Watford spurn two-goal lead as Crystal Palace fight back for Championship point

Watford spurned a great opportunity to move into the automatic promotion places as they let slip a two-goal interval lead and fellow play-off hopefuls Crystal Palace battled back to earn a deserved 2-2 draw in front of the live TV cameras at Vicarage Road tonight.
It was almost the clichéd game of two halves from the Hornets, who played with style and confidence for large periods of the first half but after the break seemed unsure what to do from their position of strength. They sat increasingly deep, the quality of their ball retention and passing got worse as they were over-run in midfield with the visitors' half-time substitute Jonathan Williams very influential, and ultimately Gianfranco Zola’s men were holding on for a point.
It had all started so well for Watford as Almen Abdi fired them into a sixth-minute lead with a fine strike before Nathaniel Chalobah double the advantage seven minutes later.
The Hornets had further chances to wrap up the points before the interval but the visitors started to establish a foothold in the contest and then took control for prolonged periods after the break. And once Peter Ramage had pulled one back on 66 minutes, there was a sense Palace would get another and it came just four minutes later from Vicarage Road old boy Kevin Phillips.
Matej Vydra was in the starting line-up after the Pozzos sent a private jet to bring him back from international duty with the Czech Republic on Wednesday but Zola did make two changes from the side which beat Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.
Joel Ekstrand failed to recover from the knee injury that forced him to pull out of Sweden’s mid-week friendly against Argentina. With Nyron Nosworthy also unavailable after being away with Jamica, Tommie Hoban returned for his first appearance since New Year’s Day.
The other change was through choice as Jonathan Hogg came back into the starting line-up at the expense of Cristian Battocchio, who dropped to the bench.
The game was also particularly significant for Lloyd Doyley, who joined a very select band of Watford players to make 350 league appearances for the club.
Palace picked up their first win since New Year’s Day when they beat Charlton Athletic 2-1 last time out and Ian Holloway opted to make just the one change, with Stephen Dobbie replacing Stuart O’Keefe. That meant Phillips had to settle for a place on the bench on his latest return to the club where he started his professional career.
The Hornets began confidently and Julian Speroni was the first keeper called into action in the second minute, diving to his left to push a stinging 20-yard effort from Abdi away for a corner after Daniel Pudil had laid the ball back to the Swiss midfielder from the left.
The resultant set-piece was half-cleared to outside the right edge of the area where it was worked to Abdi, who laid the ball inside to Vydra but unusually for Watford’s ace marksman he snatched his shot high and wide, although he did have to rush the strike.
It took referee Michael Naylor just four minutes to get his cards out, although Fitz Hall could have few complaints about seeing yellow following a clear late challenge on Yannick Bolasie. But within two minutes the Hornets had made the breakthrough in impressive fashion.
There didn’t appear to be too much on as Vydra pursued Ashley Richards towards the left-hand corner but the Eagles right-back’s clearance was poor and latched on to by Abdi. He came inside on his right foot before curling a lovely low right-footed shot past the helpless Speroni from around 20 yards to make it 1-0.
The visitors sought an instant response and they weren’t too far away from getting it when Dobbie unleashed a right-footed drive from the edge of the area which Manuel Almunia had to push around his right-hand post.
Watford were playing with real confidence though, and in the 14th minute they opened up clear daylight over Holloway’s men.
Vydra chanced his arm with a shot from the left edge of the area which was blocked but the ball spun towards the right side of the penalty box where Marco Cassetti was in space. The Italian went for goal with a right-footed half-volley but he struck the ball into the ground, sending it towards the far post where both Chalobah and Tommie Hoban anticipated something might break and the England Under-21 midfielder rose to head in from a tight angle and make it 2-0.
There was a brief moment of alarm when Bolasie was allowed to advance towards the edge of the 18-yard box before striking a right-footed drive over. But twice Vydra could have made it 3-0 before the 25th minute.
