Having looked set for promotion a month earlier, a poor run-in left Watford needing to better Coventry City's result at home to Colchester United to achieve promotion on the final day of the 1963/64 season.

Unhelpfully, the Blues' own game was a trip to Kenilworth Road where they were beaten 2-1 while City were winning both their game and the third division title.

Third place was a highest-ever finish for the club, but this was nonetheless regarded as a disappointment.

The game proved to be the final match for Watford for both leading scorer Charlie Livesey - sold to Northampton Town in the summer - and soon-to-be-legendary goalkeeper Pat Jennings, who departed for a club record £27,000 to Tottenham Hotspur.
