Watford midfielder Stephen McGinn scored his first competitive goal for more than two years at the weekend as another of the Hornets loanees also found the net.

McGinn grabbed a consolation goal for Shrewsbury Town as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to promotion-chasing Sheffield United.

The Scot completed his first 90 minutes of competitive football last week for the Shrews, following a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a knee ligament injury, and a second full outing for Graham Turner’s men ended with him scoring a fortuitous 35-yard free-kick.

Elsewhere in League One, Watford striker Chris Iwelumo opened his account for manager-less Oldham Athletic in their 3-1 win over MK Dons. Iwelumo tapped in the third Latics goal as they gave their survival hopes a welcome boost following the dismissal of manager Paul Dickov.

Fellow Watford loanee Steve Beleck had a frustrating afternoon for Hertfordshire neighbours Stevenage, completing just 13 minutes of Boro's 2-1 defeat at Carlisle United before being sacrificed for ex-Hornets goalkeeper Chris Day. Beleck made way after the early dismissal of first-choice goalkeeper Steve Arnold at Carlisle, with the score already 1-0.

Lee Hodson was an unused substitute for Brentford as the promotion hopefuls were held to a 2-2 draw by Kevin Blackwell’s Bury.

In League Two, Britt Assombalonga's goalless run was extended to nine matches in all competitions.

Assombalonga scored 12 goals in his first 22 games on loan at Southend United but he has not found the net since November 24. The 20-year-old completed 86 minutes for Southend as the Shrimpers salvaged a 1-1 draw at lowly Accrington Stanley.

Piero Mingoia played 76 minutes for Blue Square Conference South outfit, Boreham Wood, in their 0-0 draw at home to Bath City, while fellow Watford loanee, Aaron Tumwa, was not part of the Wealdstone squad which won 2-1 at Enfield Town.
