Victory over Plymouth Argyle at Vicarage Road confirmed Watford's promotion to the second tier of the Football League for the first time.
The club's highest league crowd of the season - dwarfed only by what remains the club's record attendance during the FA Cup replay with Manchester United - saw a disputed Roy Sinclair goal settle the game and seal promotion.
The victory provoked emotional scenes, as the crowd invaded the pitch on the final whistle and Ken Furphy's side took a bow from the directors' box.
