Watford are currently reconsidering whether they want to sign Udinese's Jaime Romero after it was discovered his injury is worse than initially feared.

Romero was set to join the Hornets in a permanent move and had been on the club's pre-season trip to Italy.

But the 23-year-old, who plays left midfield or full back, suffered an ankle injury in Watford's intra-club match at the training base in Mals, South Tyrol, 12 days ago.

Last Thursday head coach Gianfranco Zola said he expected Romero to be out for three to four weeks but following yesterday's draw with Peterborough United, he confirmed it is more likely to be four to five weeks.

All of the other players who joined the Hornets during pre-season have now signed for the club permanently.

When asked whether Romero would still be joining Watford, Zola replied: "We are having a look because he has a problem with his ankle so we are reassessing the situation to see what to do."

He added: "I think it is looking a bit longer now; it is looking more like four or five weeks."

Romero started his career at local club Albacete and made 36 appearances in his debut season as an 18 year old.

This prompted Udinese to sign the youngster and he made one start and three substitute appearances during his first year in Italy.

He made 11 outings on loan at Bari in the Serie A during the 2010/11 campaign before joining Granada on loan in the summer of 2011.

Romero spent 18 months with the Pozzo-owned Spanish club, making 20 appearances in his debut season and then 11 during the first half of last season.

He was loaned out to Turkish Super Lig strugglers Orduspor for the final three months of the season, making 11 outings.
