Watford defender Essaid Belkalem and Algeria impressed against Germany but the Africans exited the World Cup after a 2-1

Watford Observer: Algeria and Belkalem impress but exit World Cup Algeria and Belkalem impress but exit World Cup

A spirited performance wasn’t enough for Essaid Belkalem and Algeria as the Africans exited the World Cup at the last 16 stage after a 2-1 extra time defeat to Germany.

The Hornets centre-back, who only made ten appearances for Watford last season, played the entire contest for his country and impressed.

The game was goalless at full time after Algeria more than matched Germany throughout the 90 minutes.

However, less than 120 seconds after the restart Chelsea forward Andre Schurrle put the Germans ahead as he back heeled a shot into the net from close range.

Algeria continued to battle and created problems. But in the closing moments of extra time, Belkalem cleared a Schurrle effort off the line and the rebound fell to Mesut Ozil who lashed the ball home to double the Germans lead.

The African side managed to grab a consolation goal and it was one they more than deserved.

Abdelmoumene Djabou volleyed in at the back-post in the dying seconds but it ultimately wasn’t enough and it is Germany who will take on France in the quarter finals.

Belkalem was excellent tonight and one of Algeria's best players. He also seemed to have more stamina than most of his colleagues. He and WFC should be proud. There is obviously more to this guy than was apparent to most fans last season and he more than deserves fresh consideration by all. Luv the Horns!

Was surprised and impressed.

Think he tried too hard to impress for us last year, tried to win every ball/ every challenge and ended up giving away some silly fouls.

On the back of yesterday he could play in a flat back four or surely centre of a back 3? Half his issue was distribution and being dragged wide when right side of a back 3 getting isolated against nippy wingers!

More pozzotives for next year!

Fully agree - he obviously isn't the quickest but he showed very good presence and stability in the centre.
Plus he has the height we need in the middle for the corners.
Hope the coaches were watching - and cheering him on!!
Remember - he was playing against Top German players!!

On this evidence Belkalem is clearly good enough to be the commanding centre back we've lacked with the loss of Fitz and Nos.
He seemed to have an excellent understanding with Halliche and they were much more than the sum of their parts - the opposite of what our central defence was last season.
So maybe Sannino needs to decide on the best partner for him - Hoban for me - and get them training and playing continuously together as a unit.
If he stays, how about trying Angella in a defensive shield/sweeper position?

I have given everyone a plus score as -

all are keen to speak up for players who make the effort

and are balanced -

yes he did not have a brill season and then he goes out and puts his dangly bits on the line in front of the world against Stan Boardman's chip shop bombers.

He was outstanding - given that he was against the ultimate test - a World Cup pedigree side.

All the above is history so EB - give the Golden Boys your best and enjoy the 2014/15 promotion season!

Sorry to be the naysayer here and I hope that he improves but for me he doesnt play one decent game and instantly become the defensive messiah. He did some good things and looked far more comfortable being in the centre than to one side of a defensive three but this has more to do with his lack of mobility than anything else.

He completely lost Muller for his header, and was fortunate that his then being out of position for the cross put him in a good position to block the follow up effort from (I think ) Shurlle.

For the goal conceded he could have gone to the ball to shut down the cross but was clearly concerned about being pulled out of position so in the end stood off, not really doing anything and saw the resultant cross go through his legs.

That being said his display was indeed a marked improvement on last seasons efforts but "one swallow does not a summer make" and I think a more balanced view of this performance and its impact on this season might be more prudent.

Of course, you cannot solely judge a player on one performance but for me he was pretty damned good last night. The commentators agreed. But part of a back four, NOT centre in a back three. We may have, on paper at least, six centre backs, but you can rest assured that one or two will be injured or suspended at any given time. For me I want four at the back this season...

Nay lad - he did not get to play for his country because he has the odd good game. He must have had a few.

Give him some credit - he does more than breath I think you will find.

What about his performance against Russia, he looked solid and composed in that game too. He may not be the fastest but he showed good awareness last night and I particularly enjoyed the moment he nicked the ball off of Mueller, on the edge of the Algerian box, and then showboated around Oezil. How many Watford players have you seen do that with such composure?

Like the curate's egg - he's good in parts.
Problem last season was he was played on the right side of a back 3, he's left-footed, and had problems with pacy wingers or wing backs. Put him in the middle of the back 3 (or 4) - that's where he's done so well for Algeria.
Talking about Algeria, wasn't Hammeur Bouazza (spelling?!) Algerian? After he left us for Fulham what happened to him next/where is he now?
Then there was Al Bangura (I know he wasn't Algerian) - what happened to him too?!

Saying that I thought as a team Algeria were superb last night.

I thought his positioning for the first Germany goal was spot on and he should have cut out the cross. The second was a bit unlucky for him in that again he positioned himself correctly but failed to make good contact with the ball. He surprised me with his overall performance against top performers.