First he uncharacteristically didn’t anticipate when a slip from a Palace defender allowed a low Cassetti cross to fizz across the six-yard box before another fine delivery from the former Roma man picked out the head of the Czech international but he slightly mistimed his leap and guided a fine opportunity wide of the far post.
Palace had been on the back foot but they enjoyed a decent spell approaching the half-hour mark, starting with Almunia rather shovelling a Glenn Murray header behind for a corner. The Championship’s top scorer then headed the resultant set piece over the top before, from the visitors’ next move, Dobbie fired a right-footed shot into the side netting.
The card count was levelled up in the 32nd minute when Alex Marrow cynically went through the back of Chalobah. The on-loan Chelsea youngster was struggling for a couple of minutes afterwards but after some treatment he was able to continue.
Holloway’s side continued to try and push for a way back into the game as the opening half entered its closing stages. Their opponents though, were defending well, although Dobbie was allowed to curl a shot from outside the area three minutes before the break which didn’t unduly trouble Almunia.
Watford had the next opportunity in the last minute of the half when a Daniel Pudil cross from the left was headed away to Chalobah. He played it forward to Vydra, who turned it on to Abdi but Watford’s first goalscorer was unable to keep his shot on the turn down.
Abdi had another opportunity in stoppage time when his side were awarded a free-kick towards the left edge of the area and his right-footed free-kick was deflected narrowly wide of the far post.
The Palace boss made a change to his midfield at the start of the second half, bringing on Williams for Marrow. But the visitors had to wait until the 53rd minute for their first attempt of the half when a Dobbie long-range effort was deflected behind.
After the corner had come to nothing, Holloway made his second change, with Phillips replacing Bolasie before Kagisho Dikgacoi let fly from 25 yards and the shot wasn’t too far over Almunia’s bar.
Palace’s best chance of getting back into the game to date came and went just short of the hour-mark when a Wilfried Zaha cross-shot from the right side of the area struck Murray right in front of goal. But the 24-goal striker was unable to react quickly enough to divert the ball past Almunia.
After Cassetti had been booked for a foul on Williams, Zola decided to make his first change and Fernando Forestieri came on for Vydra, who had looked jaded after being away on international duty.
But in the 66th minute, the visitors were back in the game when a corner from the right was blocked on the line by a combination of Almunia, Doyley and Phillips. With the substitute standing his ground, the two Hornets players were unable to clear their lines and Ramage quickest to slam the ball into the net.
The goal had been coming though, because Watford’s ball retention had been shocking since the interval and they had been pushed back but were also inviting pressure on themselves at times.
Within four minutes, Palace were back on terms.
Forestieri initially looked like he might have come out of the situation with credit when he tracked back with Zaha and slid in to make the challenge. However, he only succeeded in diverting the ball into the path of Richards, who had continued his run forward down the right, and he sent over a cross that Phillips met on the volley and dispatched it emphatically past Almunia to level things up at 2-2.
Watford were rocking but in the 73rd minute they thought they’d taken the lead again when Forestieri appeared to shake off a challenge and pulled the ball back to Troy Deeney, who tapped into the guarded net, only for the goal to be ruled out for a foul by the Argentine.
However, the momentum was firmly with the visitors and the Hornets were almost undone again when Zaha was allowed to squeeze in a low cross from the right and Ramage spun and hit the side netting.
A frustrated Chalobah was booked for kicking the ball away before Holloway made his final change, replacing Dobbie with Butterfield and then the Chelsea loanee made way for Battocchio.
Daniel Pudil was the next name to be taken by the referee for a foul on Zaha, even though the foul was committed by Hoban, and from the resultant free-kick on the right side of the area Ramage planted a header straight at Almunia.
There were to be no further openings in four minutes of stoppage time but while there was a sense of frustration after Watford had let a two-goal interval lead slip, there were also feelings of relief after a very disappointing display after the break.

