Adam Thompson in Gianfranco Zola's plans but 'a little bit' frustrated at not being involved in Watford squad

Adam Thompson admits not being involved in Watford’s first team squad "is a little bit frustrating" but Gianfranco Zola has told the defender he is part of his plans in the future.

The 20-year-old joined League Two side Barnet on loan last Friday; his second temporary move away from Vicarage Road this season after previously spending a month at Wycombe Wanderers.

Thompson has made three appearances for the Hornets under Zola but when asked if not being regularly involved in the first team squad was frustrating, he replied: "It is a little bit frustrating but the manager has let me know that I am part of his plans and hopefully I push on next season.

"At this stage I need to be playing games and getting experience. If I can play games at League Two level, men’s football, then maybe the manager can trust me a little bit more in the games."

Thompson made his Hornets debut in the 2010/2011 season under Malky Mackay and went on to make 13 appearances in all competitions.

After spending a large part of the last campaign on loan at League One outfit Brentford, Thompson returned to a much changed Vicarage Road following the takeover by the Pozzos.

With a total of 16 new players brought into the club during the summer, which included a host of defenders, Thompson has once again left on loan in search of regular first team football.

During his time at Underhill, the Northern Ireland international will be managed by former Juventus and Netherlands star Edgar Davids.

The defender admits working with the likes of Davids and Zola can only improve his game.

He said: "They are two legends and you have more respect for them I think. They have been there and done it at an unbelievable standard.

"They are both internationals, so you can only learn by working with them."

He'll really flourish as a wing back - and Cassetti isn't getting any younger.

cant see where he will fit in to the team in the near future. he's got cassetti, doyley and hodson all ahead of him. doyley has a couple years left in him. cassetti will be done at the end of the season and i assume hodson will be rejoining as he's a better passer than doyley. would be a shame to see any of them go. hopefully thompson can turn into a centre back while he's still young.
