Matej Vydra wrote a fresh chapter in Hornets history on Saturday when he latched on to Almen Abdi’s pass and lifted the ball beyond Nottingham Forest keeper Karl Darlow to seal Watford’s 3-0 win.

The goal was his second of the game and ensured he scored a brace in his fifth successive league start – an achievement no other Hornets player can match since the club joined the Football League in the 1920/21.

The 20-year-old has now scored 18 goals in 24 league appearances and a look at Trefor Jones’ website, www.watfordarchive.com, reveals his scoring rate is the fifth best in the post-war years.

The legendary Cliff Holton leads the way with 23 goals in his first 24 league matches in the 1959/60 season in which he found the net a club record-breaking 42 times in Division Four.

Holton also shares third spot, scoring 19 times in his first time 24 outings in 1960/61, the same record as Ross Jenkins (1978/79), but once behind his 59/60 team-mate Dennis Uphill on 20.

But the speed with which Vydra has reached 18 is quicker than players including Luther Blissett, Mo Johnston, Paul Furlong and the last Watford striker to score that many in season, Danny Graham, who netted 14 in his first 24 league matches of 2010/11.
