Watford sold Bruce Dyer to Crystal Palace for £1.25m. Dyer became the country's first million-pound teenager, and the fee was briefly a club record.

However, having been sold after less than a season in the first team and with fewer than 40 appearances to his credit, his sale provoked considerable resentment.

Dyer was to return to Vicarage Road nine years later.

We played his new club Pal4rse not long after. Our pitch was in a bad way and the cheeky '4rse manager suggested we spend some of the transfer fee on sorting out the pitch. Not bad from a club trousering extra cash for their own pitch in a sh1t state as hired out to two other clubs.
