Watford did enquire about ex-Italy and AC Milan midfielder Massimo Ambrosini but Daniel Tozser still the priority

The Hornets have made enquiries about former Italy international Massimo Ambrosini but we understand Daniel Tozser remains their priority in the holding midfield role.

Ambrosini is out of contract after a season with Fiorentina and the Golden Boys did make initial enquiries about the 37-year-old, who has 35 caps for Italy and spent 18 years at AC Milan.

However, Watford remain in advanced talks with former loanee Tozser over a permanent move from Genoa, where he has two years left on his contract.

The Hornets have considered several alternative options for the holding midfield role, including Ambrosini and Columbia's Alexander Mejia, but Tozser remains their number one target for the position.

For all the naysayers- the Pozzos lack ambition for Watford do they? No, they are not prepared to throw money at it a la QPR, Cardiff, Leicester (even). Not their methodology. If Plan A doesn't work they look at Plan B or C. Wow, when was the last time a winner like Ambrosini was associated with us - even tentatively.

My first reaction was pozzotive about ambrosini, he was in the top drawer of Italian midfielders. However as class as pirlo is I couldn't imagine him in the championship at his age and I'm guessing ambrosini may be similar.

Tozser adapted to the pace of the championship quite quickly, made a lot of tackles (got booked a lot too!)

He is the next cog I hope!!!

True Italian legend and an honour to be linked with such a name.
But like Inzagi, this time last year, don't think he is the right fit for us at his age and in such a physical league

If we could't afford/prepared to pay 30k a week for chalobah, I'd be surprised if we could ever afford Ambrosini's wages. As amazing as it would be to see a player like that at Watford, don't see it happening.

Negotiations were apparently ongoing a few months ago with Toszer and with WFC looking at other players at the same time maybe they aren't 100% confident of signing him, hopefully he will sign and we can have a good year.

Toszer is definitely a priority. A shame Luke Freeman went to Bristol City. A real talent.

It would be interesting to know what the stumbling block is with Toszer. I'd guess it's the transfer fee. It would be a shame to miss out on him over a few thousand quid when the potential payback is so high. But there's the dilemna, do you gamble on the big prize or stick with what's got you this far. I'd say make an exception with this one and just go the money, but then it's not my money.

As far as I am aware, this would constitute an actual TRANSFER from Genoa so would have to be transacted in July, not quite now.

Good call, we can't sign him until 1st July, and the Pozzo's like to keep their cards close to their chest. I have a feeling if the deal was done and dusted it would have leaked out though. I hope I'm wrong.
