Watford entertained a Southampton team heading for the runners-up spot that the Hornets had enjoyed at the end of the previous campaign.
Mo Johnston gave the home side the lead after latching onto a George Reilly flick-on and came close to a second on the hour, but David Armstrong converted Danny Wallace's cross to equalise for the Saints ten minutes later.
The result was the first of four consecutive 1-1 draws in this fixture.
