AUDIO: 'Burnt fingers' played a part in Gianfranco Zola's rotation decision at Ipswich Town

Gianfranco Zola admitted the "burnt fingers" he suffered at Bristol City was a factor when he decided to only make three changes against Ipswich Town last night.

Zola has often made wholesale alterations to his line-up when Watford have had three games in eight days and his side lost 2-0 to bottom-of-the-table Bristol City three weeks ago after making six changes.

The Italian opted to make just three adjustments to the starting XI at Portman Road last night, one of which was forced as Daniel Pudil was withdrawn through illness.

"I did that [only made three changes] because I didn't want to upset you any more," Zola joked when asked by the Watford Observer's Frank Smith.

"No I just felt if I could change one player in each part of the pitch - so one striker, one midfielder and one defender - then I could give an injection of freshness. I thought that would be enough and then I wanted to make the other changes during the game.

"I changed the approach slightly because I burnt my fingers last time [at Bristol City]. But I think it is important that we realise we have already played 33 and there are 13 more to go, plus maybe the play-offs, so we need to keep everybody motivated and in good form.

"We cannot think we are going to finish the season with only 11 players. That is the logic behind my changes, especially when we play [another game] after a few days.

"You can see that with every team; when they play on a Saturday, then on Tuesday night it is always difficult. You can see that with the results around today. I bet they maybe didn't make as many changes."

Burnt fingers indeed. I just hope we do not pay the penalty of ending up in the play-offs lottery. Keeping everyone happy is not the right approach when you make wholesale changes. A couple of changes now and then to rest players and keep them fresh is understandable. Onwards and upwards but the challenges ahead are Hull and Leicester and perhaps moving the HUll game back a day - although disappointing to travelling fans is a blessing in disguise

Like many other Watford supporters I knew that GZ had made a mistake with the team he selected for the Bristol city match as soon as I saw it!! . The problem was changing virtually the whole midfield that night, which completely upset the balance. His selection last night was spot on, and especially keeping Vydra fresh for saturday is right. At the end of the day GZ has done an amzing job, and he certainly has my trust in whatever he decides. The most exciting season ever at Watford and what we all forget "MOST UNEXPECTED" as well. How good does it feel to be a Watford supporter today??

I think the changes were needed, although would rather Eustace for Hogg, who just always seems to give the ball away and lose us momentum. I didn't go so don't slate me too much you lucky few who did. But listening on 3cr it constantly sounded like the ball was getting passed around nicely...unroll Hogg lost it and put us on the back foot! Please tell me I am wrong, as Hogg was one of our better players last term, as were yeates and Murray...shows how far we have come I suppose!
As for martin Samuels comments about us going up at the expense of a team who deserve it more...why does a team deserve it more just because they have a big enough budjet to sign great players on big contracts?! Not a level playing field when we were taken over, and it ain't level now, mainly cos we are the ones ripping the league into little yellow pieces!

Forza watford!!!

I still believe block rotation needs to be worked on and not forgotten. Once perfected it is ideal to have options that pose different problems to those expected by the opposition and as defensive or attacking units there should be far more cohesion and familiarity.

However now is too late to experiment further and with the season at such a crucial stage it is time to pack away such thoughts.

The loan system can be argued from all different ways. You could argue how Martin Samuel's belovered West Ham can borrow a £35 million striker and pay a quarter of his wages. I wish we could do that. Also how can they pay an upfront fee of 1/2 million pounds for the loan of an international defender? Our only saving grace is that the FA hate him, so wont be intimidated by his relentless onslaught of drivel to get Watford banned from football.

Totally agreed. Curiously the locally based Tractor Times only gave the Nos 6, whereas Hogg got 9!
Not sure which match they were watching. although they acknowledged our 'sumptuous' passing movements and reckon we're the best team to have visited this season.

I totally respect Zola for admitting the Bristol City line up was wrong! Too many un necessary changes that night that completely disrupted our play!
He got it right last night and that's a sign of him willing to put the result first rather then keeping all 21 pros happy!
For me it's all about the results now and as we are so close I think Zola is starting to realise this as he has admitted that he didn't expect to be in this position so quick!
We have a great squad, it's up to the players to hold on to their place or for a fringe player to play there way in like Anya has the last two games!
Zola doesn't need to make wholesale changes as quite naturally players will be suspended, I'll or injured at any point and someone else will rise to the occasion!
Nosworthy has come back into the side and been superb, the same for Doyley and Anya! And that's with having Hall and Hoban out!... That's my point!

I'd go with that side Duffman, but I have a feeling he might rest Chalobah, I hope not though. It's clear though from now on with the all games coming up, we're unlikely to see an unchanged side. I have absolutely no idea how Derby are playing at the moment so will trust the side Zola puts out. Let's just hope for a full ground on Saturday.

1st 10-15 mins we were unstoppable then the pitch started to cut up and that's when we started to lose the ball and allowed Ipswich to get back in it.
Hogg & Chalobah never stopped running even when they had picked up knocks.
So at no time they were 'giving the ball away' on a better pitch we would have scored at least another couple. If you saw the match all players were caught on the ball or lost it but it seems fashionable to pick on the centre 2 who have the ball most!