arly Battocchio. Perhaps he should have started with Forestieri and Geijo, bringing on the tired Vydra and Deeney in the second half. The defence looked shaky and so did Almunia. Abdi, Chalobah and dear old Doyley were my men of the match for Watford. Hoban also played well. But, I repeat, we were lucky to draw and Zola must learn to use his whole squad.

Hello People, Lifetime fan and longtime time reader, sorry for being a stay away (sadly 1 game a season, poor show, shout me down!!) but having watched the game tonight I can still see the long term plan in effect. Vydra is the man, but not the team, but without him training with the others this week and the international duty surely that will take its toll? Palarse chanting didn't help. It became a drone on Sky. I still have every faith that we can remain in the play-off's, which is more than anyone would have ever expected last summer. I have worked around time off work to head to the Sheff Weds game on Tuesday 5th March (again sorry for staying away) but if anyone cares to welcome a new face down and the Y&R Lion? Regardless chaps your banter, wit and humour keep me happy to follow Watford on a daily basis. Thanks for making my working week bearable and be proud that we share the greatest common goal in the world! COYH!!!!

Disappointing of course but taking a point when palace deserved all three has to be seen as a bonus. I thought Hogg was dreadful in possession this evening and was surprised battochio didn't replace him. Thought Hoban did well.

I know Chalobah is 2-3 years younger than Zaha, but he could do with looking at Zaha's performance tonight. Zaha was outstanding. He only did the tricks in our last third and I can't remember him giving the ball away too many times. Without doubt he is a REAL quality act and will go to the very top - we simply couldn't handle him. Chalobah on the other hand, tried the fancy stuff on the edge of our area or deep in our half and lost the ball too many times.
Same for Hogg (minus the tricks) gave the ball away cheaply too many times and their first goal came from giving the ball away deep in our half (although don't think it was Hogg). Having said that most of our team were guilty in the second half on many occasions.
Not sure why we went almost totally long ball in the second half, but we certainly had no creativity and just gave the ball away constantly - poor second half. I think we have to put that down to the way Palace played and it is something we have to learn to deal with. If teams really "get in our face" we do seem to lose our way somewhat.
But...point gained in the end I guess and lucky to hold on against a good side.
7 more wins will guaratnee playoffs and I think we are more than capable of that and from there anything can happen. 10 more wins for automatic!

Zola your obviously a great man and we realise that your still learning the ropes but your (our) team does need a plan B at least and also a C.
After 30 minutes the whole game changed as Palace woke up, what did we do? nothing whatsoever.
Vydra was running on empty and FF
coming on was very poor to put it kindly. Palace must be kicking themselves as they should have put four or five past us in the 2nd half.
no its not a disaster , we got a point and who knows we may have learnt something from it.
Final word for the supporters, what a gold plated embarrassment your vocal support was!!!!!!!!!!

Final word for the supporters, what a gold plated embarrassment your vocal support was!!!!!!!!!!
palace were carried on a wave of emotion by their fans,
our mob simply dragged us down.
Can we have 3000 up in Brum cheering us on to victory please
Show any passion and the looks you get are comical from the rug and flask brigade, who by the way are about my age in the main but a hundred years older in the main.
Those calling for JE I think are wide of the mark, they'd have zipped it around them. Battocchio should have replaced Hogg and those who dig out FF what do they expect from a guy whose getting the odd few minutes here and there?

Once a decent knowledgable manager with a tactical brain susses out this watford team Zola is found wanting
Last night had no answer to the constant palace attacks , no clue how to change it , takes off the only goalscorer that could maybe stretch them at the back , yes he was not his usual self but ... brings on the poor forresiteri or whatever his name is ! clueless and cost us the game with his selfish heads down approach losing possession leading to 2nd goal !!
More examples of Zolas lack of plan b, Blackpool away 2 nil up , appleton changes it , lucky we got a point , Charlton at home "tactical changes " 6 odd changes lose the game, Bristol City the disgraceful changing of the team that night , we lose to bottom team with poorest goalscoring record in league
so sorry Zola needs a plan b and c , we are being gradually sussed out , if plan A does not work , we are in trouble , Holloway was on touchline constantly willing his team on , kicking every ball , Zola sat still doing nothing ,poor !

2-0 up after 15 minutes yet lucky to escape with a draw. Perhaps Zola showed his inexperience this evening. He did not really make use of his substitutes, particul
arly Battocchio.
I dislike Olly with a passion, and think his Ollyisms that the media climax over are twaddle.
Think Hornet Cornet is on the powder, and think JizzHorns needs to get out more often.
Me, I'm depressed at the prospect of the anti brigade expressing their delight at GFZs supposed failure, as they do.

