Watford travelled to Fratton Park for a second division encounter with Portsmouth.

This being the second season during which clubs were permitted to name and use two substitutes for Football League fixtures, David and Dean Holdsworth set a new record - as well as confusing Portsmouth's announcer - by becoming the first twins to be named as substitutes for the same game in the Football League.

Both were used, and centre-back David scored in a 2-2 draw, with Glyn Hodges grabbing the other for the visitors.
