Tommy Barnett died in Watford at the age of 78, en route to collecting his season ticket.

He had made 442 competitive appearances for Watford as an inside-forward, a club record that stood for nearly 40 years.

This figure would have been bettered but for the onset of World War Two which effectively ended Barnett's competitive career at the age of 30.

He also scored 163 goals for the club despite being essentially a creative player, a figure only bettered by Luther Blissett.

His ashes were scattered on the Vicarage Road pitch.
