Watford went down 2-1 to Preston North End at Deepdale in a second division game.
The Hornets' consolation came from Ross Jenkins, his 100th league goal for the club. It was also his last game for the Hornets before a six-month spell with Washington Diplomats where he played under former Watford boss Ken Furphy.
He returned to Vicarage Road to score 13 goals as the club earned promotion to the top flight for the first time the following season.
