The Hornets have made enquiries about former Italy international Massimo Ambrosini but we understand Daniel Tozser remains their priority in the holding midfield role.
Ambrosini is out of contract after a season with Fiorentina and the Golden Boys did make initial enquiries about the 37-year-old, who has 35 caps for Italy and spent 18 years at AC Milan.
However, Watford remain in advanced talks with former loanee Tozser over a permanent move from Genoa, where he has two years left on his contract.
The Hornets have considered several alternative options for the holding midfield role, including Ambrosini and Columbia's Alexander Mejia, but Tozser remains their number one target for the position.