I've found Hogg to be playing ok so far and Chaloboah is fantastic! The bar has been risen so high this season that an ok performance is now bad?
I would want Cassetti to play but at 35 and with a lot of game time in only a few days I can see Zola resting him and Hogg too!
Mind you we do have to pinch ourselves don't we? Well who shall we leave out?.... Geijo, Fessi, Munji Bai, Murray, Yeates, Eustace? Oh at that's with the possibly missing Hall and Hoban AND with the deffo missing Neuton and Bauban!
We surely must have the best squad in this division by a country mile! And because of this surely we CAN win it!
Come on you horns! Gianfranco's yellow army!

Absolutely spot on, Mickey. I have the upmost respect for Zola when he admits his mistakes and even jokes about it. It shows me that he has class and wisdom enough to be better. In Zola we trust. Can´t wait to plan a trip from Denmark to the Vic next year when we hit the Prem.

Would like to GEIJO AND VYDRA start up front on Saturday. Deeney needs a rest.

We can catch Cardiff no doubt about it - they will wobble. Reading the articles on 'walesonline' anyone would think they have promotion in the bag. Talk about back slapping and high fives before they've got the prize.

If this was Dec I would agree but there are too few games left to catch Cardiff. They would need to collapse rather than wobble and, with the quality they have bought this season, I don't see it happening sadly. In reality we are one of 4 racing for that 2nd spot.

yep 8 points ahead and a game in hand. As I said a wobble would not be enough and sadly I dont believe they'll collapse. Would be more likely that Brighton in 7th would overtake us, taking into account games to play, than we would catch cardiff ....but that also wont happen !!

Catching Cardiff would take some doing, agreed, but I am not quite so accepting as you that 2nd place is all we can hope for. They always fade at the end and may be it's just started again and Wolves away next will be tricky for them. Playing teams down there at this stage of the season is difficult. I would rather that Cardiff ARE patting themselves on the back already. And remember, we have to play them yet.

Funilly enough it was the young Chelsea lad that gave the ball away all evening but in his defence the pitch was in worse condition than ours last year !
Hogg and Chalobah both gave up possession easily. Hogg because he's not sharp enough and Chalobah because he can get casual.
Zola is dead right we will not complete season with same 11, so changes will be made.
There has been a lobby that hanker for Hogg and Eustace, well they played at Bristol, and our midfield was dire.
Saturday? Geijo and Vydra for me, Deeney has worked his socks off and must be tired.

That last game between Hull and Cardiff bothers me, even at this early stage. I can see either Cardiff already up and in passport and suitcase mode in which case it's a given three points to the tigers, or less likely, the draw suits both and we see a game where both sides f**t about in the middle third and produce a very adequate 0-0 draw.

As regards Saturday, return of the bat and otter please - anything else is up to you GFZ

Talk that they are already up is like us saying we have definitely made play offs. We haven't nor are they up. Yet.
And when are we all going to stop referring to Bristol City? FFS The last tinker was Tuesday and we won, lets talk about that.

No, it's not over till the fat lady sings. Cardiff have yet to wobble, if they don't then they deserve that place but for me there's two places to go for, and we have Cardiff here, that could be a six pointer. I honestly think if we fire on all, ten wins is a possibility.

If we won 9 and drew 1 of our last 13, Cardiff could afford to win 6 draw 3 and lose 5 of their 14 and still finish above us. Forget them, we must overtake hull and stay ahead of CP and L to avoid the playoff lottery
No, it's not over till the fat lady sings. Cardiff have yet to wobble, if they don't then they deserve that place but for me there's two places to go for, and we have Cardiff here, that could be a six pointer. I honestly think if we fire on all, ten wins is a possibility.
Pointless arguing Quinny. Im an optimist and your in bad need of a diet to cheer you up! ;-)
You're an optimist and I'm a realist !! I really hope you're right, just think its very very unlikely. If we could beat C, L and H we'd be in a fantastic position !

As regards Saturday, return of the bat and otter please - anything else is up to you GFZ
Already up? No there's over a quarter of season left. An old team. I agree they will probably make it, but another loss, and who knows?
Talk that they are already up is like us saying we have definitely made play offs. We haven't nor are they up. Yet.
And when are we all going to stop referring to Bristol City? FFS The last tinker was Tuesday and we won, lets talk about that.
I think it will hinge on how we do against Cardiff and Hull, although the rest are vitally important, we can't afford a slip up though but must maintain that self belief if we have a minor slip.

GFZ is big enough to admit his mistake and that speaks volume for his leadership and this will only add to the team spirit. Who in today's world ever admits when they've got it wrong? He's got my respect.
Like others I am pleased if he admits mistakes and learns from them but his 'burnt fingers' comments contrast starkly from his comments immediately after the Bristol City defeat when he defended his six changes and said he'd do it again. Read what he said on this web site

Can't you give it rest? It's gone, past.
I find it slightly worrying you keep these links to wave about as some kind of inference that GFZ is backtracking.
This, coming off the back of a run of 8 games that has seen us win 6 draw 1 and lose 1. Scoring 13 conceding 5.
They are the things I want o be discussing.

Great that 'Just one Cassetti ' is gaining momentum.

One thing , I put Udinese as the last word of the second verse as the first verse finishes with 'Italy '
It still scans and can be emphasised with a flourish!

I am super optimistic - just love watching every game - do Saracens now play at Ipswich? - by the state of their pitch.
If we play to our potential then we can and will beat anyone in this division and with Warnock saying he will quit if Leeds dont get promotion, I would love to be assured of automatic promotion by 27th April (Leicester) celebrate at Vicarage Road the next week and put 5 past Leeds to stop them being in the playoffs and wave goodbye to NW - Sweet!!!!!!

How about this for a song?
