Graham Taylor's side's pursuit of first division survival had extended this possibility to the visit of Martin O'Neill's Leicester City; themselves needing a result to confirm a play-off place.
Watford needed to win and for results elsewhere to favour them, but the tension of the occasion contributed to an atmosphere that was taut rather than boisterous.
Muzzy Isset's second-half goal for Leicester merely underlined what results elsewhere were confirming: the Hornets' return to the third tier 17 years after leaving it.
Leicester were to achieve promotion via the play-offs.
