Sunderland have had a loan bid for Udinese striker and former Watford loanee Matej Vydra rejected.

This comes after an unnamed Premier League club had an £8m bid for the Czech Republic international rejected last week - you can read about that bid here.

"It is correct that Sunderland are interested, but they are interested in a loan at the moment. They don’t want to spend that money at the moment," Ondrej Chovanec, Vydra's agent, told The Journal.

"The final decision is with Udinese Calcio and the owner Gianpaolo Pozzo and there are a lot of clubs interested in this player.

"Matej is a quality player and a top player for them, so they will be looking for the best deal available. He can play in a top level and I think that is what he will be doing next season."

Sunderland are one of several Premier League and Bundesliga clubs interested in the striker.

Chovanec knows Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio from his days at West Ham as the agent represented Tomas Repka and Lukas Magera, who joined Di Canio's former club Swindon Town.

The Black Cats' chief scout Valentino Angeloni also used to work for the Pozzos at Udinese.

Chovanec added: "It is an interesting club – but then Sunderland is always an interesting club in England.

"To work with Paolo Di Canio would be a good thing. I think he will probably end up coaching with one of the very top teams in England."

Vydra has two years left on his contract at Udinese so unless he agrees a new deal, it would come as a surprise if the Pozzos did allow him to leave on a season-long loan as players are usually worth less with 12 months or less remaining on their contract.

The Pozzos are renowned for giving young players long contracts, developing their talent and then attempting to sell them at their maximum transfer value, and the family claim they are in talks with the striker regarding a new five-year deal.

Chovanec has said he doesn't expect Vydra to remain at Watford this season but Pozzo has stated the 21-year-old will return to Watford.

Vydra won the Championship Player of the Year award last season and scored 22 goals during his first year in English football.
