Watford paid their second highest transfer fee to that point in recruiting 29-year-old Roy Brown from Stoke City for over £5,000.
Signed as a forward, Brown scored 21 goals in his first season but later moved back to centre-half, both positions employing Brown's aerial prowess to good effect.
He was one of the few black professionals of his era but not the first to play for Watford, the Cother brothers beating him by more than 50 years.
