A crowd of almost 20,000 saw Watford inflict Fulham's first home defeat of the season at Craven Cottage.

Frank McPherson gave the visitors an early lead, but the home side were 2-1 up at the break.

Five minutes into the second half, Fulham's goalkeeper Mason failed to hold Frank Smith's stinging shot and McPherson followed up to equalise.

Bill Sheppard and Billy Chapman combined to set up the winning goal for McPherson, who had also scored the club's two goals on his debut during the season's earlier encounter between the two sides at Vicarage Road.

This was a supremely gritty victory, achieved despite a number of players requiring treatment. One of the wounded, Eddie Fuller, played once more for the club, his replacement in the half-back line, Arthur Woodward, taking advantage of Fuller's injury to establish himself in the side.
