The Hornets succeeded where they had crucially failed the previous May, defeating a Blackburn Rovers side destined for a second successive play-off disappointment in a second division match at Vicarage Road.
Goals from Paul Wilkinson, David Holdsworth and Gary Penrice sealed a 3-1 victory that could have been more convincing for the home side, Penrice again rounding Terry Gennoe in the last minute of the game.
In coming on as substitute for Lee Richardson, Kenny Jackett made the last of his 428 senior appearances for the club; a persistent knee injury was to end his playing career the following summer.
