Luther Blissett's ninth-minute strike, nutmegging Ray Clemence in the process, gave Watford a satisfying victory over a Tottenham Hotspur side described by the Watford Observer as "cyncical" and "malevolent".

Brian Talboot and Lee Sinnott picked up injuries in the game after which manager Graham Taylor declined to comment directly on the visitors' approach, suggesting that: "The local fans who have witnessed Spurs' visits to Vicarage Road will judge the situation and need no help from me."

Future Watford manager Steve Perryman captained the Spurs side.
