Kicking off a spectacular late run of form that pushed the Hornets away from the relegation zone and into mid-table, West Ham were dispatched 5-0 at Vicarage Road.
An error by Hammers' keeper Tom McAlister allowed Les Taylor to open the scoring with what proved to be his final goal for the club.
Luther Blissett added two more before the break including a 25-yarder that was to win the club's Goal of the Season award.
John Barnes scored the fourth and Colin West completed the rout on his home debut.
A further 22 meetings and nearly 22 years were to pass before Watford beat West Ham again.
