Gianfranco Zola reflects on Watford's dramatic win over Leicester City

His ‘Jose Mourinho moment’ may have ended with him on his backside, but by his own admission, Gianfranco Zola was not in control of his emotions. Very few inside Vicarage Road were.

“You saw me hey; I thought I would get away with it,” Zola admitted when asked about his tumble whilst celebrating Troy Deeney’s deciding goal.

“I don’t feel anything right now but I have probably pulled something and it will no doubt come tomorrow morning.

“I just lost it. I don’t even know where I was going. I don’t know whether I was chasing Troy or someone else.

“That is football. I felt younger making that run.”

“That is the passion,” he continued. “I said to myself that I have to be composed and respectful but when it happens, you can’t control it. That is why we love this game.”

It was an incredible turn of events.

In the dying moments of the match, Anthony Knockaert was all set to fire Leicester City into the Championship play-off final after the winger went down, following minimal contact by Marco Cassetti.

But a superb double save from Manuel Almunia allowed Cassetti to smash the ball clear. It was controlled expertly by Ikechi Anya, who headed up the right wing before releasing Fernando Forestieri. The forward’s deep cross was nodded down by Jonathan Hogg and Deeney fired the ball emphatically into the back of Leiceister’s net. Then hysteria.

The drama was unbelievable, in the literal sense.

Surely a once in a lifetime string of events?

But what makes today even more incredible, is that it comes just two weeks after almost identical circumstances in a game between Brentford and Doncaster Rovers, which was also refereed by Michael Oliver.

A bizarre coincidence which provided Zola with hope following Almunia’s penalty save.

He said: “There was a reaction straight away because it was a soft penalty in a game like that – very soft penalty.

“It came to me; in the last two months, how many times have we complained about penalties we haven’t received and they were clearer penalties than that?

“I am sorry because I know I should be celebrating – and I am celebrating – but it is good I say this because it would have been unfair for my team to lose the game because of that.

“We didn’t want to give up and I didn’t give up. I stopped complaining and Manu (Almunia) did the rest. He made an unbelievable save and then the second save.

“As we cleared the box and I saw the ball travelling towards our strikers, the film of Brentford’s game came to me; when they conceded against Doncaster. I had that movie in my mind and I was spot on.

“Obviously it was a good cross in and a header back by Jonathan Hogg and the finish from Troy was as good as it could be.”

Today was surely one of the best days in Zola’s career and one which he thoroughly enjoyed.

But the Italian is not renowned for being one of football’s nice guys for no reason and he started his post-match press conference by paying tribute to his opposite number Nigel Pearson.

Zola said: “Well before I talk about the game, I would like to pay respect to my colleague Nigel. He has been a gentleman on and off the pitch so my thoughts go to him and his team.

“Both of these teams deserve to go up because they did very well.

“So my thoughts are for him right now. It could have been us in the end. Sometimes football can be cruel.

“Obviously I am very happy for myself but I have a lot of respect for the man.

“Sorry about starting with that but it was due.”

There will be further reaction from Zola and the Watford players in the coming days.

Whilst I share Zola's sympathy for Pearson, the fact is that Knockaert "bought" the penalty, so justice was done.

All credit then to FF who bust a gut to get into position to take the pass from Anya and lay on a perfect cross for Hogg to set up Deeney.

Three magnificently worked goals to set against a sloppy one to give away. Wembley deserves Watford, whoever we play.

Whatever happens at Wembley this game will always go down as a once in a lifetime special moment when I was there to share it with my son and thousands of very happy Watford fans.
To one minute feel so down when Leicester got the penalty and then watch in disbelief as Alumina saved it twice and then see it moved upfield with such speed was a relief. But to then see it headed back by Hogg and watch Troy smash it into the net was just out of this world.

I turned to my son and hugged the life out of him and we both collapsed to our knees. Fortunatley he's still talking to me after I explained it was a Dad moment and these things happen. We then ran down to the front of the Vic stand and cheered the boys on their lap of honour.

We may not be one of the big clubs but Watford will always be a special club for fans like me who have followed them for over 40 years through the good and the bad times. We now need to regroup, recharge the batteries and finish the job at Wembley.