You Can't have read What Mango said.
He said he does not like some of our fan's. He did not say he does not like the football.
From day one Mango has been right behind the Pozzo ethos, the player's and Zola. I know this because i sit next to him at every home game and reckon we have done at least half the away game's so far.
Away from home our fan's are top draw. At away game's it's the same old face's. That create's an atmosphere as people who travel are willing to get involved and make our player's proud of us.
At home game's, too many people expect thing's to be spoon fed to them. To many of our fan's are stuck in 1980 with good old GT. This is 2013. We have the best owner's and player's the club has ever had and given time Zola will be the best manager we have ever had. We should be showing our support and showing how gratefull we are to be treated to what the Pozzo's have given us.
We support our club and we are proud to stand up and sing, shout and get pumped up.
What is not ok is for the majority who go to sit there and only make a noise when a pass is misplaced or a shot missed. On Geijo's debut the bloke next to me said he was rubbish and the worst player he had ever seen. He had been on the pitch for 5 minute's.
I call on the real fan's to stand up and make a noise. If anyone tell's you to sit down and not to make a noise i urge you to confront them and stick to what you want to do. The sooner this club get's rid of the boring stiff's, the better.
Jon, read Mango's piece again and this time properly.
I think you will find you actually agree with him.

Lower rous family stand
Upper rous for investment bankers etc
Rookery for season ticket holders
New east stand nothing flash just a standard stand of about 5k taking total up to about 22k

They in my humble opinion should if they ever bother make a new east stand pay on the day unreservered seating and maybe over 18 only I know you have to have the future fans but I also would like to go to a game scream and shout and swear without getting dirty looks and with like minded working blokes something that seams to be lacking at the mo...
Everyone will probably slate me saying how can I have an opinion if I don't go etc but I would and so would loads of people I know if it was like that
Being an ST holder does not make someone a better fan than those who can only attend a few games through circumstances.
That stand sounds spot on and the Rug and flask brigade must be barred from entering.
Lower rous family stand
Upper rous for investment bankers etc
Rookery for season ticket holders
New east stand nothing flash just a standard stand of about 5k taking total up to about 22k
For pay on day over 18 unreserved seating gives everyone a choice and then maybe the like minded people can find their place and everyone will be happy?
We need to encourage an atmosphere! Even if we try it for the rest of the season!, I know I would like to choose where I stand (sit)

I also think Chalobah is a very good player but he believes he is better than he really is, one day he will become that player but sometimes he lacks the discipline required for the midfield and loses concentration which results in losing the ball.
Saying that I would love to see them start the next game.
I actually thought our support in the first half was vocally very good combined with a good display on the pitch but when we started to throw it away you could feel the anxiety creep in.
Whatever happened to the drummer in the Rookery? Maybe he gave up as well!

Just watched the game as i worked last night. Would have made a rare appearance if I hadn't been but what I heard on the tv justified in my head why I stopped going.... £25 to sit in the cold in what can only be described as a morgue is not my idea of fun.

I'm only saying do that though if and when the new east stand is made.
We used to get 19-20k all the time we could again if they just made some sensible choices instead of trying to force us this family club tag... I'm all for kids coming to the games but they can go in the family stand like I used to go when I was a kid in the family terrace.... Wouldn't dream of going in the vicarage terrace back then would have been trampled to death by some angry printer/brewer.

It's not a good mix and we need our separate areas as we've said.
Just a bit miffed if the change had to take place, I'd have put Battocchio in earlier for Hogg, Geijo for Deeney and Fessi added to the mix.

With the International calls effecting so many of our players and so few of theirs the game should not have been played on Friday night.
No Nosworthy, a worn out Hoban...not helped by stupid uncaring international management, a jet lagged Vydra I think we did well.
As for the idiot Holloway...is he suggesting it is right they sell Zaha, get the money and him back wages paid. We had Almunia, Doyley, Hoban, Hogg, Deeney and Hall with 5 borrowed players. He had Zaha,Dobbin and Kevin P all on loan or s/term signings and few call ups and yet he deems we have an unfair advantage...what a whinger.

I try telling all and sundry about our wonderful expansive game, yet they still stay away.
For some reason, our club has become very middle class and I suspect it's from the estates that missing fans are, or potential fans at least.
I suppose winning promotion will get a few thousand neutrals in to see Premiership football, but we really need a bit of passion in the Vic.
GT once said Watford fans like their football, but are not passionate about it. I always thought that a bit rich as he was instrumental in discouraging the more vocal fans from coming.
