Rotherham United, managed by former Watford forward Jimmy McAnearney, were the visitors to Vicarage Road.
An appeal had led to supporters turning up at the ground to clear the pitch and the terraces of snow; they were rewarded for their endeavours by a 5-1 victory in front of TV cameras with Walter Lees coming off the bench to score his first two goals for the club.
A dozen tarpaulins and 285 bales of straw had been laid on the pitch to ensure the game went ahead.
