Tommy Mooney left Watford to join Birmingham City 13 years ago today

Out-of-contract Tommy Mooney joined Birmingham City from Watford.

A versatile player whose contribution was more about 'how' than 'where', from the point at which his run of goals propelled Watford in the play-offs in 1999, he was very much seen as a striker.

Having missed much of the subsequent campaign through injury, his final season in Hertfordshire saw him become the first Watford player for eight years to score 20 goals in a season, many of them ferociously bullied in at the far post.

That was a sad day for WFC :-(

However, I'm not sure if my memory is playing tricks with me or not, but didn't he only go purely because, as usual, we were broke, and he did not ask or necessarily want to leave?

Tommy tried to do all he could to get Watford promoted again. When the ball went out for a corner he would sometimes fetch it to get the ball into play asap.

He left I think because as part of his negotiations Tommy let it be known that he had interest from other clubs and Vialli said if he wants to go he can go.

Vialli was right - why keep your star players in contract when you can bring in your chums on massive contracts instead.

Big error to let him go especially when you look at some of the crap Viali brought in and the ludicrous money they were being paid.

What made Tommy so special, appart from his total commitment was an ability to fashion goals out of nothing. It is a rare ability and something few strikers are gifted with. A true Watford legend.