Proud to be a hornet, proud to say I was there. Come on you Horns see you all at Wembley.

Bang on! And that is why we are such a special club. It is NEVER dull either on or off the pitch. But right now, we've got FLAIR on the pitch, and STABILITY off it. Long may it reign.

unreal, never seen anything like it. could hardly sleep last night and have wandered into the office very late and still buzzing.

that refereeing performance though has to go down as one of the worst. we've all seen some bad ones at the vic in recent years but some of the second half decisions were appalling. had it not have finished in the way it did, we would all be on here this morning slating the peno decision and the disallowed deeney goal. surely the league have to look at some of these performances and decisions and do something about the standard of refereeing.

Alas, the poor referee's will never be whittled out, in todays crass PC culture the FA and whoever control the referee's can't tell them they are crap, useless etc, it's a discussion and further coaching on awareness and rules, whilst they still wreak havoc, that one decision could have cost us a chance of £120m, and what redress would we have had, inappropriately sweet FA, something has to be done to compensate clubs for such appalling decisions, after all the FA are quick to jump on clubs for errors.

What a game!!!!!!!!!!! What a result!!!!!!! and Justice!

Go back to the first leg and Knockaert foul mouthed the linesman right at the beginning and another weak ref did nothing. Should have been yellow and then his second yellow later would have been red and he would not have played in the 2nd leg. Then he dives and the looks a total plonker!!! Justice done.

Lets just hope we get proper officials at Wembley. Big pitch flat surface - made for sexy WFC football.

I didn't see the game due to unforeseen circumstances.
How heartbroken I was.
My mate was on the pulse though and had the decency to call me to tell me that Leicester had a pen, and then kept me waiting as we broke.
Needless to say, in my own little Vic there was pandamonium and anybody within 100 square meters must have heard me shout. God only knows what the family must have thought.
And now I keep watching the highlights of those crazy 30 seconds, Zola falling over, the Vics thousands of beautiful beautiful fans gracing the turf.
Even reading the various press reports brings a tear of joy to my eye.
Oh what it is to be a Watford fan.
Watford FC, I love you!

A kick and a scoff, then Deeney was sent off,
He missed the next game, their goal was tame,
Deeney’s a star, he drives a gold car (I might have that bit up),
We lost the in Leicester, our lads weren’t pestered.

We played at The Vic,
Through thin and through thick,
Matty scored a great goal,
He’s a Czech not a pole.

Nugent then netted,
His headed wasn’t vetted,
Matty scored once again,
He erased all our pain.

As the game wore on,
I had to adjust my thong,
Leicester hoofed the ball long,
But they were all off-song.

Then there was a tart,
Who’s name was Knockhart,
We should send him to the Old Bailey,
He dives better than Tom Daley.

They took their cheating shot,
Almunia double-blocked,
Cassetti did pass it,
Leicester really are s***.

Cassetti to Ikechi,
Ikechi to Fessi,
Fessi to the Hogg,
Deeney was the last cog.

Watford had scored,
We were going through,
Zola we love you,
And the Pozzo’s we love too.

I thank you

I nearly wore my Sky+ box out last night. Must have played those 30 seconds 100 times. Just got in from work and played it again...still looks unbelievable. If it all ends tomorrow for me, got my wife, great kids and the ectasy of yesterday, yep, I'll take that. I saw everthing yesterday, I hugged a stranger, my mate thew up and I watched a 60 year old lady with her shopping bag, being told to get off the pitch so the players can come back...surreal. Going back to my Sky+ box again, just to make sure it really happened.
Oh, by the way, were our owners there yesterday? I did see some Italian looking people in suits on the pitch but couldn't get a good look.

We are so lucky to have GFZ, he is changing the image of the club, all very POZZOtive!

Everyone keeps comparing our game to the game between Brentford and Doncaster. But Brentford had to win and Doncaster only needed a draw, so Doncasters goal after Brentfords missed penalty did not change anything.

Whereas Troy Deeneys wonder strike after Knockheart cheated for a penalty seured us a place in the final instead of extra time.

Come on you 'orns, we are the best team in final and I too love GFZ, awesome.
