, head and shoulders above everyone else. Even with his feet he scored with ease despite rarely striking the ball cleanly. Went to West Ham and did OK.
